Modern Family co-creator Steve Levitan looked like a single dad tonight, accepting alone the show’s awards for Best Comedy Series and Best Writing for a Comedy Series. Where was fellow co-creator Christopher Lloyd, the executive producer who co-wrote the pilot that won the writing award? ”He has an aversion to crowds and public speaking, but he supports the show and we will celebrate at the Governors Ball,” Levitan said backstage. UPDATE: Lloyd indeed was on the party circuit. I caught up with him at the Fox and FX’s shindig in Downtown. “I just don’t like going to awards shows,” he said in explaining why he’d skipped the ceremony. Levitan gave a shoutout to 30 Rock, which Modern Family dethroned this year. Noting that instead of female celebrities like Paris Hilton, “you need a role model make Tina (Fey). It’s still a damn funny show, and we feel lucky to be here.” There are no hard feelings between Levitan and Glee creator Ryan Murphy, either. “I saw Ryan afterwords, and we hugged,” Levitan said. “I really admire the fact that Glee has broken the mold. My daughter went to a Glee concert, and I think there is room for both shows.”
Asked why Modern Family has so clicked with audiences, Levitan said: “The show has embraced emotion. I think emotion in comedy has gone out of vogue, and maybe people were hungry for it a little bit. They wanted to laugh but they also wanted to feel something.”

Congratulations Modern Family, well deserved win! Yay!
Levitan’s horse bit with Lloyd was funny. The skit with Clooney also killed. I am happy Modern Family won.
Levitan seems like a classy guy. Going to offer his congrats to Murphy even after Murphy derided “Modern Family” a few weeks ago for not having “Cam” and “Mitchell” kiss on screen.
BTW: Murphy needs to enjoy all the success of “Glee” now, because if his past history is to be repeated, it will go from good to suck just like “Nip/Tuck”. “Nip/Tuck” was great season’s 1 and 2. Then it had a huge drop in quality from Season 2 to 3 (Before limping for a few more seasons to it’s death).
Best comedy on TV and they all seem very appreciative of their success. Humility in Hollywood??? May be a new trend…
I’ve worked with Levitan before, so I can assure you: that man has NO humility. What you saw, I think, when he kind of slumped his knees in that “Aw, shucks” position — and I don’t blame you for mistaking it as humility, as he’s very good at it — was Levitan letting us know that he’s much taller than the rest of us Jews who do the same thing he does for a living, and that “That’s Hollywood, dudes” wasn’t intended to be ironic at all. That’s how this guy really thinks. He might as well have gotten up there and said, “The key to my success is that I look and think just like an executive, which makes them trust me. So suck on that, shorties!”
You want emotion? Bring back The Fall Guy.
No, Steve, no! We don’t love Modern Family because it ‘embraces emotion.’ We love it because it’s brilliantly conceived, brilliantly acted, smart, fresh, and (oh, yeah) funny.
