EXCLUSIVE: Graham King, who established himself as a producer by doing repeat business with talent like Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, Martin Scorsese and William Monahan, is fast developing that kind of relationship with Angelina Jolie.
I’m told GK Films is developing a feature adaptation of the 2009 British miniseries Unforgiven, and Christopher McQuarrie writing a script that’s being tailored for Jolie to play the lead role. Jolie, who next stars with Depp in the GK-financed Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck-directed thriller The Tourist (Columbia Pictures releases the film December 10), separately announced this week she’ll make her directing debut and produce with GK’s King and Tim Headington a Bosnian love story she has written.
McQuarrie, who just scripted X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2, was one of the writers on The Tourist. Unforgiven is about a woman’s attempt to rejoin society after she serves a 15-year prison stretch for the murder of two policemen. The tragedy happened after the policemen came to evict her family from their farmhouse. Her hope is to live quietly and reunite with her troubled younger sister, but the paroled woman is targeted for a revenge campaign by two sons of one of her victims. Suranne Jones played the lead in the mini, which was written by Sally Wainwright and directed by David Evans.
Jolie doesn’t commit to projects until scripts are completed, but I’m told this one is on a fast track. Jolie solidified her starpower this summer with the action-thriller Salt, which has grossed north of $217 million worldwide. Jolie’s repped by Media Talent Group’s Geyer Kosinski.
GK Films has been building momentum in a summer that saw Peter Schlessel leave his post as Sony Pictures president of worldwide affairs to run the company, and former Picturehouse and Apparition head Bob Berney has been rumored to be in line to start a specialty film distribution arm financed by King and Headington. GK has just begun shooting the 3D Martin Scorsese-directed adaptation of Hugo Cabret, and next opens the Ben Affleck-directed crime drama The Town on September 17 through Warner Bros.

Well I like that Angie seems to be picking some interesting roles.. I will so be seeing this if it happens. LOVED SALT..
I also think that her directing is interesting. This will actually be her second time behind the camera. She Directed A Place in Time. That was seen in high schools. I wish it was available. Great to see women actresses doing more and branching out. Not many women Directors so I think it is awesome that she is actually trying to do more. She is 35 and I think she is smart enough to not want to be stuck doing the same things for the future.
Yeah, the NEA distributed Angelina’s ‘A Place in Time,’ all over the country (worldwide too I believe) – it’s a great piece. Ann Hathaway, Ryan Gosling, a whole bunch of people are in it.
I saw SALT again this week! Love it!
It is a good move.
Her Bosnian love story is about a Bosnian woman who falls in love with her is rapist, a Serbian soldier and set during the recent Bosnian was for independence. What a load of crock and insult to women who’ve been raped. She even plans on playing the Bosnian!
That was a rumor and that was never the plot..
So maybe wait and see. I think it is based on another story..not a rape one..
Really some of you love to knock something before you have any facts.
You must be one of those folks who believes everything they read. I think you need to take a deep breath and wait to find out the actual facts before venting your rightous indignation.
This is like what their 3rd collaboration, right?
Wow! I still would really like to see her do Malefecent eventually, but I’m sure she and Burton can wait a couple years for that to be developed.
But this project sounds incredible. Can someone say Oscar?
Also some really interesting news about her directing/writing debut. It’s nice to see her get out of her comfort zone and hopefully she can prove herself as a competent film maker as well.
She’s badasss!!! So good to see a woman navigating the industry in the manner she does. Most women who looked like her would simply rely on their beauty. But she focuses on her craft — perfecting it, then calculating each subsequent move so she can forge a path that no other woman is treading. Badasssss!
Yes, but it’s another remake of a UK script.
Yeah, I too get a bit concerned about the “British Invasion” in both film and television (especially television). But to be honest, as a woman I’m just so proud of the way she handles herself professionally that it’s impossible for me to criticize her for going across the pond for the source material. In a town where girls are Botoxing while still in their teens, and women in their 40′s can’t sell a bottle of perfume without stripping naked, it’s just so inspiring to see a woman using her mind to garner real power and respect. A handful of other women are making their way as well (S. Bullock), but Jolie is just so damn smoooooth in her execution. Hope this project and her directorial effort are both smashing successes.
So refreshing to see a grown woman portraying real grown talent and doing interesting projects as an artist. At least you can see why she paid the big bucks.
