EXCLUSIVE: Neil Marshall, whose period action film Centurion opens today, has been set to direct Underground, a David Cohen-scripted horror thriller set in the world of gourmet underground supper clubs. Now, considering the cannibalism that Marshall featured in his post-apocalyptic film Doomsday, who knows what he’s putting on the menu? I asked the producers for clarity and was told the protagonist is an ambitious young chef who ventures into the terrifying underbelly of extreme cuisine. The film’s produced by Taka Ichise and Erin Eggers of Ozla Pictures, along with Cohen and Jeremy Platt. ICM, which reps Marshall and Cohen and just signed Ozla Pictures, is packaging the film. Marshall’s managed by Principato Young, Cohen by Generate.

“the terrifying underbelly of extreme cuisine”.
holy crap, that is the funniest thing I’ve read all week!
you’re sure this isn’t a comedy?
Love Cohen’s writing. Even though I’m a tad squeamish, I deal with it to read his stuff. Can’t wait to see it. Any projected release date?
Does Neil Marshall have agents or a manager? Are they alive? Doomsday killed any good will Marshall had after The Descent, and Centurion was an ill-advised project that unsurprisingly went straight to VOD. Now we have Underground, which is a pretty terrible, unimaginative cannibalism movie with no audience. And the Wachowski’s did it better with Carnivore.
Centurion did not go straight to VOD. It was rolled out early on VOD but comes out today in theaters. Magnolia releasing. Not sure about elsewhere but it’s playing at the Nuart in LA.
@Orion: Are you posting this from the future? You must be since you know that Carnivore is better then the movie that has not been made yet.
Am I one of the few that absolutely loved Doomsday? I was thoroughly entertained…awesome. I can’t wait to see Centurion and Underground? Bring it on. Marshall haters – go elsewhere…
Yeah, I think you probably are, and I say this as someone who worked on that movie. Great concept, great art direction, murdered by bad casting, poor direction and terrible editing.
Marshall has absolutely no talent whatsoever. It’s astonishing that he continues to get work. Especially considering the financial problems Doomsday had.
This sounds delicious (pun intended). Sign me up!
“The terrifying underbelly of extreme cuisine”? What if the chef’s special is terrifying underbelly?
The club is underground for using salt and trans-fat in New York City.
Wow Furious, that was quite the witty post! THANK YOU! So happy to be blessed with your world views and snarky wit once again. I’ll surely sleep better at night knowing YOU’RE back…
Didn’t this guy disappear? I am by no means Mr. Hollywood, but this dude seriously needs to disappear.
Open letter to Mr. Furious D: Dear Furious…PLEASE STICK TO YOUR OWN WEBSITE!!! This is Nikke’s domain! Stop making it less cool!!
Already been done. “The Freshman”, 1990. Brando. Broderick. Brilliant. Komodo Dragon on the menu – terrifying!
I like everything Neil Marshall does…even the ill advised Doomsday was fun at times. I am excited to see what he can do with food.
I read a David Cohen script recently that I loved! Great writer, so I have high hopes for this. It’s also nice to see Marshall returning to a smaller budget idea a la “The Descent” which was stellar.
Can’t wait for this one. Marshall’s gonna crush it like garlic.
Marshall doesn’t have much of a career anymore. Doomsday broke Rogue into bits and pieces. What a mess that film was. Surprised any of those execs got hired elsewhere. Guess no one that greenlit the film had seen a movie prior to 1991 will all the borrowed elements.
Centurion…I got about 23 minutes into it and changed the channel. His writing is like a kid with ADD. Nonsensical and boring. Why in the world does he continue to cast his wife in these movies? His fanboy cred is gone. They’ve all matured and gotten married.
And I’m sure they’ll figure out some way to get fu**ing zombies in there!
I have read UNDERGROUND and the writing is phenomenal and one of the best scripts I’ve read in. It’s super creepy and wildly visual. With Marshall behind the camera and those words to work with this movie could be a huge hit. And besides, who doesn’t want to hang with high end cannibals for a few hours? It’s movie magic at it’s best!
Underground is too generic a title. How about just calling it “Supper Club” and using the Fight Club font with a bloody human limb on a dish as the poster. DVDs = sold.
Of course, we are all just assuming this movie has cannibalism in it and it isn’t just a movie about people eating live monkey brains or panda meat.
Sounds a lot like Hostel: Part 2 with cannibalism, what with the rich businessmen angle. I can imagine a similar bidding war scene in this except that instead of torturing the person up for bid, they eat him or her.
Watched my cat eat a squirrel once,- my god! If you’r going to think outside of the t.v. dinner box in an effort to give the audience something different, that carries with it the risk that you’r movie will bomb. If that happen’s get some more money and make another movie. Creativity isn’t always “safe”, if you want “safe” become a tax collector.
Sounds like a Press Release to raise money!
Hard to believe Marshall is seriously trying to resurrect his career on the back of an unknown writer with producer Taka Ichise who threw in the towel years ago with the likes of Grudge 2,3 and now 4,5 …
Since this picture never gets made I won’t hold my breath waiting for it.
If you hold your breath long enough you may be the main course. Or at least a bitter appetizer served with angry sauce.
