Oscar season officially begins September 1st. And already I hear Hollywood types everywhere discussing the films from Stieg Larsson book The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, they’re wondering aloud if breakout star Noomi Rapace could get an Academy Award for playing Lisbeth Salander. After all, Sweden’s Yellow Bird released the film back in 2009, and the other two pics in the trilogy were made for television and cut down for the big screen. I’ve now confirmed that she is eligible. Because Music Box Films released director Niels Arden Oplev’s Dragon Tattoo version in a Los Angeles County theater for a qualifying run this past March, thus making Rapace’s performance eligible. I’ve learned that Music Box Films is about to hire an Oscar publicist, probably Melody Korenbrot, to promote Noomi for a Best Actress nomination. That’s right, Best Actress. She’s already won the Swedish equivalency of that for the film. Her new agents at UTA and managers at Magnolia are comparing her to Marion Cotillard, who appeared in a small foreign film, came out of nowhere to be nominated and then win the Best Actress Academy Award, then landed big roles in major studio tentpoles. ”You can have that same journey. You speak English better than she does,” she’s been told.
These are the kinds of Hollywood success stories I love. “She is realizing a dream,” an insider tells me. Since arriving in town over the weekend, Rapace has been taking meetings with a slew of directors, producers, and studio production execs.” I’m told that, already, Warner Bros’ Greg Silverman wants her for Sherlock Holmes 2, and Paramount’s Marc Evans wants her for Mission Impossible 4. “If it’s not too far along,” one of my insiders explains. So Roomi will head home tomorrow for her 6-year-old son’s birthday on Saturday, then probably get on a plane and come back to Hollywood next week to meet again with Silverman and MI4‘s Brad Bird.
She’s also sat down with Brett Ratner who just wanted to meet her. Rapace told Ridley Scott (and Scot Free’s Michael Costigan) that she grew up on his films when she left home at 15. She also met with Brad Fischer for the Phoenix Pictures project The Last Voyage Of The Demeter, Jon Amiel on his latest (believed to be titled Masterwork), James McTeigue on The Raven, Tommy Wirkola on Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters, and McG on This Means War. For the latter, McG discussed this juicy villain role.
As an insider told me, “They’re originally meeting her expecting this hard-ass on a Harley wearing leather. But she’s nothing like Lisbeth. They’re shocked to find this unbelievably beautiful and sexy fresh-faced actress with a wonderful sense of humor. So now that’s opening doors for her. They go into the meeting to ask, ‘Do I have a villain? And they leave saying, ‘Do I have a great female lead?’”
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

She rocks! She’s the best thing in the “Tattoo” pics. Hopefully Hollywood won’t misuse her like they did Penelope Cruz for so long (read: stay away from Ratner & Bay!)
She should go for it, it was an outstanding performance.
Sad to say, though, the Best Female Lead Oscar is already sewn up . . . it’s going to Annette Benning, for The Kids Are All Right. Bet the house.
Definitely. Plus she was amazing in MOTHER AND CHILD. It’s her time.
Right movie, wrong performance. Julianne Moore had a much more complex, dramatic challenge that she brilliantly pulled off. Her ‘marriage is hard’ monologue toward the end was tough as nails. IMO, Benning played a stereotypical lesbian (short hair, aggressive). Moore was incredible!
I would LOVE to see her win the Oscar, she deserves it = she was phenomenal. I hope she’s picky with her next project and they better be dishing out the big $$ to her.
Hell yeah! Bring it on! Hollywood needs new blood fast. She looks fantastic, sounds great, moves with confidence and even though I didn’t like the movie all that much, I thought she was awesome in ‘Dragon Tatoo’. She brought the fire. I hope she gets all the success this town has to offer. A breath of fresh air.
Memo to casting agents: no more Victoria Secret Models, please.
Great news. She seems very talented. Still have to see the next two films!
Nikki, have you heard any Oscar Buzz for The Tourist, Jolie, or Depp since the film is now moved up to December 10th?
The “insider” her agent?
Still, fun to hear a genuine talent being offered good and interesting work.
just watch Girl with the Dragon Tattoo last night and I thought she was tremendous. I told friends that I thought she would get some run in H’wood very quickly, similar to Franke Potente after Run Lola Run (blow, bourne).
Hopefully her stint will last longer…
Excellent, she DESERVES Oscar-recognition AND a succesful US career. I would love to see her getting nominated but I’m slightly worried. These Cotillard-comparisons aren’t really accurate.
La Mome was pure Oscar-bait, very Academy-friendly (period piece ? check; biography ? check; beloved, iconic musical legend as the subject? check), while ‘Dragon Tattoo’ is a contemporary thriller/crime and it COULD be too dark and violent for the voters.
But I’m sure this Oscar publicist will look out for these slightly damaging factors. Good luck, Melody !