I really love to see Angie in this movie, hope Angie will accept this role coz its look like suite with her. Sometime, i like to see her in harness and fell pity for her in film(not in reality)Love Angie forever….
Tom Cruise in Salt would’ve sucked.
Would’ve made less money, too. “Salt” is nearing $111 million, domestic.
He chose poorly.
She’s a great actress..really a unique talent, who can segue from big action pix–doing her own stunts, no less– to smaller, character-driven pieces. GIA is still one of my favorites..and GIRL INTERRUPTED. .. and agree w/the poster who observes that she doesn’t rest on her looks, alone, but uses her fame and power to try and make a difference in the world. She rocks! (loved SALT too–Noyce did a great job, and kudos, too, to the talented Robert Elswit, d.p. extraordinaire..that shot of Jolie in the fur hat/coat on the ferry going to meet up with her Russian comrades–just awesome!)
McQuarrie is on a tear. If nothing else, this will be a well written project, and that’s as good a start as one can have.
Wasn’t UNFORGIVEN the title of Clint Eastwood’s legendary movie? Why the hell can’t the producers come up with some other name? Are they so really so unintelligent? Are they truly that moronic??
well its based on the British miniseries, however well said nonetheless, it needs another name.
SALT would be a great action film if it wasn’t for Jolie. It’s embarrassing watching her run like some frail grandmother through city streets, and worse having to swallow that a person with her stick physique could possibly accomplish the things in this film the producers would like us to believe. It’s just howling-laughter bad to see Jolie kick-ass on anyone in sight, and not break a single bone hopping from one truck to another.
YOU HATE JOLIE THAT MUCH BUT YOU WATCH HER MOVIE. WHY DON’T YOU ACCEPT IT THAT SHE WAS REALLY GOOD IN SALT. JEALOUS MUCH AREN’T YOU?
Yes, because you believe that Matt Damon and Dan Craig can jump from a 10 story building and NOT break a bone? Shut up bish, get back to eating your pizza pie and watching Friends reruns. LOL When Damon or Cruise or Craig deliver 3 babies in 3 years, start bedding down in mud huts all over the world, fly planes across continents and chase after 6 kids under 8, then come talk to me about what they could do BETTER. …and she kick asss runs in this movie – what would have been ridiculous, is to see her toting 40 pounds of equipment in a back pack, as if it were filled with kleenex.
I remember Unforgiven when it was shown here – and it was brilliant. I think the story took place over 3 1 hr episodes. I can see Jolie doing this well. However, I agree with a previous comment – why does Hollywood keep doing retreads? The US is a nation stuffed with brilliant writers of all kinds. Perhaps it’s laziness. Hollywood wants something which is oven-ready and packaged, instead of creating something fresh from scratch.
It will be interesting to see if she can ‘play’ this part. Lately it has become harder and harder to see her in real roles. Always the characters are larger than life (a bit too over-the-top) and plots that verge on cartoonish narratives.
Lets hope this is a return to her glory days of acting.
“Chris,” you wrote, “Lately it’s become harder and harder to see her in real roles?” Well, sorry hon – but apparently it wasn’t hard for the Academy of Arts and Sciences, since she was just nominated for a Best Actress OSCAR in ’09 – last year.
.
You also say, “let’s hope this is a return to her glory days of acting,” which excuse me, was JUST LAST YEAR when she was nominated for OSCAR. Are you on the pipe or what??
.
Matter of fact, she’s actually been a staple several years in a row at the Globes, Critic’s Choice, Oscars, Indie Spirits, National Board, etc. – for both ‘A Mighty Heart,’ and ‘Changeling,’ two films that aren’t exactly ancient history.
.
So those of us who pay attention don’t know what you’re talking about.
.
Seems to me, if she can do a ‘Wanted,’ and in the same year, get nominated for Oscar for her dramatic acting, then that makes your point not only moot, but primarily ignorant.
.
Also, since it’s not like she is non-stop churning out multiple films in a row – so I really don’t even know what you’re talking about — she seems to balance her film choices quite well, and mixes it up. Showing she can bring in the bucks doing one kind of movie, and deliver the same way, in another. I submit her action films are as satisfying as they are because she ACTS her asss off in them.
.
So yeah – in other words, STFU.
