Edie Falco’s lead comedy series actress Emmy for Showtime’s Nurse Jackie made Hollywood history. It marks the first time a television performer has won lead actor Emmy for consecutive regular series roles — Carmela Soprano on HBO’s The Sopranos and now for the title character of Showtime’s Nurse Jackie. She’s also only the third actor — and the first female performer — to win for both comedy and dramatic series roles. The other two: Carroll O’Connor and Robert Young. To say she was legitimately shocked to have won would be an understatement. Her backstage comments reiterated what she said in her acceptance: namely, that she isn’t funny and had no idea what she was doing accepting an Emmy. ”The whole comedy world is new terrain for me,” she said. “When I’d found out I was nominated for a comedy series, I laughed my head off. Then I pulled a dress on and came here. But the women I was up against are hysterically funny, talented comediennes…I’m not playing coy here, I’m just really dumbfounded by the events of this evening. Tina Fey? I mean for heaven’s sake, it’s ridiculous.” She added that she hasn’t yet been inside a hospital since she started playing her Nurse Jackie role, so it would be difficult to compare hers to a real life nurse. “I certainly have met nurses who had only good things to say,” Falco said. “Of course if they didn’t, they probably wouldn’t say anything.” — Ray Richmond is contributing to Deadline Hollywood’s Emmy coverage.

she is great! great in sayles’ sunshine state.
When are they going to stop allowing shows like “Desperate Housewives” and “Nurse Jackie” to compete in the COMEDY round? The show’s fantastic and she is too but the look on her face and her statement during the acceptance speech said it all.
It’s kind of unfair.
Sure, the show has definite funny moments, but it’s not a “Comedy”.
totally agree!
I think what happened (no disrespect intended to Ms. Falco) is that that was a great example of a “throw away” vote.
Meaning, voters ASSUME another contestant is going to get a lot of votes so they toss one in for someone they like thinking it won’t matter.
She’s GREAT on the show (as noted) but it isn’t a comedy by any means.
I almost bust a gut laughing so hard during that scene in season 2 when that drug-addled nurse set up a transfusion for the little girl, but using plasma of the wrong blood type. Watching her writhe about reminded me of little Jill Whelan in Airplane!
OK, I was kidding. And I know it was in poor taste. I actually know someone who’s dad was given the wrong blood type and it was both serious and tragic. (But the Airplane! bit was funny enough, in it’s day – and she survived.)
Seriously though, I was enjoying this series well enough until I recently (last night) learned it is a comedy. So now I think it sucks. Too bad. If it were categorized a tragedy/drama (a la Breaking Bad) I’d have a much more positive opinion.
Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are funny comedic actresses. Edie Falco might be able to do comedy well, but I haven’t seen it yet.
