Tom Hanks was beaming backstage after having picked up the Emmy for Outstanding Miniseries for his work producing the HBO 10-parter The Pacific, the $200 million-plus project that was the most expensive in TV history. Hanks, who with Playtone partner Gary Goetzman exec produced the mini with Steven Spielberg, began by expressing mock outrage that The Amazing Race didn’t win for top reality competition series. “What?” he screamed. “You’re kidding!” He then expressed his wish that more miniseries had been nominated, beyond The Pacific and the Masterpiece Theatre project Return to Cranford. “There are a lot of themes and stories for which miniseries is the perfect medium for them to be told,” Hanks said. “We are all storytellers, and this was a terrific story to be able to tell over the eight years it took to get it done. That’s the great thing about HBO. It isn’t standard television at all. They let us say and do what we wanted. There are no act breaks for commercials and no specific time frame. They give you absolute and total freedom to tell your story and explore your theme in the best way possible. If you have millions to spend, you’d sure as hell better come through or you’re in big trouble.” – Ray Richmond is contributing to Deadline Hollywood’s Emmy coverage.

Tom Hanks, one of the truly unsung talent based producers. He gets a lot of shit done and done well, but he’s not as flashy as some others. Still love THAT THING YOU DO. Eager to see his next one even if Julia Roberts is in it.
Eight years?!? Seriously?!?
I’m sorry. “Band Of Brothers”, for me, remains the pinnacle of television. It portrayed a group of characters we cared about, even if we didn’t wholly like them, within a varied and interesting war milieu.
“Pacific” had loathsome characters who — with exception of the wonderful Joseph Mazzello — we could have cared less if they’d all died, within a tedious and repetitive setting, with crushingly banal dialogue. The one outstanding show — depicting their downtime in Australia — was so good, it showed us just how bad the rest of the show was.
Hanks’ quote above says it all: “If you have millions to spend, you’d sure as hell better come through or you’re in big trouble.”
Sorry, Tom. You spent it. It wasn’t that special. How you won this award for something so substandard, is utterly beyond me.
Have to agree that Pacific was nowhere near what Band was. Band was truly great. Tried numerous times couldn’t get through the Pacific.
episodes 8 and 10 were great. mostly thanks to the amazing work done by annie parisse. i was shocked she didn’t get the sole acting nomination.
Tom Hanks is one of the classiest guys in the business. He lives where he speaks. His commitment to documenting the greatest generation is unquestionably genuine and heartfelt. Not only SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, BAND OF BROTHERS, THE PACIFIC but also his pitch-perfect narration for Ken Burns’ THE WAR. The guy is not just a mensch, he’s a gifted, talented mensch
Two words
Bruce McKenna
Bruce McKenna is a talent to watch. I’v worked with him (and his wonderful wife) is several stage productions.
GO BRUCE GO!!
Pacific was so much better than BOB. Congrats Tom!