Angelina Jolie is overrated. She’s a decent action star, but that’s about it, and she’s soon going to be too damn old to be doing those, plus she looks borderline anorexic. It would help if she would eat something.
Yes, Salt broke even domestic, whoop-dee-do! And before anyone says it, I don’t like Aniston either.
This seems way too Oscar-baity, perhaps she’ll be as over the top and embarassing as she was in Changeling “I want MYSON back! MYSON back!”
Whoa…looking a little green these days, Julianna. She was briliant in The Changeling as well as The Mighty Heart with a majority of positive reviews and award recognition to back me up.
Since “breaking even” means making $110 mil in an actioner in which she does her own stunts, I think a “whoop-dee-do” is indeed in order, especially since she’s nearly matched that number in foreign (with some territories not yet reporting). And we haven’t even begun to discuss ancillary potential. As for her soon being too old to play action, if she were the kind of actress known for playing only ONE genre (if only I could think of someone to use as an example), and spent the majority of her time posing naked on magazine covers to promote her projects, then yes, age would indeed be a major factor for consideration. But she ISN’T that kind of actress. She knows how fleeting time is for women in this industry, so she has used hers wisely by building a diverse cinematic portfolio, and now branching out to behind-the-scenes work. You won’t see her making a fool of herself by trying to play the ingenue in her mid 40′s, as some “actresses” do. She will be playing age-appropriate roles, assuming by then she is not exclusively in the the far more powerful behind-the-camera position.
Meow, Julianna. Pull in the claws.
Dear ‘Juliana’ — your hostility is showing. But let me ask you, would that be ‘embarrassing,’ enough to earn Jolie her second Oscar nomination, to go with the Oscar she already owns? Actually, that should have been her third nomination, as she deserved one for ‘A Mighty Heart,’ too and everybody knows it.
.
Do people realize how stupid as fck, and obviously pea green w/ jealousy they look when they come on here insulting people who’ve been racking up acting awards since they were 19. If the late graet Pauline Kael likens you to Brando, my guess is, there should be no debate at what the woman can deliver.
.
Look hon, go back to tanning, smoking and blowing Perez Hilton’s boyfriend John Mayer. It’s what you do best. LMAO
Revenge. Killing. Murder. Whoopee! If she’s so great lets see her do something other than shoot people with those bony little hands.
You know what would REALLY be something to see? Watching her get roundly SLAUGHTERED at the box office by a young rapper whom few people have ever heard of named BOW WOW. Watching the great Jolie suffer THAT kind of public HUMILIATION, now THAT would be something quite unbelievable. Don’t hold your breath though. Jolie will never be THAT much of a box office LOSER.
I see she took a note from Clint Eastwood’s book.
over rated, one dimensional acting. on to her 2nd nose job, boob job, chin and cheek implants…too skinny and skanky. tho I’ll give her kudos for being a UN Ambassador…
So just WHEN is she planning to stay home and take care of her kids again? I thought she was supposed to take a year off?
She never said she was taking a year off. She has not worked since The Tourist wrapped..plus unlike a lot of women she is with a man that puts her career on par with his own. Brad does not work when she works and she does not work when he does. Their children like many children have 2 PARENTS.. your snark is obvious. But I am sure it is only directed towards Jolie. PLUS how is it ANY of you business. I doubt she is calling your ass to babysit. She makes what 1 or 2 film a year (no more then 3 months each) and you and others have the nerve to make stupid comments when other actresses are putting out 3 or 4 in a year.. Yeah this is 2010 not the dark ages. Women in this world work and still are parents to their children. She is getting ready to direct a short film, and have no doubt Brad and family will be by her side. YOU and the other nasty Hags can chew on that. Maybe if you freaks spent more time seeing the movies of you IDOL they would not be bombing all over the place. I hope Angie works and works and works.. just to piss you idiot off. This site is about movies.. not her as a parent.
Now lets here your complaint about Sandra B, Reese, Jennifer G, Halle B.. and all the other mothers working with kids.
Yeah thought not.
This is incredible news! I saw ‘A Place in Time,’ at the Tribeca Film Festival and I thought it was a brilliant piece that she did – Angelina totally rocks behind a camera. As an actor, my GOD would I love to be directed by her. Okay, my fanboy is showing. LOL
Angie has 6 kids , not 1 or 2. She should stay home, her acting sucks. BTW the tourist is a bomb, depp and jolie can’t act, read the reviews.
