EXCLUSIVE: Jenny Ash, the UK director who has been nominated for an Emmy for America – The Story of Us, is developing a biopic of reggae legend Bob Marley. Ash’s feature will concentrate on the year Marley spent living in London in 1977. This was a crucial year for Marley. He’d fled Jamaica after an attempt was made on his life; the year ended with him sustaining a soccer injury which eventually triggered full-blown cancer. It was the year of punk rock; in London Marley hung out with the Sex Pistols. It was also the year of his legendary Rainbow Theatre gig. Crucially, he also started an affair with Jamaican beauty queen Cindy Breakspeare, who had just been crowned Miss World. Ash tells me she sees the biopic as a love triangle between Marley, his wife Rita and Breakspeare, whom Ash has spent time with in Jamaica. “There’s never been a fiction film about Marley,” Ash tells me. “We’ve never had a sense of him as a real man, as opposed to the legend.”
Greenacre Films – Nadine Marsh Edwards (Bhaji On the Beach) and Amanda Jenks (An Englishman in New York) — is the production company. Ash is repped by Tally Garner at Curtis Brown.
One bump in the road ahead is that the filmmakers don’t have rights to the songs yet. Given Rita Marley’s antipathy to Cindy Breakspeare, that’s a big if. Other planned biopics of Janis Joplin and Marvin Gaye have foundered because of rights issues. Rita Marley herself was executive producer on a planned Weinstein Company biopic based on her 2004 autobiography No Woman No Cry: My Life With Bob Marley. Lauryn Hill, who is Rita Marley’s daughter in law, was eyed to play Rita. Hill was going to play Rita in a previous Warner Bros biopic, based on Timothy White’s 1991 biography of Marley, Catch a Fire. That project fell through after director Ron Shelton, and his replacement George Armitage, both left the project.
President Obama introduced Ash’s two-hour section of the History Channel’s 12-part series America – The Story of Us, which dealt with slavery and the Civil War. Jane Root, former controller of BBC2, produced through her London-based Nutopia.
For the life of me, I can’t think who could possibly play Marley. The only name I can come up with Ashley Walters, the British actor who was in Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ with 50 Cent.

How does one year of a person’s life equate a “Biopic?” Love triangle? Is that what it REALLY was? Scorsese and others have been trying to tell Bob’s story but dealing with his “estate” proved to be a major headache. The story behind the attempt on Marley’s life by the Jamaican Shower Posse and its geopolitical implications along with the subsequent fallout is far more compelling a tale. It’s unfortunate when people are so alien to a subject matter or culture they seek to exploit that they must dumb it down to levels where it becomes meaningless.
Amin Joseph the African pirate from the Expendables would be my pick.
Interestingly, Ashley Walters would be a good choice to play Marley.
If not, british reggae singer NATTY would be a great choice, if he can act.
Ashley Walters doesn’t look biracial. Part of Marley’s struggle in life was being biracial.
It’s a no brainer who should portray Marley….Zac Efron. The guy can sing and act. Perfect!
They are planting a boiled potato. This will never happen.
His son, Kymani Marley, actor and rapper, would do an excellent job playing Bob Marley. But Rita Marley would never let that happen as he’s the black sheep of the family.
“Jenny Ash, the UK director who has been nominated for an Emmy for America – The Story of Us”
How is it the story of Us if she was from the UK?
It’s an intriguing story but this “year-in-the-life approach” really does not constitute a biopic. It’s more like that Epstein/Lennon film, or Backbeat. It’s actually a little offensive to even label this a biopic. Additionally, without music rights this will be akin to the Showtime Hendrix flick. (sample scene: “Right now I’m gonna play a little something called Foxy Lady.” The crowd SCREAMS. Jimi’s fingers settle on frets. SMASH CUT TO Jimi doing the dishes.)
Much of what is above is factually incorrect. The Rita Marley project did not fall apart. Also, Bob Marley’s affair with Cindy Breakspeare began well before that year in London – it started at 56 Hope Road. In fact, he helped train Cindy for the beauty contest. If you read Rita’s book, you will see that Cindy and Rita made their peace when Bob was dying. And there was no “love triangle” during that particular year. Rita was in JA taking care of the kids when Bob was in exile. When she came to sing with the I-Three, maybe there was some tension.
There are many wannabe-Marley projects but planning and doing are two different things!
No way they’re going to get the rights to the music!!!!
Come on, you all know who IS Bob Marley……… the mind blowing thespian that is Jaimie Foxx!
I heard that the Rita Marley project is still on track and that they will find someone – not a Hollywood star – to play Bob who embodies the spirit of the man and can SING. The road is littered with projects that did not reach the finish line. (The documentary, for example, Lauryn Hill’s film, an Esther Anderson project.) If this director has not already worked out a deal with the Marley estate, it’s doubtful she’ll get the rights. I agree with the folks above. Is this news? If you announce something, does it make it happen? I don’t think so!
Biopic? Using just one year? And why pit woman against woman? Does that define the man?
No Movie No Cry…
Anthony Mackie could do it
I saw Bob perform four times in Los Angeles, including his break-out gig at The Roxy in 1975 following the release of “Natty Dread”. There is no human being — including any of his sons — who could possibly portray what can only be called by anyone who witnessed his stage magic a force of nature. Bob was unlike any singer/composer/band-leader we have ever witnessed on this earth. He was not only the leader of a people (a rainbow tribe), but like they said about Abraham Lincoln when he died : “Now he belongs to the ages.” No actor could ever step on a make-believe stage and convince anyone that he is Bob Marley. There is not that much suspension of disbelief in the universe to accomplish that feat. Filmmakers, leave Bob alone! The great shame is that Martin Scorcese’s documentary did not get made. Hopefully, some great documentarian will pull all the great footage of Bob and put together a great film that will reflect the greatness of one of the greatest artists ever to take the stage. Of all the great musicians who came out of the great renaissance of the 60′s and 70′s there is one man who is known now across the globe in every corner of every modern urban and backwater third world country and that is Bob Marley. He stands for freedom, love, joy and people of every kind working together to make the earth the holy place it should be.
I would just love to see someone do a good film on him. Something like a Walk the Line. I adore Bob and think he has an amazing story to tell!
EDI GATHEGI would be the perfect choice! I’ve been watching his work and he’s EXTREMELY gifted. This could be a gem!
What about the guy that got killed in the second Twilight movie? He would make a great Bob Marley. I think he was on House too.
EDI GATHEGI would be the perfect choice! I’ve been watching his work and he’s EXTREMELY gifted. This could be a gem!
I have it on good authority that a wonderful young actor by the name of Edi Gathegi will be the guy. Hope this is true. He has range going from a detective in Life on Mars, a doctor on House, and a crime boss in Gone Baby Gone.

He has the talent and gift to transform into his character and be … Is truly a gift ! In which lots of actors are not able to do! look at his work and the way he just gets into his character is very impressive to watch .. This role requires an artist from the soul not just someone that can act bob marley is a legend , an artist , in which it requires just that to be able to pull his role !
