Ray Richmond is contributing to Deadline’s Emmy coverage.
EXCLUSIVE: Is American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe unhappy with who’s going to be the show’s next two judges? It sure sounds that way. I caught up with him at the 8th annual BAFTA/LA Tea Party in Century City today and asked him to confirm that Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez will replace Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres. “I must say, I really do love Elton John. He’s a huge favorite of mine,” Lythgoe replied to me. The producer added that Elton’s packed schedule is “always the problem”.
Then Lythgoe revealed what strategy Idol is using on Elton to convince him to clear it and come on the show. “It depends on whether [he] wants to give back.” As Deadline Hollywood has been continually reporting, everybody connected to Idol has made no secret of the fact that Elton John has always been their first choice to replace Cowell. But no deal is in the offing not just because of the musician’s touring commitments but also because of his astronomical asking price. Which is why the musician’s UK publicist Gary Farrow told Deadline London Editor Tim Adler in late July that “There’s more chance of me fucking you than Elton being on U.S. Idol.” But it’s clear Lythgoe is still trying.
Lythgoe, who left Idol and then recently returned, also blamed Simon Cowell for Ellen DeGeneres not returning as an Idol judge next season. “I’m sorry she’s gone, to be honest with you,” he told me, “because I think there’s a place for Ellen DeGeneres on American Idol. And that is being the voice of the people. She wasn’t given a fair opportunity to serve that function. Ellen was constantly apologizing and overwhelmed, I think, by Simon. There was no chemistry between she and the rest of the panel, but to my mind it wasn’t her fault. She was misused. And I’m sorry that turned out to be the case.” DeGeneres and her reps asked to be let out of her Idol contract which still had a year to go.

If they are supposedly working with Elton John — why are his reps vehemently denying it. And I just wonder if this is just yet another cover up over Ellen leaving, I mean if Simon was the problem — and I doubt that since he went on her show and said that he liked her — Simon is no longer on the show anymore. I just think they are treating kara pretty badly and it’s funny that I actually like her now and think she would be the only voice of reason and constructive criticism. This show doesn’t need to be revamped this much — Simon leaving is already a huge change, why do they need to blow it all up and Randy gets left? I say bring back Paula or keep Kara.
The judges must be as entertaining as the contestants. So far, it appears the judges will be anything but. The key to the ‘voting dilemma” might be to vote people “off” rather than to vote for who stays. THAT would be interesting and effective.
Brett Michaels would be my choice.
Elton John? Not quite sure what they think HE brings to the table. I also heard that they were talking to Christopher Hoch from Milktoast Intolerant. Not sure if it is true but THAT would be entertaining!
I’d take Elton over the rumored Lopez, Tyler, and Carey anyday.
Once again, though, the problem with Idol isn’t the judges. It’s the lack of talent of the contestants. When the show is simply a contest for “the cutest boy” to win (which it seems like it will forever be now unless they institute some voting limit a la Dancing with the Stars), there’s no point in anyone over the age of 14 watching it at all. (Last year, three of the most talented contestants of the season were sent packing in the final round before the Top 12…all because they weren’t appealing to the tween crowd.)
Elton may get me to tune in again, but I was so turned off by last year’s winner (and lack of talent overall) that it’s going to take something pretty big to get me to put this back in my line-up.
“It depends on whether [he] wants to give back.”
????
What the fresh pine scented hell does he mean by that?
Someone pls tell me Lythgoe isn’t implying AI or Fox is some sort of charity that Elton should contribute to.
THAT would take the freakin’ cake!
Give back to his profession – the young and up-and-coming. Duh!
I agree. Sounds like he’s trying to make Elton feel guilty.
“The voice of the people”? Idol doesn’t need a voice for the people! The people sitting at home know what they think. They don’t need someone there to confirm or deny that. We need credible people with music experience – both on the business and performing sides. They could really teach people something if they were honest and not just trying to get out the next quip. Randy could provide great feedback if he could manage to put three coherent sentences together. Tyler, Lopez, Carey and whoever else will be just as much of a farce. This show is dying. I wish you the best at turning it around, Nigel.
Thank you. Ellen was NEVER the “voice of the people”, yet, a disturbing number of people continue to buy into this ridiculous justification for why Fox made the ludicrous mistake of hiring her to replace Paula. And as you said, the “people” speak for themselves, by voting. Nigel is clueless if he thinks Ellen was in any way, shape, or form good for the show.
Nigel also keeps saying he doesn’t want another Brit in Simon’s seat, yet, he reportedly continues to chase after Elton John, who has made it clear in no uncertain terms that he is NOT INTERESTED. Elton would also be a lame substitute for Simon. ANYONE would be a lame substitute for Simon. Simon is irreplaceable, and that is why the producers have had since January to find a replacement, and a few weeks before the judges’ auditions, they still haven’t found one.
I wanna see Billy Idol as a judge on next season of Idol!
I totally agree with Jeff’s comment. Idol has changed, and the winner is now based upon who is the “cutest” or has the most “aw shucks” factor for the tweens. There is some FANTASTIC talent out there, but we’re not seeing it because of the way the show is set up. A gaggle of texting tweens will win every time over adults who only vote once for their favorite person.
