EXCLUSIVE: 20th Century Fox has rounded out the cast of X-Men: First Class, and the big surprise is that Mad Men star January Jones has been signed to play the role of Emma Frost, the gorgeous mutant with telepathic powers. At the same time, director Matthew Vaughn has set Zoe Kravitz to play Angel; Salvadore; Jason Flemyng will play Azazel, the father of Nightcrawler; Bill Milner to play the young version of Magneto (Michael Fassbender), and Morgan Lily to play the Young Raven. They join Fassbender, James McAvoy (Xavier), Nicholas Hoult (Beast) Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Caleb Landry Jones (Banshee), Lucas Till (Havoc), Edi Gathegi (Darwin), who round out the mutant contingent. Kevin Bacon is playing the villain, Rose Byrne will play McAvoy’s love interest Moira MacTaggert, and Oliver Platt is playing The Man in Black. Production begins August 23 in London.
UTA client Jones, who plays Mad Men‘s Betty Francis — the recently divorced wife of Don Draper (Jon Hamm) — will emerge from that 1960s setting to play Emma Frost, the mutant also known as the White Queen. While speculative reports had Alice Eve playing that role, no deal was concluded. Mad Men wraps its fourth season in early September, and she will be able to jump right into the role. Jones received her first Emmy nomination for Lead Actress in a Drama, for Mad Men.
Kravitz (the daughter of singer and Precious star Lenny Kravitz) is set to star in the upcoming George Miller-directed Mad Max: Fury Road; Flemyng most recently starred in Kick-Ass, Milner is best known from Son of Rambow and Lilly’s credits include Flipped and 2012.

J Dolla, there is a female character named “Angel” in the comics who had the powers of a housefly. She had veiny wings and could spit acid. Wolverine found and saved her when she was thrown out of her home. In later issues she lost her fly like powers and now goes by the name Tempest. Her new powers come from technology from her suit.
This project just looks more and more silly as time goes on. Several things seem very strange:
1) Continuity looks to be all over the place. Is First Class a prequel or a franchise reboot? Beast is 21 (and presumably blue-furred, otherwise there’s no point in having him in the script) in FC, but he shows up in a cameo as a normal guy in X2. Multiple Man is apparently showing up, even though he was first discovered (as a young man) in X3. Frost, Cyclops and Xavier have all been recast with actors who are similar ages, just for the sole purpose of having a love triangle theme? Even though Frost was a young girl (and Xavier was…well, Patrick Stewart) in X-Men Origins? What?
2) It seems to be lifting plot elements (like Azazel) from the Uncanny X-Men story “The Draco”, which (if it wasn’t forgotten already) is regarded as one of the worst X-storylines of the past decade.
3) The titular “first class” of the comics was comprised of Cyclops, Angel (the male one), Iceman, Beast and Jean Grey. Most of the mutants that will apparently show up in FC didn’t appear until the relaunch of the Uncanny X-Men line in the 70′s. So, it’s not even really the “first class”.
4) The cast doesn’t seem to inspire much confidence. Who’s going to be the selling point of the film? The only real star power is James McAvoy and Kevin Bacon (and even that’s a maybe, considering how the box office didn’t exactly light on fire when he played a villain in Hollow Man). Jones can’t open a film by herself.
5) How is this film going to juggle 15 characters (almost all of them with interesting backstories and plots in the comics) without severely short-shifting some of them?
6) Personally, I don’t understand why a wafer-thin, American woman would be cast in the part of a buxom, British intellectual. Say what you will about Alice Eve, but at least she looked to have the physical (and vocal) requirements down pat.
Totally agree. What is the aim of this movie? It looks like a bad mash up of X-book storylines with no regard to the comic or movie continuities.
Oh, and while I agree with the physical difference between JJ and Emma Frost, the character is actually from “New” England, not the original recipe.
It’s a prequel and Emma Frost is from Boston.
I remember January Jones on SNL. She was TERRIBLE. How can she play this character? Based on her opening monologue and all her skits on SNL, she only has one note – DULL.
Want to see Scott and Jean in the movie!!!!
I love Mad Men. I could never leave Don. She will be great for this part!
What’s funny is your eloquent criticism. “Any other actress could have done her role.”
Are these other actresses you??
Lol.
["UGH! REALLY!? Don’t you need someone with personality to play Emma Frost? January Jones has none. Love her as Betty Draper, but that’s cuz the role is the only type of role she can play."]
How in the fuck do you know what January Jones’ personality is really like? Are you a close and personal friend of hers? An acquaintance?
i am a ahh-mazing actress and i would love to star in this x-men movie and it would be great cuz i live only about 7-10 miles from there
Ok.
Angel Salvador is an african american girl who has the powers of an insect.
January Jones was a little-not-independant, but that reflects the role of women in the sixties. She looks like emma frost.
