Ray Richmond is contributing to Deadline’s Emmy coverage.
EXCLUSIVE: Is American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe unhappy with who’s going to be the show’s next two judges? It sure sounds that way. I caught up with him at the 8th annual BAFTA/LA Tea Party in Century City today and asked him to confirm that Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez will replace Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres. “I must say, I really do love Elton John. He’s a huge favorite of mine,” Lythgoe replied to me. The producer added that Elton’s packed schedule is “always the problem”.
Then Lythgoe revealed what strategy Idol is using on Elton to convince him to clear it and come on the show. “It depends on whether [he] wants to give back.” As Deadline Hollywood has been continually reporting, everybody connected to Idol has made no secret of the fact that Elton John has always been their first choice to replace Cowell. But no deal is in the offing not just because of the musician’s touring commitments but also because of his astronomical asking price. Which is why the musician’s UK publicist Gary Farrow told Deadline London Editor Tim Adler in late July that “There’s more chance of me fucking you than Elton being on U.S. Idol.” But it’s clear Lythgoe is still trying.
Lythgoe, who left Idol and then recently returned, also blamed Simon Cowell for Ellen DeGeneres not returning as an Idol judge next season. “I’m sorry she’s gone, to be honest with you,” he told me, “because I think there’s a place for Ellen DeGeneres on American Idol. And that is being the voice of the people. She wasn’t given a fair opportunity to serve that function. Ellen was constantly apologizing and overwhelmed, I think, by Simon. There was no chemistry between she and the rest of the panel, but to my mind it wasn’t her fault. She was misused. And I’m sorry that turned out to be the case.” DeGeneres and her reps asked to be let out of her Idol contract which still had a year to go.
New ‘Man Of Steel’ Television Spot #6

I actually remember when the show first started, and what made it different was that the judges were relatively unknown – and that made it fresh and interesting.
‘American Idol’ should go back and do it all over again. Find three new, unknown music biz professionals and let us learn to love/hate them once more. Opting for over-wrought celeb singers will only drag the show further down.
Don’t fix what isn’t broken.
Shhh…
Don’t bother them– They’re too busy breaking it!
The judges were relatively unknown? Because you don’t know enough about the music industry to know Randy Jackson’s been around for ages? Because you slept through the late 80s/early 90s when Abdul was a highly successful pop artist? Out of the three, Simon was the only one with little exposure to the mainstream culture. The show was a HUGE hit in the beginning because of the concept itself. Sure, the judges played a role in that but, until then, nothing had ever existed on U.S. television with such potentially, long lasting repercussions for the contestants on the show. Savvy indeed.
Paula Abdul was pretty well known, the rest were a little unheard of. You need one celebrity nice type, pretty sweet, female and two industry backstage, one good cop, one bad cop.
Paula Abdul was a superstar..and Simon was famous over in the UK. Randy was the unknown judge!
There is one safe bet: the replacement will be a gay person. The gay idol exec of 19 recently attempted to get Adam Lambert, then he got Ellen then went after George Michael, and now Elton John. Bad move
Elton John is great. I didn’t appreciate his music so much when i was young, mostly because i was into much heavier stuff back then. I must say Elton should not diminish himself as part of this show. His place is as the artist. If they want his input then give him the opportunity for an occasional sound bite when the stakes become high. For that matter some non judge panel input from various artist could be a good thing.
Elton is too huge of a star. It will NEVER happen. Sonofelvis was right. Kara and Degeneres were poor choices. Bring back the nutty, addicted Abdul for laughs and get a new “Bitch” to take Simon’s place. Elton would never do that.
I didn’t watch last season because of Ellen. If Elton joins the show, I will not watch this season either.
What about Jaymes Foster? She knows the music biz and was not afraid to be harsh when she was a judge on Popstars. They definitely need to find people with behind the scenes experience and stop focusing on big names like J. Lo and Steven Tyler who could end up being like Ellen Degeneres with nothing useful to offer.
I think they should fire Randy Jackson. His anemic reviews and very limited vocabulary are of little use to the show. He uses the same words over and over again and it’s getting old. And he shouldn’t call the female contestants(or the male ones, for that matter) “dude”. He talks like a burnout.
Elton…owes A.I? That’s rich…
Take this as official word…E.J will NOT be a judge. Not this season…not the next. His schedule and wake-up times will not allow it.
Adler…call about the ‘fucking’. We can make this happen…

I think since Paula and Simon are both gone, IT JUST ISN’T THE SAME, THEY MADE THE SHOW IN MY BOOK.
I think Stern would be great. He would tell it like it is but probably have to be censored all the time! Elton would bring music
credibility and with his knowledge, education and experience, he could offer some genuine constructive criticisms to the show. He’s big on giving back to causes, so if he could be convinced the charity’s like HIV/AIDS would benefit greatly, I would think he’d feel compelled to contribute, at least for a year, so I would try hard to lock him in there.
