EXCLUSIVE: The founders of Facebook aren’t the only game-changing geeks poised to have their story told on a movie screen. Michael London’s Groundswell Productions has teamed with producer John Morris to acquire movie rights to the Ken Auletta book Googled: The End of the World As We Know it. They will use the book as the blueprint for a feature film that tells the story of Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page and the fast rise of the juggernaut web business that made them billionaires.
The book was published last fall by Penguin. Auletta, the media columnist for The New Yorker, chronicled a business that grew into a search engine-driven octopus whose $20 billion in ad revenue last year was more than the major broadcast networks combined. CEO Eric Schmidt predicted to Auletta that Google will become the world’s first $100 billion media company.
While the Facebook founder story being told in the upcoming David Fincher-directed The Social Network revolves around a group of Harvard pals who squabbled in success, the Google narrative plays out differently. Google was formed by the duo while they were Stanford Ph.D students who had ideas on how to make a better search engine. They founded Google on principles like “You can make money without doing evil” and “You can be serious without a suit.” London said the movie will focus on how they tried to hang onto their idealism as Google became a global phenomenon. The challenge for London and Morris is to find a handle on a success story that makes for compelling screen drama.
“It’s about these two young guys who created a company that changed the world, and how the world in turn changed them,” London told me. “The heart of the movie is their wonderful edict, don’t be evil. At a certain point in the evolution of a company so big and powerful, there are a million challenges to that mandate. Can you stay true to principles like that as you become as rich and powerful as that company has become? The intention is to be sympathetic to Sergey and Larry, and hopefully the film will be as interesting as the company they created.”
ICM’s Ron Bernstein brokered the book deal with Groundswell’s London and Morris, a hi-tech industry investor and film producer. London and Morris will fund development together. Groundswell is in post production on the Tom McCarthy-directed Win Win, and next releases the Andrew Jarecki-directed All Good Things with Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst and Frank Langella starring. Morris produced the Showtime Boris Yeltsin pic Spinning Boris.

I HAVE A FELLING THIS WILL, BE ABOUT THE FILTHY RICH, CARS, 34 ROOM MANSIONS, LIMOUS, TEQUILLIA&SCOTCH ALL YOU CAN DRINK TYPE OF FILM. IT SHOULD JUST FLY OFF THE SHELF AFTER HALF OF US ARE STRUGG;LING IN THIS COUNTRY. INTERESTING HERE WE GO AGAIN, TOO BE GRILlED ON THE RICH- famous. cant wait/
In this free country…maybe even YOU could have developed a successful concept and company as Google. Keep trying, Bud. Use your God given talent on the positive side of the human equation!!
The success of GLADIATOR meant we had endure TROY and ALEXANDER, let’s hope this knock-off fares better.
cmon…zzzzzzzz. who are they going to cast to play these nerds?
why a couple of fresh from college , no concept of real life nooglers of course. Or they could play themselves affect would be the same.
I hope it’s not sympathetic to the two. They’ve totally sold out on ‘don’t be evil’, first with their dealings with the Chinese government, and now with their deal with Verizon to destroy net neutrality. Boo Google!
It’s kinda fun watching dippy leftist cults tie themselves in knots, isn’t it?
Also funny how the Totalitarian Left running Google has no problems aiding the Totalitarian Chinese.
“Don’t be evil”, my ass.
Would love to see the edgy take on these guys… if cast right this could be like “Wall Street” for the Silicon Valley era… hopefully they don’t whitewash this
Boringgggg…..Another waste of money.

How original. I guess desperate times call for desperate measures.
This will be boring. There is no conflict. These people are good people and haven’t changed. They still give a ton to charity, they help others, fight for their beliefs…they didn’t steal the idea, want to be famous and WILL NOT get a David Fincher to direct their movie.
Oh…that being said…I didn’t mean that all negative. It is great that they are good people doing great things. It just doesn’t make an interesting movie.
Just answer me one question… Is there or is there not a role for Justin Timberlake in this?
paging Apple, Dell, HP, IBM, et. al.
Lots of product placement opportunities in films about Google.
In the 90′s we had Pirates Of silicon Valley, but that was a TV film.
