Ray Richmond is contributing to Deadline’s 2010 Emmy coverage. Here’s his scorecard assessing the Outstanding Lead Drama Series Actor race:
BRYAN CRANSTON, BREAKING BAD
Why He Got Nominated: He’s won two years running, and the TV Academy isn’t in the habit of failing to nominate guys who won the year before (except in rare instances). Plus, if anything, Cranston just enjoyed his best season onscreen.
Why He Has To Win: The episode Cranston submitted to voters, “Full Measure”, was the season-ending cliffhanger that shows his character continuing a mindbending personality transformation. Voters like it that kind of risk, particularly when the judges are teams of acting contemporaries. Believes one of those voters: “This man isn’t merely acting. He’s creating art.” Also his performance is fresh in voters minds, since the show’s season finished in June.
Why He Can’t Possibly Win: The AMC show’s ratings are still comparatively miniscule, which could hurt Cranston’s bid to three-peat. There’s also tough competition from Jon Hamm and Michael C. Hall for their own breakthrough seasons.
JON HAMM, MAD MEN
Why He Got Nominated: No one in the Industry can overlook AMC’s Mad Men or Jon Hamm come Emmy-time. Plus, the actor has shown his range with guest appearances on 30 Rock and SNL. Now more than ever, the TV Academy knows he’s the real deal.
Why He Has To Win: After two earlier years as the heavy favorite, he’s not this year. That means a win would be unexpected, which is the TV Academy’s way of showing he was overdue. Plus, Hamm’s submitted episode “The Gypsy and the Hobo” is a whopper of an acting showcase. He also happens to be exceedingly well-liked on set and in the acting community because he hasn’t let the fame and praise go to his head.
Why He Can’t Possibly Win: It’s possible that the TV community’s fixation on the show’s behind-the-scenes dramas starring Matthew Weiner doesn’t extend to the actors. Or why else would none of the thesps have won in Mad Men‘s first 2 years of eligibility despite multiple nominations? As for Hamm, surely the Academy isn’t naive enough to think that just because he makes playing Don Draper look easy, it is.
MICHAEL C. HALL, DEXTER
Why He Got Nominated: This is Hall’s 3rd consecutive nomination for Showtime’s Dexter, and his 4th overall (earning one for Six Feet Under). He’s recognized for consistently taking his game to a new level in this show.
Why He Has To Win: He’s submitted the edgy but wrenching season-ender “The Getaway” for consideration, which may be his best work to date. But there’s also buzz that it’s time to reward Hall. It’s ridiculous that Hall has never has won, a fact the TV Academy may want to rectify since he snagged the SAG Award on his fourth nomination. This is hardly a sure thing, of course: the voters revel in upsets. But if ever Hall were going to win, this would be the year.
Why He Can’t Possibly Win: There’s an “out of sight, out of mind” aspect to Emmys, and Dexter ended its season way back in December. Too, as one producer puts it, “There are some voters who are never going to vote for a guy who plays a serial killer.”
HUGH LAURIE, HOUSE
Why He Got Nominated: Laurie always gets nominated. That he never wins doesn’t discount the fact he deserves to be noticed at Emmy-time. It’s his 6th nomination for Fox/Universal Media Studio’s House – 5 for acting, and one for producing. Voters appreciate his consistently fine performance in a challenging role.
Why He Has To Win: It’s giving it to Laurie for his body of work at this point. Laurie did manage to earn SAG Awards in 2007 and 2009. But that doesn’t necessarily score points with Emmy judges. This might: his submitted episode is the 2-hour Broken that puts him in a psychiatric hospital going through Vicodin detox. If voters are inspired, it could tip the scales in his direction.
Why He Can’t Possibly Win: History. Rarely does an actor who is a previous 4-time Emmy loser win on the 5th attempt.
MATTHEW FOX, LOST
Why He Got Nominated: He was probably due after predictions he would be nominated after Lost‘s previous seasons. The fact it was the final season following an ABC publicity blitz no doubt made the difference.
