After winning 7 consecutive times since they made the Reality Competition Program Emmy eligible, The Amazing Race finally lost. Top Chef‘s win was such a huge upset that the shock was etched allĀ over producer Dan Cutforth’s face when he gave the acceptance speech. His partner, Jane Lipsitz, thought so little of the show’s chances that she didn’t come–Magical Elves has signed on to be producers of the Jon Chu-directed film about Justin Bieber for Paramount, which is underway. But a significantly bigger diss than Amazing Race finishing out of the money was American Idol‘s 8th consecutive defeat. It was presumed that if Amazing Race lost, it would be Idol that took its crown. Not so much. A cooking show suddenly presides atop the Emmy reality universe. Backstage, producers Gail Simmons and Padma Lakshmi echoed Cutforth’s surprise. “We thought Amazing Race would win again,” Lakshmi admitted. “But we ran into the Amazing Race producer on the red carpet on the way in and I bumped into him and told him, ‘We’re taking you down!’ I was just kidding. But then it happened.” — Ray Richmond is contributing to Deadline Hollywood’s Emmy coverage.

SO WELL DESERVED!! Congrats Magical Elves & Bravo!
I love The Amazing Race, but they sucked this year. Enough with all the gay and or size 2 blonde contestants. It’s getting old. Can we get some minorities that have at least half a chance at winning?
“American Idol” and “Dancing with the Stars” really should submit in the variety series category because the episodes they tend to be judged on are finales — high on variety and high on emotion but low on competition.
And “Idol” should never win off the season they just had when Seasons 7 with the Dueling Davids and Season 8 with Adam Lambert were far superior.
Emmys for a “reality” show? Why? This is acceptable? What is wrong with you people?
The Emmys have lost any sort of validity for excellence. And how did I miss that this is simply a popularity contest? This year I stopped watching.
at the risk of dignifying this…
reality shows are on tv, making them tv shows. emmy awards are given to tv shows…now what, pray tell, is the academy missing? or any of us, for that matter…
perhaps you should explain why it isn’t acceptable…
I don’t cook (much) and I never eat in fancy restaurants because of my poor social skills, small income, and inability to get a date (so I guess I’m not really a foodie,) but I absolutely love Top Chef. Congratulations!
I was curious what episodes were submitted. I’ve judged the category a couple of times and always think it is mistake when the shows submit the finales – even Chef and Runway. Those episodes are usually very bloated. (And not always representative of the series as a whole, but that is what you have to vote on.) Race is always good looking, and they choose moving and interesting episodes driven by the contestants not the event.
I’m betting Chef didn’t submit the finale this year.
It was the Joel Robuchon episode that was submitted for Chef.