You jealous little pricks! All a yous. These guys are awesome! Can’t wait for the film.
Thank you.
Certainly a worthy topic – these guys have done a lot to change the world we live in. We’ll see if a compelling drama can be created from it. Unless it’s a comedy.
I’m really excited about this movie. Now I think I can sell my movie “The BP Story: We are nice guys and we have a Green company, just look at our logo!” It’s a great story about good guys trying to clean up the environment and keep it real. I’m excited for the average joe! When was the last time you found something you were searching for on google that wasn’t an ad sponsor, wikipedia, facebook, or a dictionary entry? Google has turned the internet into the Tijuana border, with 1,000 people trying to sell me something I don’t want every time I jump on. It’s like that Dave Chapelle internet skit. I will pirate this movie big time. Any Skandinavian server will do. By the way, has anyone paid any attention to these guys position on piracy and their agenda with Google TV. If you work in the tv or movie business you should be aware that these commies are antichrist and will destroy the “business” of making movies and tv by giving away all content, financed by our tax dollars and by investors who are the lifeblood of the economy, to feed their own leviathan advertising vacuum. You will have no job in 3 years because they will just keep selling you lapbands during commercial breaks of “Family Matters” episodes until we run out of oil and the lights go out. If I google “Google Movie” will I see video footage of the bp oil spill live feed?
Zzzzzzz. Good luck with trying to make this into a compelling screen drama.
When was the last time you wrote a check to Google? They provide so many free services that everyone uses everyday. They are an amazing company. Where else can you get a personalized free phone number with text messaging and voice mail? Google Voice.
Because of these free services they are able to make billions.
I’m a big fan of Google. I wouldn’t knock them unless you understand them.
Not that I am shocked, but why all of the negative comments. This story deserves an A list director and can afford one. Looking forward to it.
I love the story behind the guys, but agree that there is very little conflict. I mean I’m sure there are internals and people that have “wanted” to be evil (putting profits before the product or something).
I would almost rather see an updated version of Pirates of the Silicon Valley documenting the web 2.0 era…with Steve Jobs of course still being a major player.
Not that the story of Google isn”t an interesting one, but is a feature film the best route of telling that story? What I would rather see is a one hour documentary type story that could really focus on a lot more important points, you can cover a lot more ground that way. Stories like this just aren’t feature film material, so you run the risk of boring the hell out of your audience. I recall a cable show that was titled “The History of Invention”, ( I think that was the title), this would be a much better format for the Google story, and many other stories of innovation. Five gold stars for all the people at Google! *****
just because the name of your company is a verb doesn’t mean you deserve a movie about your life or company.
why not a feature film about steven jobs or bill gates? and i don’t count that one with ryan phillippe and tim robbins. both of these guys have transformed the world (jobs and gates, that is. not phillippe and robbins).
i even think a film about larry ellison would be more interesting. at least he’s not a geek.
Antitrust? That’s a guilty pleasure to watch. I love that scene with Robbins stuffing his face with Pringles pretending to look computer-cool.
Will the Google movie be right up to date; like where they screwed up Google Image Search?
Thanks for coming.
Where is the movie audience for a film about two guys who become billionaires when the world-wide economy is still tanking? Fittingly, the movie adaptation belongs pirated for free on Google.
Here’s the conflict: How two guys ran around saying don’t be evil then aid the largest totalitarian government?
If you don’t like stories about repressed people who are sent to prison (and not the fun American kind) for trying to enjoy the same freedoms as Americans, then how about this conflict: Two guys ran around saying don’t be evil then destroyed the very thing that made them filthy rich?
How about this movie: By getting in bed with Verizon, Google exposed every media outlet for what it wants to be; in control of information.
The internet is over, folks. Thank Google.
Having read the book, which I did enjoy, my question is whether the movie will be a drama or a documentary. Either way, it isn’t likely to be a box-office hit.
Well said Swen. Anyone can do it. I don’t know what this deadbeat idiot was thinking.
Here we go. Now Hollywood will do a run on this type of movie. What’s next? Bio pics of Vimeo or Firefox? Where’s the Napster bio pic?
Such a movie would detract from all that google aim to achieve in the next 10 years.