P.S. Due to the dark material I don’t think she could actually win BUT a nomination would be comletely awesome.
This woman is obviously a great actress, so why is she with UTA? UTA is the new Innovative. Unless she wants to end up in a TV show she should leave. Has anyone noticed that since UTA was designated as a B level agency that they keep dishing everything, and everything for press over the last month? Chris Day is doing an amazing job of reporting everything for the hurting ten perceneter. In this case I think the agent to this actress just sent Deadline the meeting schedule that the agency set for her while she was in town. Desperate times for a desperate agency. Come on UTA just merge already and fire some of your dead weight no client servicers.
A nomination would be great, as would an appearance on the red carpet.
Let everybody see that new talent exists.
hands down she is this years best actress- nobody will come close
She is 100% new and fresh for American audiences. Great work in those three films. She deserves any recognition that comes her way.
No offense to Rooney, but those are some BIG shoes to fill.
Wouldn’t that be the ultimate bitch-slap to Fincher and Hollywood. “No, no, step aside, we will now make the AMERICAN VERSION of these films starring OUR CHOICE – and then Noomi wins the Oscar, and the Hollywood versions just… die on the vine.
Hey Fincher – it’s been DONE.
God I fucking hate Hollywood
Noomi has said that she doesn’t want to play the part anymore, so she has stepped aside of her own accord.
I don’t think it’s right to knock Hollywood, they do make good movies. But! I do have to agree with this person to a certain extent. Why do a remake of something that is already perfect. I don’t think Noomi Rapace should be over-clouded, she did an amazing job and should take home the credit to Sweden. Sometimes it best to leave a good thing alone.
I’m not going to say that the movie in general was a masterpiece that any serious movie goer must see but but it sure as hell didn’t advertise a “one note performance” from its female lead.
Excellent comments by Phantom. I agree 100%. The fact is Noomi did an outstanding job in bringing the character of Salander to life in a way that’s completely faithful to how she’s portrayed in the Stieg Larsson books. That was her job and she performed it admirably. The fact that she is so totally different in her interviews is a testament to her ability as an actress. I’m excited to see what other interesting work she can do in the future and I hope she’s presented with many opportunities to tackle roles that are worthy of her talents. Watching her interviews you can see that she’s an actress who seeks to challenge herself and try new things.
Well, now, where does that leave Rooney Mara and Fincher’s remake? Unlike “Brothers”, the Danish original of which was a POS, where the US version made the mistake of being too faithful a rendition of, the Swedish “Dragon” films are great, and absolutely do not need to be replaced. Why aren’t US audiences smart enough to watch subtitles?
Whether you like the character of “Lisbeth” or not isn’t really the point of Noomi being an Oscar contender it’s the way she embodied Lisbeth. Noomi Rapace is nothing like Lisbeth in real life and that my friends is a true actor and I think anyone who knows anything about movies and theater and acting can see that. Noomi is the best actress I’ve seen in my life. She can out act anyone, and I wish I could see her older films but they are hard to find especially with english subtitles. Though I have found scenes from other films on youtube, a couple are “Du & Jag” and “Daisy Diamond” and her latest film “Beyond”. This girl can and does act her ass off. Regardless of if she gets one or not she deserves and Oscar.
“She’s also sat down with Brett Ratner who just wanted to meet her.”
Yuck…
Noomi has power that few in the business possess. And, she is best when highly challenged.
Let’s hope that the parties lucky enough to have her on a US production will push her to move several mountains while simultaneously carrying fine China and fluorescent tubes, and *not* try and waste her on obvious, easy mimicry.
On the other hand, something tells me she’s far too smart and substantial for such connerie. We shall indeed see.
As for Oscars…a bit soon for all that, right? Nominated, yeah, of course. But a win?
Let’s see what she finds herself against by year’s end. Although any remaining contender would have to be pretty damned amazing to top her.
the difference is la vie en rose opened in june and was in the theatres (coastal wise) until the end of the year. maybe this film opened too early. there are a lot more movies coming out this year. although too many at the moment look like they might suck.
hopefully she doesn’t speak english like stellan skarsgard. if she grew up on ridley scott movies, and she’s realtively young, i guess she was way into white squall and g.i. jane.
Wow. This is my first time hearing about this woman. Is she that good? To have just arrived in town and done a sweep of the studios and agencies for high concept and tentpole titles is quite a feat…
Nobody will come close? Annette Benning will win.
Good for her! Just stay away from Mission Impossible.
She was awesome in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I can’t wait to see her in something else.
Well the Hollywood big shots finally got off their fat asses and realized this woman is an amazing talent. This young lady probably has been knocking on doors for years. It takes a terrific movie she starred in Sweden and media hoopla casting for the American version for them to finally recognize her.
Jesus we are a narrow minded bunch with a American superiority complex.
Her performance was completely Oscar worthy..
