EXCLUSIVE: The Juno team of director Jason Reitman, screenwriter Diablo Cody, Mandate Pictures and the production company Mr. Mudd are teaming again on Young Adult with Charlize Theron starring. The film’s being produced by Cody, Mason Novick, Lianne Halfon and Russell Smith of John Malkovich’s Mr. Mudd banner. Mandate’s Nathan Kahane and Malkovich are exec producers. I’m told that Reitman has brought in Indian Paintbrush’s Steven Rales to possibly co-finance with Mandate and he will be an exec producer as well. Several studios are interested in making the picture, but it hasn’t crystallized yet. The plan is to get the film into production in New York on November 10 if all works out, with Reitman directing. Cody won an Oscar for her Juno script and Reitman was also nominated.
Theron plays a ghostwriter of young adult novels who plots to reclaim her identity. Her campaign involves going back and rekindling a relationship with her high school boyfriend — who’s freshly married, is a new father, and wants no part of her. While she works on her plan, the ghostwriter reengages with high school acquaintances and their experiences in trying to fulfill all those high school hopes and dreams that often get crushed by the realities of life.

Isn’t this basically Never Been Kissed?
No. Never Been Kissed was about a reporter going undercover in HS and ending up falling in love with a teacher.
There is nothing in the above synopsis that even sounds like Never Been Kissed. And while Ms. Theron is still gorgeous, she wouldn’t be able to pass for a HS kid if she tried.
No, never been kissed was about a girl who did not get the full hs experience, who goes back to hs for an assi and she deals with the hurt of hs, exp what it feels like to be apart of something, and falls in love.
I cannot imagine this movie will not end along those grounds.
has to be one the most boring, predictable scripts I’ve ever read. Uber-American and middle-American at that. wonder why Theron was attracted. JUNO 2 this is not.
Wow, calling a script “Uber-American” is a diss? That’s really interesting. WTF does that even mean? Does Syvester Stallone make an appearance?
sounds f*cking horrible. why, jason, why?
Isn’t it a little presumptuous to say it sounds “horrible?” I dunno. I would say Reitman’s earned at least your trust in his judgment of projects. But, hey, that’s just me. I guess three straight financially successful, critically acclaimed, completely original movies in a row doesn’t buy you shit anymore…
you forgot jennifer’s body.
Sounds, uhm, phukking awful.
What’s up haters. You’re all just lime green jealous.
Actually heard the script is really solid.
Well if you heard so, it must be true.
The plot is a yawner, Theron can’t open a movie and no one cares about Diablo Cody anymore. Her 15 minutes are up. It was actually closer to 13…
From the comments here it would appear that the only celeb with 15 minutes left is Justin Bieber.
Really, people are still being dupes into making films with one-hit wonder Diablo Cody? Yikes. I guess everyone will just pretend Jennifer’s Body never happened and continue to think Juno is any good (or an original idea for that matter). She is the biggest sham since since those 2 dread singer dudes.
You’re right – because no screenwriter in HISTORY has ever written two good scripts. Everyone should just give up on a screenwriter who’s second screenplay isn’t a hit.
IS YOUR COMMENT A JOKE?
Seriously, I’m starting to think this bizarre hatred of Diablo Cody is just jealousy that a woman received a best screenplay Oscar – AND she’s attractive.
And what have you done again, Mr. Real?
Script’s terrific. Taxi Driver-esque. Okay, not that heavy – or dark – but closer to that than Never Been Kissed. I read it picturing Elizabeth Banks, but Theron’ll do.
@Helen Cellar-
“Taxi Driver-esque… but not heavy – or dark”?
WTF does that mean? That’s like saying “Willy Wonka-esque, but no bright colors – or candy.”
What’s wrong with my #1 fave actresses decision power lately? She’s been making bombs ever since her Oscar from “Monster” and I’m wondering just what’s going on with her to be making stinkers ever since! Here is more proof of furture bomb-dom. This movie will probably end up doing 5mil AT BEST and be swept under the carpet with the rest of her bombs.
Can someone please tell my #1 fave actress in the whole wide world to FIRE HER AGENT? Pull-ease?!!!!
Monster 2?
Ari Eman— at WME
I hope she drops out – I mean taking a movie like this drops her caliber even lower. She used to be bigger than Angie – now she has fallen below Angie and will fall harder if she doesn’t start making smarter choices.
why blame her agent? she’s bland. nobody can change that. ever watch sporting events with her in attendace? the camera pans by and the commentators never recognize her.
she’s the south african version of nicole kidman.
I don’t get the hate. Sounds like a movie to me. I love the idea of the YA author who’s lost her identity to her persona. That’s a great start. As a dude I may not rush out to see it, but hey – I’ve heard a lot of much less interesting ideas lately.
Why all the hatred? Reitman is a fantastic filmmaker and i am not surprised he is going back to the Cody well for another great script. Juno was a smash and while Jennifers Body was not a hit, this writer has an emmy award winning tv show. 2 out of 3 is a better batting average than almost anyone in this town has and that may explain the hatred that is spewed by losers that cant cut it.
