BREAKING:: So Paramount Pictures won’t be screen-testing any young actors to star opposite Tom Cruise after all. I’ve learned that the studio has just chosen Jeremy Renner to infuse new blood in its Mission: Impossible franchise. Renner is the Oscar-nominated star of The Hurt Locker and will star alongside Cruise in the fourth installment of the franchise that will begin production in the fall as a reboot. Brad Bird is directing and Cruise is producing with JJ Abrams.
Paramount has struggled to find the right co-star to play the operative opposite Cruise. One factor was selecting an actor who could potentially carry the series on his own down the line, should Cruise’s Ethan Hunt character not continue to be the emphasis. While Cruise is expected to return for a fifth installment, production chief Adam Goodman wanted a guy who could grow into a leading man in his own right. The studio boss was interested in actors like Tom Hardy and Chris Pine, but they were booked. So the studio planned to test a group of young actors later this week, and Deadline spent all Tuesday going back and forth with the studio over candidates Kevin Zegers, Christopher Egan and Anthony Mackie (the latter of whom starred with Renner in The Hurt Locker). But it was clear that Paramount wasn’t sure what it was going to do. Those tests have been canceled now (Mackie, another seasoned actor poised for a breakout, ultimately pulled himself out of the running and didn’t sign a test deal.) Goodman, sources said, felt Renner’s “has a Daniel Craig quality” and the heft to carry the franchise. Interesting that, rather than trying to create a star by going with a young unknown, Paramount instead has placed its bet on a 39-year old actor who has been around for years.
This casting fills a big piece in the Mission: Impossible 4 puzzle, which has included coming to resolution on a budget. The script by Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec came in just as Cruise’s Knight and Day opened to lackluster U.S. box office which caused Paramount to rethink M:I4 budget. Cruise’s deal has now been completed, though his perks package is still being worked out. The film will shoot in the U.S., Vancouver, Prague and Dubai.
Renner only truly reached the A-list with The Hurt Locker even though his earlier work is memorable, but he has the grit, maturity, and chops to take this next big step. It is the second major role for Renner coming out of his turn as the reckless explosives specialist. Renner also will star in Marvel Studios’ The Avengers, playing the role of Hawkeye in that star-studded superhero ensemble that will be directed by Joss Whedon. Paramount is expected to release that film under its distribution deal with Marvel Studios, made before the company was acquired by Disney. Renner will next be seen in the Ben Affleck-directed The Town, the GK Films-produced drama that Warner Bros opens September 17.

Yay!
Renner is a great actor. Gives the film’s tone & cast some needed heft.
I know a lot of people hate this franchise, but I like it. The last couple have sucked though. Introducing Renner is genius and I can’t wait to see these two very intense actors go toe to toe. And while there are a lot of things I hated in the last two installments (Felicity? Really?), you can’t deny watching Hoffman as a really bad dude was mesmerizing.
Too bad about Anthony Mackie though. He and Renner are so good together. Maybe they can still fit him into the film in some (worthy) capacity. You know he and Renner can even take over after Ethan is gone.
Even though Im not for PRE-quels..In think the only way to appraoch another “MI” film would be to start fresh with fresh young real talent. They are out there just need to be known by the public by and large. They could be led by a “familiar” like Renner. I would kinda let em do it liek StarTrek and have them go through the trials and tribulations of growing into their positions through training and other “life altering” stuff that may even lead to the reasons why they ended up in the agency (IMF??) It could actually pave the way for interesting back stories and make it a good team-oriented, character-driven film!
there is not one person on this planet who truly “wants” another MI. Just people who would shrug and say, “yeah, I guess I’ll see it”.
Yet another example of a studio run by out-of-touch geezers who have no edge and whose taste level in movies is oddly stuck in 1994.
Renner is great. Great choice. Pitt would’ve been even better. As would have Jolie or “Kick Ass” Kate Beckinsale. good luck.
The same teen fanboys that made Scott Pilgrim a hit, ehhh?
The DVD sales/rentals reflect that actually many people have caught up to the best Picture of 2009 in The Hurt Locker, and I’ve been looking forward to seeing Renner continue in some good roles. He’s supposed to be good in The Town, I’m happy for him getting Hawkeye, and I think he’ll push Cruise the way PS Hoffman does when they share scenes (MI3 & Magnolia). Love it. Renner certainly seems a better choice that than guy who played Eragon’s cousin.
Well, he is a good choice even though I don’t really want him to be spoiled for a Hollywood movie, I dearly wish he will go back to good character movies and doesn’t remain an action star in fact he really gives a story to every individual role he played. Look at Doyle, one of my favorite role, anyone else would have played him like a plain soldier, Renner gave him a human touch and a deeper story you just wanted to find out.
Same as Gamble, he saved the bad, very bad movie SWAT with his appearance.
And he is very charismatic, funny, down to earth guy who definitely deserves good roles, attention and respect. Rock on, you are awesome.
*winks*
And Tom Cruise is…no comment.
So, how much will Joel Lubin get in bookings for this project, given that he’s point on Renner and is also on the TC team? Good job packaging there.
spot on. thats all there is to it.
