EXCLUSIVE: Fox, Fremantle,
and 19 Entertainment are locking in their American Idol judges with each passing day. But I’ve learned that the show really wanted but didn’t snag the best judge possible — David Geffen. My sources say that, about 4 months ago, Idol producer Simon Fuller of 19 Entertainment first approached the one time founder of both Asylum Records (Jackson Browne, The Eagles, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Linda Ronstadt) and Geffen Records (Donna Summer, John Lennon, Elton John, Cher, Aerosmith, Peter Gabriel, Guns N’ Roses, Lifehouse, Nirvana) and former principal of DreamWorks SKG. The two men met twice, and Fuller tried his best to talk Geffen into taking the judging gig left vacant by Simon Cowell. I hear the multibillionaire who rarely gives interviews or appears on television asked Fuller perplexed: “Why should I do this?”
As soon as Cowell announced his departure from Idol to bring his own music show The X Factor to Fox, the network and 19 and Fremantle sought a new judge who was a music mogul, like Tommy Mottola, Guy Oseary, and Jimmy Iovine. But Geffen would have trumped them all. “It would have been his if he’d wanted it,” a source tells me. “Because Cowell is a bad imitation of David.”
I couldn’t agree more: Geffen would have been a natural: he’s often brutally honest, he is a legendary talent spotter, and he’s forgotten more about the music biz than Cowell will ever know in a lifetime. I would have loved to get a comment about this close encounter with Idol from David himself (and learn what he thinks of that Viscount Of Vapidity, Ryan Seacrest, or even Cowell…), but Geffen is on his yacht in Greece and unavailable.
JENNIFER LOPEZ IS NEW ‘IDOL’ JUDGE! Closed Deal This Week
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Yeah that’s too bad about Geffen. But he can still consider mentoring…
Perez Hilton still should be considered. He’s funny and says it like it is!
Would be awesome!
I, and many other people, think Ray Connick,Jr. or Bret Michaels would be the best choices..PLEASE, NO JLO
“Geffen is on his yacht in Greece and unavailable.” I think you answered your own question.
Why all the spin regarding Ellen Degenerate. She’s a no talent fag (sorry, not homophobic, just don’t like fags)that got extremely lucky, my popular opinion. I truly believe the real reason she’s not returning to Idol is because Idol’s ratings dropped dramatically when they announced she was going to be a judge. They lost a ton of viewers when they made that blunder.
Wow — he would have been PERFECT to lend American Idol some legitimacy!
Aw, too bad! I would have LOVED David Geffen as a judge. C’mon Mr. G….if you’re reading this out on your little boat, give it a second thought. We’ve never gotten to see much of you. It would be fascinating for us, fun for you. Why not?
I wonder why Rupert Murdoch has such a desire to ram homosexuality down the throats of the American public? What is he up to… Time to dump Fox in all repsects.
Lifehouse?
Bummer, David Gergen would have been perfect.
Wait, who?
Geffen might know more about the industry and its artists but for the yokels who watch the show, the faux-authority of Cowell probably plays better. More to the point is Geffen’s question, Why do it?
Howard Stern should take Simon’s slot. The ratings would jump, that’s for sure.
If Howard Stern were to take Simon’s place on Idol, I would most likely stop watching. I just can’t stand the man.
the facebook oracle says he’s currently off to st tropez. being a billionaire, and jetting off to such fabulous locations at the drop of the hat, sounds like a hell of lot more fun to me than taking a chair on AI
So true, Geffen would have been spectacular. But he has much more to lose than gain….
How about Rick Rubin? Nah. All the great ones have better things to do.
ANYONE but Steve Tyler. Though it might be nice to have an excuse not to watch this tired show.
Good Decision Mr. Geffen, you are way above a reality show like American Idol. You were exactly right in replying to Simon Fuller’s request by asking, “Why should I do this?” You make more than American Idol could ever offer you, and if anything your legacy will be tainted by going on a sinking ship of a show like American Idol.
Geffen isn’t “above” anything…. ?? Why does everything have to be about money and social status? What about what is good for music and the music industry in America? He could have donated it all to starving children in Africa or Haiti or anything… so long as it isn’t too political, that would turn off viewers. Has anyone noticed that many of the Idol graduates have done quite well? Is it just too much “work” for him? I could certainly understand that he may not want to become a “star” and be hounded by photographers more than he likes. If that is the reason, I’m okay with it. But crap about being “above” it is snobbery.
I think that’s what “above it” means. He doesn’t need the money, and likely sees no value (for himself or society) in judging the show. He definitely is above that simple-minded nonsense.
Why would Geffen want to be a part of a show that has essentially destroyed the music industry and created some of the worst music in history, when he has spent his life building on the music industry with artists and bands that had true talent?
two words: GENE SIMMONS
Yes, please!
1 word: AMEN
You forgot to mention America… one of the biggest acts Geffen signed in the 70′s and partly responsible for the eventual success of the Eagles.
An Esquire writer, in the early ’80s, I think, recorded a phone conversation during which Geffen held out for more money for Neil Young (under a recording contract to him at that time) for a proposed recording reunion of Crosby, Stills and Nash, telling the caller that Young was the talent head and shoulders above the others. Pretty brutally honest and way on the money. You think being an Idol judge (on a show that hasn’t produced one artist of any merits except those that are commercial – hey, Sanjay) and having to say nice things with a mouth full of feces has appeal? I’d just love to hear his take on Carrie Underwood singing the Beatles “She’s Leaving Home” with an idiotic prom queen smile. Maybe he could play nice and endure the unendurable, but why bother? But Gene Simmons? I’m there. Fresh Air’s Terry Gross took him too seriously and didn’t get that her chained was being yanked, and he didn’t cut her any slack. Get some of that pro wrestling schistick. Shoot, I’d even watch Idol for more than five minutes, and break my personal record.
David Geffen had the question right — WHY would he do this?
And note….Geffen hasn’t been in the MUSIC business in a hundred…nay,a thousand years! Not that the music biz experience
seems necessary for this panel….Paula Abdul? Ellen Degeneres?
David Geffen got rich from being smart. And no one smart would go near that sinking show with a ten foot pole. (He did have the snark part down, though. He makes Simon Cowell look like Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm).
Hilarious that no one can even come close to a decent answer for the question that cuts to the heart of it, “Why should I do this?”
Exactly. He doesn’t need more money. He’s got the fame. And he still has his dignity, something the likes of Cowell can only seriously claim to have when considered in comparison to those around him. What, it will get Geffen a better table? Doubtful. Better access? Nope. Come on – it’s like actually having a choice as to whether you go to visit the in-laws! It’s an easy, “No, thanks.”
What’s funny is the incredulity at word that someone might be offered a shot at a reality TV show, and the offer would be declined.
Hey, let ‘em go ask Kate, or maybe Sarah Palin. Either will jump at it.
They didn’t make me an ‘Idol Judge’ either, oh well, life sucks.