They should have a sharp tongued comedian who is unafraid (not like Ellen) and will not try and sugar coat it.
Gene Simmons of KISS would be fine.
May I suggest columnist Mark Steyn? He has an encyclopedic knowledge of the pop-culture songbook, he is astonishingly entertaining, comes from a broadcasting background, and knows what the heck he’s talking about– his opinion is very nearly always informed. And, he’s young (ish), compared to say, dear old Elton
IDOL is dead in the water, sorry Ellen you could,nt cut the cake, and facial serious looks appeared to show you were very nervous, out of character.
The only reason to watch American Idol is at the beginning of the season. Morbid curiousity makes it highly entertaining to watch hopeless losers perform horribly, get reamed by the judges, and then either beg for another chance or get pissed off and start yelling at the judges.
I suppose there have been a good number of reasonable talents during the finals, but a good singer doesn’t necessarily make for entertaining television.
Who am I kidding? I haven’t seen an episode in several years. When I did see it, it was only because I was waiting for 24 to come on…
There’s only one person judging that I’d want in the AI chair, and he’s not a mega star. I think he’s got another gig (as a judge) we’ll see this fall.
Ben Folds on The Sing Off was downright brilliant as a judge, and I hope he returns when the show comes back this fall. It’s a shame that American Idol is going for the “star judge” route, much like how prime time game/reality shows ended up doing with the “star contestant” route.
American Idle is for idiots. Please go read Neil Postman’s “Amusing Ourselves to Death”.
J-Lo? Steven Tyler? One’s too stupid to be able to actually form sentences, and the other’s too burned out.
At least Elton has brain enough to form an opinion.
I say this show is on its last legs. It’s losing steam, and those rides down don’t often last long. Elton’s the only one I see who might be able to bring it back.
The other names being bandied about — typical Hollywood retreads all — will just underscore the fact that the franchise has seen better, fresher, more creative days.
Can you say, Barry Manilow?
LOLOL!
Elton would be entertaining in more ways than one. Whatever his asking price, it would be worth it for Idol to restore its ratings. These other judges? Could care less for JLo – ok to look at, but don’t want to listen to her. Carey? C’mon! No thanks unless she shows up drunk. Tyler? Give me a break. That guy is so yesterday. Put Tyler’s picture next to the word prune in the illustrated dictionary.
That freak, Ellen Degeneres, dragged down Idol’s ratings. Sorry if that isn’t politically correct, but it’s the truth.
Signs of desperation trying for Elton John. Ellen was not right for the show. No music background or talent.
This show will be gone in two years without Simon
I’m glad Ellen’s gone. I stopped watching because they hired her. I think they only hired her because she’s gay. I really want to hear the opinions of judges who actually know music not ‘come to my house to hang pictures because you nailed it’. Really!!
Love Nigel – he has a good head on his shoulders… And Simon was a HUGE problem – he rarely said anything that was helpful and what a HUGE ego. He was clearly TANKING this past season on purpose so that his new show would have an advantage. He was constantly berating great performances and herolding on bad ones – so that he could “use it to his personal advantage and pocket
book”.
I will trust Nigel – he will straighten out the mess and I won’t be watching Simon’s new show.
Casey James was outstanding on last years AI show. He is KILLIN’ it on the tour and will be a huge star… WAIT and WATCH.,.. Simon didn’t even want him on the show – and did not want to ADMIT that he had talent the entire season. He has received RAVE reviews on the ENTIRE tour. Top performer of the SHOW every time….
Who wants to hear what “Simon says…” NOT ME… HEARD too much – could care less what he has to say – he is so off the mark most of the time….
Elton has an album coming out with Leon Russell in October- that is what he will be concentrating on- I think he also wants to be taken seriously again as a recording artist- going on Idol won’t do that. Elton is bitchy funny but I really don’t know why anyone thinks he would ever be that way to aspiring singers. He’s not like Simon in that respect, he is not going to be ugly to people. When they did ‘Elton John week’ in Season three, he did not sit in as a guest judge. Elton doesn’t need the money-
American Idol has become grossly out of touch with the American public. That is why its ratings are plummeting. It USED to be a wholesome family show, and that’s why everyone loved it. You could tune in with the whole family and live the dream. Those were the roots of the program and why it was in everyone’s hearts.
Lately it has been pushing a tawdry agenda, with off color jokes, blatant homosexual references, and a continual gay in your face affront. From Katy Perry to Adam Lambert, the show is less about discovering America’s next great talent, and more about slapping the audience with kink. People don’t feel comfortable watching it with their families anymore. That’s it, simple.
If they think Elton can replace Simon, they are further from the minds of the masses than is conceivable. Idol will waste so much money and find their ratings have dropped even lower. Say good-bye Idol, you started well but finished poorly.
