2ND UPDATE: Days after withdrawing from the Millennium Films drama Trespass just two weeks before production, Nicolas Cage has had a change of heart. I’m told that Cage’s CAA reps have informed the production that Cage will star in the Joel Schumacher-directed movie, after all. He’s actually come full circle: after originally signing on to team with Nicole Kidman as a kidnapped married couple, Cage recently shifted and took the role of the head kidnapper. He’s returning in the husband role, insiders tell me. Millennium has pushed its start date from August 16 to August 30 anyway, but the entire production is breathing a cautious sigh of relief after Millennium was about to begin trying to recast. It wasn’t immediately clear why Cage changed his mind. I think that the uncertainty over which character to play, coupled with the arduous promotional campaign on The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, left him fried. But dropping out of a movie so close to the start date is a lousy thing to do, particularly when he would be doing it to a financier he works with regularly (Avi Lerner has backed Wicker Man, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call–New Orleans and Drive Angry) and a director he has a relationship with from their previous collaboration 8MM. Cage had some time to think on his vacation in the Bahamas, and decided to do the right thing.
PREVIOUS UPDATE FROM LAST NIGHT: Insiders say that Nicolas Cage is not coming back. Millennium will forge ahead, intent on keeping its start date. That is pending the casting of a suitable replacement. Stay tuned.
EXCLUSIVE: The Sorcerer’s Apprentice star Nicolas Cage has pulled a disappearing act on Trespass, the Millennium Films drama that is just two weeks away from an August production start in Louisiana.
I’m told that Cage abruptly backed out of the film late last week and then left on vacation—apparently to the Bahamas. Will he change his mind? Was he just burnt out after working non-stop and then completing a global junket for Sorcerer’s Apprentice? I’m told nobody can reach him to find out. At the moment, Avi Lerner, who picked up the project after Overture Films dropped it, doesn’t know whether or not he has a movie.
Cage had been locked into a $7 million deal–but it was not pay or play yet—to costar with Nicole Kidman in the Schumacher-directed drama. She plays half of a married couple taken hostage by thieves looking for an easy payday.
Cage at first was going to play the husband, but within the last two weeks he switched and instead decided to play the leader of the kidnappers. Millennium offered the husband role to Liev Schreiber (he hasn’t accepted yet).
While Cage could have a change of heart, Lerner is scrambling to to find an available star with a bag packed and the muscle to justify a $35 million budget. The alternative is to postpone or scrap the project, which would probably lead to a lawsuit.
Cage has been a steady performer for Lerner, starring in Wicker Man, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans and the upcoming Drive Angry. Some feel that Cage may just be burned out from working on so many movies, and being the centerpiece of a long Disney movie launch campaign. He also has had the stress of paying $14 million in back taxes to the IRS, which might explain his prolific work pace.
But there are plenty of people on the production who will have problems of their own if a job they counted on falls through.
“It sucks for everybody who was planning to go to work on the picture,” said an insider.

I think it’s finally time for a “Raising Arizona” sequel.
I’m still waiting on The Wicker Man II: Revenge of the Twin
I hear the script’s done, but the suits are having doubts about the ending. A burning gymnasium full of women just doesn’t cut the mustard.
Hard working sitting around a mobile home. What a jerk!
Nic Cage just wouldn’t “walk out” on a project. There is probably some sort of ‘out clause’ in his contract that we are not familiar with. Cage is a professional. He knows the impact that leaving a production just two weeks away from shooting has.
Let’s see the contract and I’ll be happy to find the ‘out clause’ that Cage has taken advantage of.
would hate to see the studio that is spending the money to make the film wind up losing the cash and no doubt have to file a breach of contract suit against cage for doing a vanishing act.
I say the makers of the film should THANK Cage for backing out because Cage doesn’t have box office draw anymore. He’s just “OK”—not a hot ptospect at all. They should get someone else with equal drawing power to play that part—Nick Kidman can NOT do it alone!
“I’m told that nobody can reach him…”
I’m sorry, but that is the LAMEST and FAKEST excuse I have ever heard. CAA can (and probably already has) reach him. They probably just don’t have an answer/explanation that Avi would want to hear so they’re playing the “we can’t reach him” game until they can convince Nic to come around to an acceptable solution. Meanwhile, pressure mounts on Avi to maybe up the offer?
Nic Cage is one of the very few who still takes chances. Still reads scripts. Still believes that great can come from anywhere.
Good job Nic. Whatever the reason, I believe in you.
Thank you.
It must be a cold, dark, solitary place where you stand.
But seriously, I used to like Nic Cage, but the guy has not done anything of worth lately and he seems to just do it for the paycheck.
The fact that they put Cage and Kidman together and expected it to do well shows the filmmakers are rather clueless from the start. They are NOT marketable stars anymore. Good grief why are people in Hollywood so disconnected from their own audiences?! JLo on Idol, Cage & Kidman leading a film as if this is ten years ago, Jesus Christ, wake up the movie would have bombed either way.
Which is why you should stop wasting your time here and go run a studio – or better yet build one and finance it.
You’re wrong about that, Nic Cage is one of very few male American actors who can still generate substantial enough foreign presales to move a project into production. I know, it’s hard to believe, but it’s true. That may change because of overexposure over the next twelve months, but it is still the case.
