EXCLUSIVE: Idris Elba has signed to play Dr. Alex Cross in Cross, a new installment of James Patterson’s bestselling murder mystery series that will be directed by David Twohy. Kerry Williamson wrote the script. Elba takes over the role originated by Morgan Freeman, who played the sleuth in the Paramount Pictures thrillers, 1997′s Kiss the Girls and 2001′s Along Came A Spider. Twohy is doing a rewrite.
In the novel, Cross tracks a serial rapist who may have murdered his pregnant wife years before. The film is being produced by Lloyd Levin, Belle Avery and Leopoldo Gout, along with the author and Steve Bowen.
Production will begin in 2011, likely in the spring. The film will be privately financed and distribution is being set. Paramount is a possibility.
There are few franchises out there with a black actor in the lead role. So this is a big star-making step for the British actor who emerged from the HBO series The Wire and into films like RocknRolla, American Gangster, Obsessed and The Losers. He just wrapped the role of Heimdall in Marvel’s Thor, and next stars in the Screen Gems heist film Takers, which opens August 27.
Elba has also kept his hand in TV. After a memorable arc in NBC’s The Office last season, he played the title role in the British detective miniseries drama Luther, and will next be seen in an arc of episodes playing Laura Linney’s love interest in the new Showtime series The C Word. Elba is repped by ICM, The Schiff Company and UK-based Ken McReddie Associates.

Great, great choice. This man is one of the best screen male actors in the business and probably the best choice for Alex Cross. I loved Morgan Freeman but he has aged to much for the role. I hope Idris Elba can stick around for more than 1.
I am a huge fan of James Patterson, and Morgan Freeman was nothing like I ever envisioned Alex Cross. I really was disappointed, way to old and so wrong for the part.
This guy seems perfect, exactly what I envisioned. I watched him on the office and had no idea he was British. Great job as well.
Stringer as Alex Cross? Hmmmmm…..this could be good. The book was excellent, so I got high hopes for String on this one
Excellent choice! Idris is an excellent actor with an amazingly humble personality, not to mention he is BEAUTIFUL. I wish him much success.
Am I the only 1 who noticed that they said his wife was pregant when she was killed? That was not in the book
IDRIS is perfect….couldn’t ask for a greater actor….I am a true Alex Cross fan and was highly disappointed when Morgan F. was cast as ALEX…I went ballistic and boycotted both movies they were SOOOOO wrong MFreeman is a great actor but not as ALEX Cross only good match was the Sampson character….Radio Raheem was perfect fit….haven’t seen him lately so don’t know if he can still fit the bill for Sampson M.C. Duncan is a good choice though
I love the choice!! Great actor who was great in the office
I like the choice but it seems weird to start with so (relatively) recent a book in the series if you want it to be a franchise reboot.
Why miss so many out?? gonna be an amazing film, good book choice!!!
Love this guy.. He has been outstanding in any role he has played.. Also, he just happens to be very handsome… Great choice for Alex Cross…yumm…yummm…
i think dennis haysbert from THE UNIT should play sampson
Hay why not make him the next James Bond. I think he would be very good for it.
I not only love James Patterson, I have read every book he has published. As for Alex Cross, he is my favorite character. i was a little upset when Morgan Freeman was cast as Alex. Wrong type of man and also too old for the part. However, Mr. Alba will be perfect and I will be waiting very impatiently for the movie to come out. I’ve been a fan of his since Sometime in April. Good luck and keep it coming Idris.
He’s shaping up to be a great actor, and should do the role of alex proud. just reading the cross fire book at the min, near done and it is brilliant. the books just keep getting better and better.
I do not know Mr. Alba, but Morgan Freeman (who is a wonderful actor) wasn’t only to old to play Alex he wasn’t drop dead gorgeous enough either. Alex is someone who women stop on the street to stare at. If Mr Alba has to back out I would vote for Shemar Moore, I drool over him on Criminal minds every single week.
Perfect choice. He is one of those actors that is cool without trying to be. I look for great things from him in his career.
This is wonderful news. Idris Elba was amazing in The Wire. After The Wire, I thought Idris Elba’s career surely would sky-rocket, but it didn’t. I just saw Luther recently and his acting was phenomenal. It seems to me that he hasn’t received the acting recognition he deserves, at least in the United States. Perhaps this will make all the difference.
Maybe if he were to focus only on acting, and not singing too, he would be better off? It’s difficult to do well at any one thing if one spreads themselves too thin. But Idris Elba might be the one who can pull both off!
As much as I like Jamie Fox, and Will Smith, it’s time for Idris to be recognized for his outstanding acting ability.
Perfect, he’ll do
How on earth could they replaced Idris Elba with Tyler Perry! Idris was perfect for the part!
i think james patterson books are great but i have always saw alex cross as morgan freeman…i do not believe any other actor can do him justice…
Check out facebook group “Idris Elba for Alex Cross” and let your thoughts be known. Judging by the comments there’s going to be a lot of people upset with the decision to go with Tyler Perry. Also where is John Sampson????? Is this movie actually going to be based on an Alex Cross novel or is it just a made for Screen script??? Dont the fans matter
As far as I am concerned, Morgan Freeman is Alex Cross. When I read the novels, I hear Mr. Freeman saying the words and picture him. I don’t care if he is old, he can still act. I was told by some that I was too old to go back to school at 65 but I did it and received a nursing degree. There is such a premium on being “young” in our society. Morgan Freeman may be “old” in the eyes of some, but he isn’t dead yet and can still act. Just like Sean Connery, I think both of them are still awesome.
does anyone know if the books have been done in order ?
im just reading them all on my e reader and up to the eighth book, will the films make sense out of sequence ???
