MTV has renewed original comedy series The Hard Times of RJ Berger for a second season with an order for 12 new episodes. The coming-of-age, about a late-blooming loser, did so-so in its premiere following the MTV Movie Awards. But, while not a breakout hit like some of MTV’s reality series, Hard Times has quietly built audience, posting a 31% increase among P12-34 in the past four weeks. The first season finale airs Aug. 23. “We are 100% committed to scripted programming, and our current reality hits like Teen Mom, If You Really Knew Me, and, of course, Jersey Shore, provide an incredibly solid foundation for us to launch scripted series and let them gain traction,” MTV president of programming Tony DiSanto said. “That’s key, because whereas reality tends to burn bright and fast, scripted series take time to grow. Plus we have been so heavily branded as a reality network it will take a beat for our viewers to embrace
this new diverse slate on the channel.”

Have you watched even a single episode of this program, TD? I doubt it. If you had, you’d know that this is the best non-reality execution on this channel in ages. The show is silly, hilarious and packed with dick jokes. What else could you ask for in a comedy?
As for the viewers, it actually does take time to build a audience for scripted shows when a channel has been as concentrated in unscripted fare as MTV. But you were too busy trying to be clever to think of that.

True I only saw the pilot episode, but everything about this show is wrong. It’s sad that MTV pushes this shit on its audience. I look at this year’s movie awards with all the bleeped out cursing. Lowest Common Demoninator. With Twitter, Facebook and shit like this show we are breeding a generation of morons who will never read a newspaper or read a fucking book. WE. ARE. DOOMED!

as a writer who has worked with the development team at MTV and worked at other nets around town for years. i think the network execs are top-notch with their scripted creators. They are smart, supportive and totally committed to helping bring new talent to TV opposed to the other nets that only support proven showrunners. there are fewer and fewer outlets for scripted and scripted that is creative and inspired. I say rock on MTV! Keep building a new scripted net and giving an opportunity for new kids to break out!

RJ Berger is an instant classic!!!!! We have nights where everyone comes over to only watch this show! I’m talkin people from the ages of 21 +……..Shows like this have been a dying breed. This show has everything, a healthy portion of adult content, not to mention its just witty and the characters dynamic! Great writing and unpredictability have made this show in my opinion the best show this year! If you havent seen this show I highly recommend it! RJ is the man and we can all relate to him in some way or another. Hope this show holds ground and has as many seasons as possible! Respect to the Berger!

i think this show is amazing,its sexual, funny, and it apeals to everyone,come on, anyone can relate to this show. im so tred of watching nothing but dumb reality shows.i’d rather watch this show anyday. bring on season 2!!!!

I don’t believe that calling it trash is a fair synopsis of hard times… This show provides a much needed “no-kids-allowed” comic-release from the various diurnal stressors of proletarian life. To essentially say that this show will be a harbinger for widespread complacency is idiotic. It’s just an innocuous tv program made to give levity to our own nostalgia for our high school days. I have kids, and I work nearly 80 hours a week, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t read books or spend time polishing my erudition. Everyone has their vices, and to deny so is to deny your humanity which would make you a fool.

I LOVE this show and have been waiting for its return. In a world of nothing but reality shows- this was a keeper! Wonderful, now just more of the retarded Jersey Shore assholes!!