I just hope that whoever is chosen to replace Simon will be just as candid with their comments about the performances. As much as I think Simon is an arrogant jerk, I will admit that he was spot-on 99% of the time with his comments and always said exactly what I was thinking. They also need a “nice” person on the panel, and I’ve missed Paula ever since she left. Ellen was nice, but she was very out of her element and was obviously feeling awkward and uncomfortable being up there on camera doing her critique of the performances. And right when I got used to Kara and understood where she is coming from with her comments, poof, she’s gone! Nigel—you’ve certainly got your work cut out for you. Good luck—-don’t let Idol slip away into oblivion!
Elton would actually get me to watch the show.
He has actual mega-talent and would make Simon look civil.
Yo, peeps … y’all sseem to be forgetting that AI is supposed to be a TALENT Show … it’s the contestants, stupid!
Simon was an aberration from the usual talent judge personna. He was all about Simon, from day one to the very end. Too bad his judgment of talent really isn’t that good.
Ellen used the same joke lines over and over … she’s a comedian, not a musical talent.
Kara? I still don’t know who or why she was there … and of course, Randy – who actually left the dawgs out – is beyond words -he clearly has musical talent and ability, although he never really was correct in his judgment other than when the contestant was terrible.
AI’s producers have tried to make the show into a variety show by bringing in non-contestants … that’s NOT why we the public watched the show! Keep it up and AI will be out of business soon.
Wait a minute, didn’t Elton ruin his reputation with the leftist entertainment industry by playing at Rush Limbaugh’s wedding?
Bad choice, period.
Nigel needs to make up his mind. If he believes the emphasis should be on the contestants, why would he want such a high profile judge as Elton John? Also, Ellen wasn’t a popular choice with the viewers. Even though viewers may like Ellen as a talk show host, they didn’t appreciated her wasting time trying to judge singing talent. If he just wants a voice of the people, I’m available and I could really use the job..unlike Ellen. P.s. Please get rid of Kara. She’s fake and an utter turn off to many fans.
Elton John is known for throwing temper tantrums and walking off stage. The producers would have to be out of their minds to want him as a judge.
Just let the show die, it’s over. Get it?
David Geffen, David Foster, Jon Bon Jovi , would all be more professional choices for next AI judges, however most important thing is to get better talent chosen for the show. Simply put, recent finalists just don’t have it. Howard Stern would probably attract the most viewers.
Please NOT Elton John. I will not watch if you try to replace Simon with that person.
I quit reading the article when I came to the f-word. Not really necessary.
Idol is going to fade in the distance. The real question is how will they go out? They should look at the Seinfeld endings. Nothing in TV is forever. They have been wonderful so far. Was a great run. Now, they must face reality and work on their “exit strategy”.
The show will fail miserably without Simon, so whoever replaces whoever is a moot point. Simon can’t be replaced….he IS American Idol.
It’s time this 21st Century Gong Show was canceled anyway.
No joke. I would love to see Stevie Wonder as a judge. What a unique perspective he would have.
It was embarrassing to watch the contestants have to deal with Ellen’s comic spotlight and Kara’s young boy cravings.
Problem with idol: Lost Credibility.
Talent is not measured by how many tweens will vote for you.
Judges who know nothing about music cannot judge. Have Ellen judge Last Standing Comic That’s more appropriate. Kara is a cougar and that was awkward and a bit gross.
Ellen is not the voice of the “people.” The people are their own voice.
Randy got lost in the crowd because of these antics, which was a shame.
The contestants got TOTALLY lost.
Take some hints from DWTS. The judges KNOW dancing. The dancers actually improve and the winner can really dance.
The only sentence in here that caught my attention was: “There’s more chance of me fucking you than Elton being on U.S. Idol.” Gotta love the brits and their excellent modes of speech.
Other than that… This is just more evidence that American Idol is on the decline. Nothing really interesting or new about that.
Didn’t Elton John call the AI voters racist when Fantasia and Jennifer Hudson were in the bottom 3?
EJ would be excellent, a big audience draw and very credible judge. They should go for producer David Foster, who has huge smarts and success and some recent exposure from his PBS special. Above all, the judges should be well-spoken. The same cliched criticisms and observations over and over grow very stale.

Retreads… People would rather see an entertaining nobody than a retread.
Simon Cowell is going to destroy Idol with Xfactor, no age limits and groups means talent instead of teenage losers who don’t know anything about music.
Idol is a kids show at best. Why are they casting old people as judges?
Would you want to be selected by someone’s kid that can’t help you financially…?
I think not… Kids do not make a star… Money does…
Howard Stern is the only one who can save the show. They should also bring back the nut-job Paula Abdul. Watching her babble incoherently was very entertaining. Ellen and Kara were utterly worthless as judges.
howard stern is a has been
Howard Stern? He is a lost and disgraceful man – definitely not suitable for what should be a family friendly show.
sonofelvis is exactly right. Howard Stern would shake things up love him or hate him. He would bring honesty and humor to the show.
Ellen and Kara were boring to say the least. Howard, Paula and I hate to say Randy would be the best for now and Howard is available.
Come up with the bucks he won’t come cheap.
Howard Stern is a total nut job.