Chances are that Avi failed to wire payment on time, so Nic on stand-by in case Avi comes through.
Maybe you should check your facts before posting comments that border on libel. How the hell would you know what Millenium is doing?
Your use of the term “locked” is interesting here … and more than a bit ironic since you’re talking about Nicolas “Gone in Sixty Seconds” Cage.
While I’m not at all familiar with any of the details (other than those you’ve provided), if there was still enough wiggle room for Nick to change roles, it doesn’t sound like he (let alone the rest of the cast) was even loosely roped in, let alone locked into the project.
p.s. Have you been to Louisiana in August?
Louisiana…
in August,
Hot August Nights…in Louisiana (???!!!) = “SULTRY!!!”
def: all hot, soggy, steamy & SWEATY!!!
Spoken like an out of work film person from California
He’s proving that his vanishing skills learned from Sorcerer’s Apprentice was not just an act!!
hahaha yes……Cage earned his sorcerer diploma
He probably realized that nothing good comes out of Millennium/Lerner. From the tremendous disasters “Rambo” (the new one) to “Rightous Kill”… Cage knows first hand that NuImage/Millennium/Avi is a chop shop… Look at the numbers for his version of The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans… Avi destroys films and Cage’s career can’t take another Millennium disaster
Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call — New Orleans was in profit before it ever started shooting.
Exactly. You nailed it. When Overture dumped it and Millenium picked it up, Nic was like, :”Oh no, not another Avi Disaster.”
How exactly was RAMBO a “tremendous disaster?”
113ww on 50mil budget? Last week even saw its second BD issue with a new director cut.
Hogwash. It did great. Better than I’m sure anyone was expecting.
“Rambo” did well.
With a total gross of $152,209,706 (Including DVD sales) on a $50 million budget, how is that a disaster?
Just because it isn’t your cup of tea, doesn’t mean you can make up nonsense to give your rants some credibility.
Maybe he went island shopping.
Wake up Cage, don’t bite the hand that feeds you.
Trespass is a good script. Disney made a big error. Get to work and don’t be a problem for those who prebought your film and believed in you.
Hollywood doesn’t forget.
Um, Bad Lieutenant was going to have niche appeal, anyway. And it’s Cage’s last tolerable project in a long time, so it’s his loss.
Thank God he passed on this! Now maybe someone we actually want to see will star in this! All I know is I do not want to see Nic Cage in ANYTHING.
Wonderful! Now maybe someone we actually want to see will star in this! All I know is I do not want to see Nic Cage in ANYTHING.
The comment about Louisiana in August . . . Satin avoids that place in July, August, & September. Filming there in those months is a hazard to your health.
You mean… “SATAN” avoids that place in July, August, & September.
That’s because he’s breathing on Atlanta at the moment!
Like I said, just damn “SULTRY” (that’s how Southerners describe it)…and not in a good way!
sounds like another out of work Cali. boy
No kidding – satin doesn’t breathe at all.
Douche.
I hear that Kidmans new movie, Rabbit Hole ,is Oscar Winning maerial It will be part of the Toronto Film Festival in Sept. I hope she wins and all the others in the film that have been praised including the director,John Cameon Mitchell. Maybe Cage should reconsider!
“Good grief why are people in Hollywood so disconnected from their own audiences?! ”

Hear, hear.
To all the people who continue to speak badly about filming in Louisiana, It’s simple , just stay home . We will be O.K. without you !!!!
I worked with Nic Cage on Drive Angry as Cougar in bar and in Hungry Rabbit Jumps as a hotel guest. He had slaYs been a dedicated actor deep in his characes and has entertained us all. Soon as a person has probls people abandon them. Actors are human if you not in the business you won’t understand the pressures. We may have to wait and hear his side. There’s always two sides to every story. I love you always Nicolas Cage.
I agree Nicolas Cage has been around for years, and he has come along way. Times has changed people have changed and there are new actors rising every year. I am 100% behind him through good and bad and that truely shows someones character. He has always been a straight shooter never in these boring tablods for random stupidity. So take a step back and look at what he has accomplished rather than what you believe he should be doing to satisfy all you closed minded ppl.
Hollywood is a cruel place – unless you’re Nicole Kidman. She has had bomb after bomb, I have never met anyone who so much as enjoys watching her on screen, and yet she continues to get work. Why would anyone cast her in a movie? And Cage is hardly hot right now himself. Also, look at films like ‘Knight and Day’ and ‘The Killers.’ This sounds like a bad idea.
Nicole might be choosing bad movies lately, but her fans still adore her. And she has millions. She’s got the chops – she just needs the right. As for Cage, we’ve seen all the tricks that pony has to offer, and were tired of it long, long ago. This team-up was a bad idea from the beginning. Glad he walked.
“Why would anyone cast her in a movie? ”
Because she a talented actress and millions of people still want to see her acting except you and your little club of friends, uh?
Millennium deserves to shut down. I feel bad for the crew, but I believe there is much more to this story. Perhaps if Avi Lerner finds integrity and a descent work ethic, Millennium will finally make good films(?). That would require him and Millennium to pull their head out of their a$s!
Whatever the reason that Nic has dropped out of the movie, I’m sure it’ s a good one. He is an utter professional. Good luck Nic.