Why He Has To Win: The Lost finale grew into a national phenomenon, and that’s going to be key to his Emmy chances given that he submitted that episode (“The End”) to voters who were able to watch it live, which cemented perceptions. Also, it received healthy ratings. He now has a body of work if Party Of 5 is included. Also bolstering his chances is that he’s an affable guy, and his fellow acting types after all are judging him.
Why He Can’t Possibly Win: He’s not yet at the same level as Cranston, Hamm, or Hall. And the buzz accompanying his work this past season isn’t exactly deafening. It may take a 3rd series to win him the Emmy.
KYLE CHANDLER, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
Why He Got Nominated: This is as pure a nomination as there is at the Emmys this year, after Chandler emerged from the pack in a show everyone has long raved about but now mostly ignored on DirecTV. Chandler’s acting, not reputation or quid pro quo, made this happen.
Why He Has To Win: Chandler gave an indelible performance in his submitted episode “East of Dillon”. The TV Academy sometimes decides seemingly en masse to make an upset happen for all the right reasons, and this would be that. “If this guy’s show didn’t air on DirecTV,” believes one producer, “he’d be a shoo-in.”
Why He Can’t Possibly Win: His show airs on DirecTV.

Re: FNL’s Britton and Chandler…. that FNL appears on DirectTV and NBC is even a passable excuse not to reward these actors for their achievements makes the Emmy all the more irrelevant. It’s not the outlet, it’s the work. And their indivdiual work is extraordinary.
Hamm to win. Simply breath taking performance from that actor.
I`ll be seriously upset if Fox wins. He is by far the weakest link among the nominees, there are better actors who didn`t make the cut, and Lost Finale Season was Terry O`Quin show. I`m shocked that Fox registered with voters at all especially since O`Quinn first and foremost, and then Emerson and Cusick were the season`s standouts. Fox is riding the finale`s tearjerker coattails but oiverall, he shouldn`t have been nominated. Better actors were robbed.
Seriously? Fox was long overdue for a nomination. All of these men are outstanding actors, but since this is his final year, I hope the statue goes to Fox.
What a category… I don’t envy the decision facing Emmy voters. There’s not a weak link in the bunch. As much as I would love to see Kyle Chandler upset the group (in true Coach Taylor style) Cranston outdid himself this season.
3-peat for Cranston! He HAS to win. Nobody else on this list even comes close. Since he won for the first 2 seasons of BB, and the 3rd season was undeniably his best, he absolutely must win. It is a no-brainer.
“The AMC show’s ratings are still comparatively miniscule, which could hurt Cranston’s bid to three-peat.”
This seems like an irrelevant and/or ridiculous reason for ‘Why He Can’t Possibly Win.’ Ratings do not have anything to do with judging the quality of an actors performance. Im thinking/hoping that you (The Deadline Team) just said that because you know Cranston deserves to win, and you put the one-and-only negative thing about the show there because you could not think of any other reason why he shouldn’t take the award home.
Ratings were clearly not an issue for judges to give him the award for the first 2 seasons of BB, and they were higher than ever in the 3rd season, sooo… Another example of a show that has won Emmy’s with low ratings is 30 Rock. They won tons of awards before most (non-industry) people even knew the show existed. The Emmy’s are actually what put 30 Rock on the map.
Again, BRYAN CRANSTON MUST WIN THIS AWARD!!! Walter White is hands down the most real and interesting character on TV in the last 10 years (at least), and this is only true because of Cranston’s amazing ability bring him to life with more depth, passion, and intensity than any actor I have witnessed, period. A 3-peat would be a perfectly fitting way to honor the best actor on television.
KYLE CHANDLER – He (+Connie Britton) have truly built up their characters over the seasons. Feel like real people/real place/real relationship. Made crossover to “East Dillon” work – who can do that? Feels like W. Texas. Dramatic success.
Best Looking…Best Actor…Kyle Chandler! He would have our votes.
He deserves to win.
I’ll be thrilled if Matthew Fox wins but truthfully he has had several very good EMMY worthy episodes in several of Lost’s seasons. He deserves it.
“Fox is riding the finale`s tearjerker coattails but oiverall, he shouldn`t have been nominated. Better actors were robbed.”