This franchise is so beneath him. I guess its just a paycheck gig. Ahh well.
Can Renner do schlock? I understand the desire to get paid, but getting mixed up with pretty boy stars and crappy scripts in a franchise that jumped the shark ten years ago…
Thanks goodness they didn’t go with the tween pinups Zegers and Egan. Agents, managers – give it up already and stop trying to put your dreamboat clients that only have female fans in male audience driven action thrillers. Tom Hardy, Renner, etc – they work in this arena. But im so tired of of the usual tween brat pack names as being “up” for roles in these movies Ike the new denzel/ryan reynolds movie, captain America, etc. Try as you might reps, it AINT gonna happen – and if it does, by some stroke of stupidity, no dudes are gonna pay $15 to see some boy band looking fool mow down the bad guys.
Renner did an excellent job as the bad guy in the film “SWAT” with Jackson and Colin Farrell. As a matter of fact he was one of the best things about the film. So it isn’t new for him to be in an action flick with big co-stars.
Discovered Renner in The Hurt Locker and he totally blew me away. Have since sought out a lot of his earlier work and am a devoted fan. He is an inspired choice. I have never seen an M:I movie but will be there on opening night for this one!
PS: Plenty of folks in fly over areas have seen Hurt Locker!
I just hate to see Renner piddle away his talent on the brain-dead MI franchise. Get him involved in a Bourne movie or something original that has some brains to accompany its brawn and he’d do especially well.
Surprising, but a very good decision. Despite a number of comments here, Renner is a known quantity and a very strong actor. He’s not “that guy” anymore. He will stand up well to Cruise – in fact, (and why I say “surprising”) expect Renner to outshine Cruise in this film. Would have thought Cruise would not support the hiring of an actor with Renner’s abilities.
My bias is clear so I will just recap what I said in your LAST Mi:4 article and leave you nice people alone.
A week ago, I was a happy camper cause, according to admittedly not very reliable IMDb, it was looking very much like Cruise and Abrams were bringing their bright engaging young MI:3 team…back.
The WHOLE cache of the TV series was the TEAM whose skills and natures we came to know well. Abrams, a TV guy, seemed to pick up on that and was laying down firm foundations…last time. With old hand Ving Rhames back and new team members Maggie Q and Jonny Rhys Meyers both MORE than capable in small but fetching roles (rumored) to be returning, add surly boss Larry Fishburne and amusing geek Simon Pegg in the home office plus Michelle Monaghan as Ethan’s surprisingly intrepid bride…
Some of us thought…hey, we have a workable sequel here!
Now, trust me, loyal MI:3 fans are…pissed…about The Hurt Locker guy ‘coptering in.
Beyond any other member of the MI:3 cast, Declan had real potential for development, being as he was played by one of hollywood’s most stunning shape shifters. With his globe for Elvis and daunting star turn as Henry8 in The Tudors now laid to rest, fans know there is virtually no identity that Jonathan Rhys Meyers cannot assume…which COULD have taken the franchise in a compelling U turn AWAY from blowing (expensive) things up and back to it’s complex (economical) plot driven series roots.
Jonathan brings his OWN bloodlusting Tudors fans to the Mission, is more popular in Europe and he and Maggie Q are HUGE assets in the Asian market where I hear Tom also thrives.
At 33, Jonny is young enough to step up as Tom backs out, he’s earned his rep as a bad ass boy, he’s between roles, hungry, still surprisingly unknown, but, having helmed several miniseries, easily has the seasoned chops pull off an action franchise. He scorches celluloid but played well with Tom in MI:3 and trotted quietly in team beside Travolta in From Paris with Love.
In short, Jonny’s Declan was so…possible…as the spy in waiting.
For MI:4 to be casting about for a hot new…star…is a slap in the face of the considerable star they HAD. And, coming off the Tudors, Jonathan is too BIG a star in his own right to play backfield in The Team to Renner’s COstar billing with Tom. So. I take it, Jonny won’t be in the sequel.
It was Rhys Meyers who brought many of us to MI:3. I’m not alone when I say there is NO WAY I will even see MI:4 now, no more TWICE, nor will I rent it then buy the DVD with the extra special features disc. Which I gladly DID last time cause when I LIKE an actor, I put my money where my comments are.
(See foot, Tom, now, shoot at it. )
JRM’s management makes a good case!
Renner is a fantastic actor but to me not a great leading man
He will support more bankable marquee names like Cruise, or even Colin Ferrel
but I don’t think he will be the right one to carry a franchise. He will make a
very good villain though. Just like Kevin Spacey, Jeff Bridges, Philip Seymour
Hoffman
It’s comical to see people who claim that this is a ‘bad move’ when guys who make MILLIONS and MILLIONS of dollars and who actually know what they are doing think otherwise.
Hey, I’ve got an idea. For all your keyboard jockeys bashing this move, why don’t you get off your collective asses, go get a job, move up and run a studio, then you can decide who goes in what movie. Until then, kindly STFU and move on, ok?
People hated on Daniel Craig too – he turned out to be the best Bond ever.
I can imagine Renner adding anything to the serries, bu god luck anyways