There we go. Anyways, for that 1of3 misfires, I like to blame Karyn Kusama.
Gotta say I’m with RJ on this one. Jason Reitman is 3 for 3 at the age of 33. And that’s not 3 for 3 on base, that’s 3 for 3 home runs. All the haters on this page sound like people who’ve never made a movie before. As usual.
Diablo writes on instinct less than craft, for sure, but she’s got good instincts and her lack of craft is less of a problem when you’ve got a guy like Jason guiding the process.
And all the jealous wannabes who slag Charlize because “she hasn’t opened a movie since… blah blah” know next to nothing about what goes into a hit movie. The girl can act and she takes risks. Ask top directors what they think of her and that’s your answer.
The amateurs on this site have really started to lower the level of the discourse. Ugh.
Diablo Cody is the COurtney Love of screenwriters (and I’m not talking about the ex-stripper past) – for all the female empowerment talk they both produce their best work when paired with a man. Courtney had Kurt and Trent Reznor and Billy Corgan – without them she is a mess. Diablo had Jason Reitman – perhaps he will do an Ed Norton on her script again.
As for Juno – Cody owes a huge debt to the adorable Ellen Page and Michael Cera for infusing the clever-for-clever’s sake dialogue with charisma and personality that was not on the page.
(Indeed, re Megan’s Body – you can see what a Diablo Cody script is like without an intelligent actress in the lead role.)
As for her “Emmy winning show” US of Tara – the award went to superb actress Toni Collette, not the show, who also brought an intelligence and 3-dimensionality that was not in the script. (In fact the first Diablo Cody penned season was widely acknowledged as awful – US of Tara only picked up in the 2nd season after the new showrunners were brought in and revamped the entire tone of the show – its now smarter, funnier and humanistic.)
Ahh, crap. Is this going to interfere with Diablo’s internet talk show?
This is just another trendy hip aren’t we all so special voices of our generation kind of project.
Hence, it will make 4 dollars at the box office.
However, relationships in the industry will guarantee it gets nominated for multiple awards. It will also inspire a must have soundtrack full of artists you want to punch in their hipster frames.
If it’s at Mandate, I can guarantee you Nicole Brown has her muddy paws all over it. She’s soooooo passionate about good material. Yawn.
“Muddy paws”?
Nicole’s good people. You, evidently, are not. I don’t give a damn about Reitman or Cody or their careers right now, and awards shows are all for publicity anyway.
Maybe you know the business well enough to name-check people, but you are a slime and you come off like a sniveling, poisonous little toad.
Finally got an opportunity to catch Jennifer’s Body on Cinemax over the weekend… thought it coupled well with Passion Cove and that Co-Ed series. Great stuff.
wait til u see her next doozie…the story of the traveling dildo saleslady. (not a joke)…
It’s clearly an AWFUL description of the movie — likely generated by an agent’s assistant that shouldn’t be near the English language — but it’s being produced and directed by creative people that have proved to have good taste in the past.
What is with all the Charlize bashing of late? She’s a stunning beauty and outstanding talent. Who’s driving the stakes into her creative grave? Jeez…are you all that stone cold…check out her work again…she has style, class and lights up the screen…Get off it!
Hallie Berry, Charlize, Nicole Kidman, Hillary Swank all need to fire their agents. Reese Witherspoon too.
Are they all with Kevin Huvane at CAA? He can agent a female movie star in her prime into the ground.
Why is there so much hate for Diablo Cody? I went to her imdb page once to check something out and was really shocked – the entire message board was just spewing hate for her. I think she’s fantastic writer and Jason Reitman obviously knows a good script when he sees one – Juno, Up In the Air, etc.
God forbid that any woman should have some confidence and personality.
You hit the nail on the head.
Talented writer + looks = every woman in Hollywood hates her.
Diablo Cody gives everyone in America the hope that the one script they wrote at night while they were an accountant or working at Best Buy by day will make them famous. Please. Juno was popular with Christian Conservatives because she carried the baby to term and didn’t terminate even though she was fairly intelligent and only in high school. Sure that would really happen. This movie sounds really really terrible, and deserved two “reallys”.
Sorry folks. Guess I’m immature but I loved Juno. It had a fresh voice and was original. I will say that I thought the songs were a little awkward though.
Actually, the music was one of the most defining and endearing aspects of the film. A bold and spot-on choice.
Let’s look at this plot.
A ghostwriter (named Diablo Cody) of young adult (movies) novels who realizes she has no identity with her pseudonym (Diablo Cody) and plots to reclaim her identity.
Woohoo Diablo rocks, Jennifer’s Body should have won an Oscar!
Listen all you PHD’S. Playa Hatin’ Degrees. Shut up. Go finish your spec and have someone other than your mom read it!!
I was, I guess, one of the few who found the “Juno” script more annoying than anything. So I guess part of me hopes “Diablo Cody’s” time is at the 15. But I do love Charlize.
Juno was horrible, it’s sad seeing such a non-talented writer get the kudos they don’t deserve.
Hey, Jealousy.