Yeah… Better actors on OTHER shows… That final season of “Lost” was just underwhelming, and the finale… Thank God I have been able to let go of my disappointment so soon after…
I really enjoyed all of these performances, but Michael C. Hall should win this year for his portrayal of Dexter. Cranston as Mr. Whiiiite (as his co-star often calls him) would be a close second, but he’s already been recognized for his amazing work in the first two seasons. John Hamm is fantastic as Don Draper, but he may need to wait one more year. We’ll see what the voters have decided in about 10 days.
(Next year, Buscemi in Boardwalk Empire and Hoffman in Lucky will make the Emmys seem like the Oscars.)
Strong field but Fox & Chandler are not in the same league. Fully developed characters with the kind of strength of Cranston, Hall, and Hammer are powerhouses. I’d love to see Cranston take it again.
Not sure why Addison has such a disdain for Fox. His work was beautiful in the finale. The other actors she mentioned are all previous winners/nominees so I’m not clear on whose nomination he took or why that’s even relevant in this case. The entire Lost series hinged on Fox’s performance in the finale in many ways. The fact that he pulled it off is a testament to the show and the understated work he has done on it for years.
Cranston. The best actor on television today. No one even compares. If he gets robbed, Michael C. Hall or Jon Hamm better be the thief. I love Fox, and thought this season of Lost was certainly his best, but he is just not in the same league as many of the top nominees. Better than Chandler, but absolutely nowhere near Cranston.
“Also bolstering his chances is that he’s an affable guy, and his fellow acting types after all are judging him.”
Fox’s press indicates he is less than ‘an affable guy’. He apparently didn’t get along with most of the cast, has a drinking problem, cheats on his wife and behaves as quite a diva. Not too many actors get the kind of shout out he did in Knocked Up. Not sure ‘his fellow acting types’ are going to hand him an Emmy because he’s a nice guy or for waxing his chest for three seasons. He’s out classed by every other nominee and most of the other actors Lost.
MATTHEW FOX!!! He deserves it; his performance this season was the best he’s done. I’ll be sorely disappointed if he doesn’t take it….
To ‘Allison’
Wow! Personal attack much ???? Very unclassy post about Matthew Fox… You totally sound like that insane woman who created the Lost ‘fishbiscuitland’ site only to bash him and his fans, and of course hated the Jack oriented finale…
All your ‘arguments’ are based on that hate site and/or well-known tabloidish sites, and the ‘Knocked Up’ thing is just ridiculous (consider the source in the movie, aka the loveable loser, and what the director himself said in many interviews: that he thought it was just funny to have a loser attacking an actor ‘so handsome and successful’…) As for the Lost cast not liking him, just ask the adorable Jorge Garcia, Evangeline Lilly or Ian Somerhalder, they couldn’t be more appreciative of the guy
You are judging an actor’s (supposed)life in order to prove he’s not worthy of an Emmy??? Ooooookay.
All the actors nominated in the category are wonderful, and could’nt be more different to one another! So, how to chose?
IMO, Matthew Fox should have been nominated years ago for the season 3 finale… He did a TREMENDOUS work this year and in the finale he outdid himself. The last ten minutes of the series are hugely controversial, but on all the Lost sites, Jack’s death and MF’s interpretation are universally judged as incredibly beautiful, heart-breaking and iconic.
Bryan Cranston has already won twice, and neither Jon Hamm nor Michael C. Hall has ever won. Cranston does amazing work, and has been rightfully rewarded for it. Both Hall and Hamm have been doing consistently amazing work as well, so I’d vote for Hall this year, and hope Hamm wins it next year.
Matthew Fox deserves this Emmy bar none. I don’t think it is easy to play the mythical hero, fall from grace and redem himself played as the guy next door filled with self doubt. He played this role perfectly and “the end” hinges on him to complete this mythical journal as a human. The other actors do not show the emotional range that Fox does. It really bothers me that people who do not know how to act comment about his work. Name another actor who has pulled this off.
Bryan Cranston is riveting in Breaking Bad. That show is amazing.
It makes me cringe and look away, yet I have to keep watching it.
I love the twists and turns and plot developments that creep up on you. There is no other show like this one.
Hugh Laurie is the best drama actor! God help him to win Emmy 2010!!
