It is the often-forgotten member of the NBC late-night lineup that stayed clear of the network’s recent late-night shakeups. But quietly, Last Call with Carson Daly will reach a decade on the air after NBC announced today that it is renewing the daily 1:35 AM-2:05 AM show for a 10th season with Stewart Bailey returning as executive producer. Additionally, Alex Coletti (MTV’s Unplugged) as the new executive producer of the network’s annual NBC’s New Year’s Eve with Carson Daly.
“I really feel that Last Call has hit its stride,” said former MTV star Daly. “I am glad Stewart is coming back because he is incredibly smart and he owes me 35 dollars. Likewise, Alex is great, he produced MTV’s ‘Unplugged.’ He assures me we will have electricity for the New Years Eve show.” Coletti’s credits also include the halftime shows for Super Bowls XXXVIII and XXXV. Coletti’s production company also produced the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular for NBC.

The show was horribly awful back when they were trying to make Carson Daly into a stand-up comic and have him do monologues and skits. Except for the escalator ride thing, almost all of their jokes were just copying what Conan O’Brien’s staff was doing.
BUT what they’ve been doing the past year is really working and I actually find myself enjoying the show now. Carson is out in the field doing interviews with interesting people. He’s more in his element. The show seems fresher and hipper. And it’s just so much better than when they were trying to force Carson to be something he isn’t.
I completely agree. I’ve found that most people I talk to about his show don’t realize it’s different. You’re right – he’s back in his element and he’s not trying to be funny. Good for them.
Yes. It’s kind of a throwback to 120 Minutes on MTV way back when.
And I considered Carson an emissary of evil way back when he was on MTV flacking for the boy bands and the metal meatheads. He has actually turned out to be a decent guy. Where else are you going to see Bad Religion, Ben Harper, and the like on TV??????
Cannot fathom how this show got renewed AGAIN…
Carson may have made his name on MTV’s TRL back in the day, but in a late-night network slot, he’s a marginally entertaining host at best – not funny, not interesting, not clever, not smart, and he crossed WGA picket lines during the strike…
Just about the only draw on his show is that he does feature more indie/up & coming bands in live performance – but the “show” content now consists of brief “wraparound” segments to segue into the concert/music clips – not much of a “talk show” if you ask me.
Is there something/anything more interesting or entertaining that the network can fill this slot?
I truly don’t get why/how Carson Daly still has a job on network TV.
Next?!
Carson will perhaps step into Jimmy Fallon’s late night shoes when Fallon takes over for Jay in 2012. N.Y. Post reporting that Leno’s Tonight is losing money hand over fist due to sub-par ratings and bloated production budget.
Carson better get comfortable in that case, ‘cuz I don’t see Jimmy Fallon taking over the Tonight Show in this lifetime.
This thing is still on the air? I had no idea.
I wanna know what Carson “has” only past, present and future NBC execs that his show keeps getting renewed. C’mon, Carson, let us in on it.
Of course it’s renewed, it’s a no-brainer. I mean, what’s each episode cost to produce, a buck? A buck fifty?
Chris, the ironic thing is that the person responsible for the show’s facelift (and subsequent higher ratings) was fired when the new director arrived. Ahh, Hollywood.
I hate to say it, but the show is actually very good.
It’s a shame what a buck fifty can buy these days.
Carson Daly’s “Last Call” has gone from a promising show with a young, up-and-coming host to a non-promising show with an old, going nowhere host.
Imagine what NBC could do if they actually used this slot to try and showcase promising writers and new talent (heck, why not give the winners of the network’s very own ‘Last Comic Standing’ rotating host cameos?)
Instead this show is like a dusty 1990s ‘Naughty by Nature’ cassette tape in the bottom of the discount bin at Tower Records.
Wait, is there even still a Tower Records?
Damn, I was hoping Craig Wilborn could get that spot!
God Bless Carson, but for the love of Halle Berry, he must have some pictures of some suit with a horse.
I don’t know how he does it.
Hey, MazelTov!
It’s not really that great currently, but they do have far more interesting guests and performances. Therefore, it’s definitely more vital now. Keep it up!
What, wait? That is still on?
It’s often TV’s best kept secret that indie music’s best acts first get their shot on Carson. He’s often a punchline (and truthfully, his persona deserves it), but the show’s saving grace has been its knack for booking talent. Credit where credit’s due: it delivers the goods when it comes to music.
The thing is, the show’s on at 12:35am. Who’s up watching at that hour? Most-likely college students. Older people don’t watch it (still tasting the icky “burnt toast” flavor of his launch) but if they’ve redefined it and are adding music and a “flavor” that younger people respond to, then it’s a sound investment it seems.
As for Fallon taking over “Tonight”?
I can’t see that happening.
If Conan failed there after 17 years handling “Late Night” (regardless of NBC’s sabotage) there’s no way Fallon’s going to grab hold after only 3 years (in 2012).
And NBC won’t want to face another failure like that.
Fallon’s fun, but he hasn’t mastered the “Interview Factor” yet.
Sorry…I meant 1:35am. NOT 12:35am.
“I am glad Stewart is coming back because he is incredibly smart and he owes me 35 dollars.” …Exactly why they’re not making Carson do comedy anymore.
D.L. Hughley was more amusing on CNN and they took him off after six months. Carson is as dry as a turkey bone after a Thanksgiving meal. …Infomercial hosts are more interesting.
It’s funny how all the people seem to hate him haven’t really watched the show in years, when it was god-awful. It’s a no-brainer to re-sign the show. I mean what else are they going to put on at that hour? What? move poker after dark up a half hour? It’s cheap to produce, showcases a lot of indie bands, and appears to be made on no budget.
come on people, seriously, what do you want on at 1:30, look at it’s competition- in NY there’s something called “comics unleashed” on cbs, oprah rerun on ABC, and king of the hill on Fox….
This was a no brainer since the bars & tone generator is in the shop for repair
they, actuall(in there right minds) h HAVE A talk show on at around 1.00 in the morning(night shift worker here) i cant seem too understand why somebody would be out there actually blabbing actually too themselves at that time of the moring who in the hell cares who is going on on at that time of morning?? they actually pay this guy/staff for something nobody listens too?? hell its tyhere money what a waste/ why not just run reruns of the twilight zone or i dream of jeanniee/
