EXCLUSIVE: The summer of TV resurrections continues with a third-season pickup of The Life & Times Of Tim at HBO. The 10-episdode order of the MRC/Good Humor TV-produced animated comedy comes 2 months after HBO cancelled the underrated series by Steve Dildarian. At the time, MRC took the project to Comedy Central, Adult Swim and TBS. Tim, about a guy who finds himself in increasingly awkward situations at work and at home, has been a cult favorite and a popular series among comedy writers. It started off as a 2007 pilot at Fox produced by Warner Bros. TV and studio-based Good Humor TV. MRC eventually took over the project and set it up at HBO with a 10-episode order. The second season of Tim, which was executive produced by Dildarian, Leynete Cariapa, Mike Clements, Jimmy Miller and Tom Werner, ran in a block with another MRC-produced animated comedy series, freshman The Ricky Gervais Show, which also has been renewed. With its happy ending, the story of Life & Times joins the June series pickup by A&E of Breakout Kings, a drama pilot that was passed on by Fox in May. Then in July, CBS and 20th TV reached a deal for a midseason series order to drama pilot Chaos after the two sides’ negotiations had broken off and the options on the actors had expired.

YES! I’m so glad that HBO realized that they had a genuinely FUNNY animated TV show on their hands!
YAY!
That’s fantastic. Might be the funniest show on tv.
Great news. This show is really effing funny.
Wise decision. Great show.
This is a funny show with some great improv. I’m glad it’s back.
This made my day
this is fantastic!!!
Having only seen one episode of “Tim,” I can’t praise it too much; however, I will say that this seems to be a smart move for HBO. I’ve become increasingly supportive of Sue Naegle. Everybody has said that she is one of the most “writer-friendly” executives out there, and “Tim” is mostly talking heads.
I think all networks (broadcast, cable, and others) have learned their lesson about pulling cult favorites from loyal audiences. I was really surprised that “Arrested Development” didn’t have a life on one of the Fox-owned cable properties. No executive wants to repeat the whole “Family Guy” saga, so “Tim” could be pervasive permanent fixture for some time to come. I love the humor; it’s far less campy than typical Seth McFarlane fare. It really reminds me of Glenn Eicher and Mike Judge material.
With “Tim” back on the slate for HBO, what are Showtime’s plans for 2D animated series? David Nevins — lets get creative.
Dildarian is great. This is my favorite show on TV. Good work HBO.
I concur. I don’t know why they took it off in the first place. They must have gotten some nasty mail, or a lot of subscriptions cancelled. I know I have to renew HBO again!
Yes! My friends and I love this show. Thanks whoever made this happen.
great news — now I know why i saw joe hipps mowing down a salad at kate mantilinis
The writing on that show is so funny! I think it will get that chance it needs now.
Can’t wait to watch the new shows.
Thank you HBO!
Joe Hipps is a GD stud.
That makes me happy! Congrats!
Learning how to spell ‘episode’ would be a nice start
Please don’t call this show “animated” …it’s an insult to actual animated shows that are actually, ya know…ANIMATED.
I’d love to see HBO or Showtime do an animated show with actual art direction, character design…and fucking inbetweens! If they can make great looking shows like Dexter, True Blood, Bored to Death, etc…why does their “animation” have to look like it was scribbled by drunks?
Even if it looks shitty and has a very inconsistent aesthetic, it is still animated. The reason this show can be picked back up is because it’s so cheap to make. It costs about a third of what a traditionally animated show costs. Also, this way they don’t have to hire union artists. In fact no union except the actors is linked to this show from what I can tell.
Not to mention that for a show that is “writer friendly” it’s not a writers guild show.
A show can be low budget and have zero animation like Tim…but it can still at least look decent. They reuse the same assets over and over…why not draw somewhat appealing characters from the getgo for your assets? Even South Park’s characters are appealing compared to Tim. Beavis and Butthead are funny to look at. When I look at Tim, it just insults me to the core…it may be funny – but I’m so disgusted by the visuals, I can’t bring myself to stick with it…especially since it’s on HBO!!! This might be acceptable for youtube….but HBO? HBO should pick up Boondocks…which, by the way, is a low budget show that looks AMAZING (and it’s funny).
Do you really become sick as a result of watching this show?
Or could yours be the sort of bad writing one wouldn’t see on this show.
U know you do have the option to turn it off, right?
Couldn’t it be that the script compensates for the animation?
Hopefully you find a show you enjoy watching instead of insulting.
Everyone else seems to love this ANIMATED.
people who get hung up on animation and aesthetics dont deserve to make a comment, the show is great and the sketchy animation lends itelf well to its lazy, drunken and, ironically, well drawn characters
Where is it written that every show on television has to be union from top to bottom? Do you not watch South Park because of this?License fees dictate the ability to do this. All that matters is whether the show is funny or not and this show IS FUNNY!

Being Union and being funny are 2 different things. Unions like the Writers Guild, IATSE, SAG and the animation guild protect employees and make sure they are paid fairly. Remember the writers strike??
Being funny costs nothing.
The reason this show is so cheap is because MRC does not pay in to any union other than SAG. Name another show that does that.
And you are right. you could just hire a bunch of overseas workers to crank out these crap like it was a pair chinos and it might look a little better or a little worse and nobody would care. But good shows usually have good artists and in animation the artwork is important to telling the story whether it’s funny or not.
Fantastic! Happy to see another season.
Good job HBO, horribly underrated show.
Genius. Perhaps HBO wanted to turn Tim into a household word, instead of word-of-mouth. Announcing that there would be no season 3, infuriating us and causing this very outcome. Yesssss! Dildarian!!!
BEST SHOW ON TV. THE REAL DEAL, SIGN THIS GUY TO INFINITY.
Amazing! Thank you HBO. I mean how much could this really cost to produce? This could be your “Louie”
Any word on the progress of season 3?
