Oscar season officially begins September 1st. And already I hear Hollywood types everywhere discussing the films from Stieg Larsson book The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, they’re wondering aloud if breakout star Noomi Rapace could get an Academy Award for playing Lisbeth Salander. After all, Sweden’s Yellow Bird released the film back in 2009, and the other two pics in the trilogy were made for television and cut down for the big screen. I’ve now confirmed that she is eligible. Because Music Box Films released director Niels Arden Oplev’s Dragon Tattoo version in a Los Angeles County theater for a qualifying run this past March, thus making Rapace’s performance eligible. I’ve learned that Music Box Films is about to hire an Oscar publicist, probably Melody Korenbrot, to promote Noomi for a Best Actress nomination. That’s right, Best Actress. She’s already won the Swedish equivalency of that for the film. Her new agents at UTA and managers at Magnolia are comparing her to Marion Cotillard, who appeared in a small foreign film, came out of nowhere to be nominated and then win the Best Actress Academy Award, then landed big roles in major studio tentpoles. ”You can have that same journey. You speak English better than she does,” she’s been told.
These are the kinds of Hollywood success stories I love. “She is realizing a dream,” an insider tells me. Since arriving in town over the weekend, Rapace has been taking meetings with a slew of directors, producers, and studio production execs.” I’m told that, already, Warner Bros’ Greg Silverman wants her for Sherlock Holmes 2, and Paramount’s Marc Evans wants her for Mission Impossible 4. “If it’s not too far along,” one of my insiders explains. So Roomi will head home tomorrow for her 6-year-old son’s birthday on Saturday, then probably get on a plane and come back to Hollywood next week to meet again with Silverman and MI4‘s Brad Bird.
She’s also sat down with Brett Ratner who just wanted to meet her. Rapace told Ridley Scott (and Scot Free’s Michael Costigan) that she grew up on his films when she left home at 15. She also met with Brad Fischer for the Phoenix Pictures project The Last Voyage Of The Demeter, Jon Amiel on his latest (believed to be titled Masterwork), James McTeigue on The Raven, Tommy Wirkola on Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters, and McG on This Means War. For the latter, McG discussed this juicy villain role.
As an insider told me, “They’re originally meeting her expecting this hard-ass on a Harley wearing leather. But she’s nothing like Lisbeth. They’re shocked to find this unbelievably beautiful and sexy fresh-faced actress with a wonderful sense of humor. So now that’s opening doors for her. They go into the meeting to ask, ‘Do I have a villain? And they leave saying, ‘Do I have a great female lead?’”

Noomi was fantastic as Lisbeth and she deserves the Oscar…Benning was good but Noomi was better….These awards are subjective anyway, look at the best picture from last year! It was good but not great and yet it won…..
I’m happy for Noomi and believe she’ll stay grounded and avoid all the hollywood bs that can eat up an actors mind…
Lisbeth Salander/Noomi Rapace Rock!
ps: the Godfather was dark for it’s time too and yet it still won Best Film so Noomi stands a very good chance to grab the Best Actress Oscar if she is nominated.
“UTA is the new Innovative”,
Sounds like someone got fired recently. Take your frustrations elsewhere, especially if you consider Johnny Depp “B” caliber…
Anne Hathaway in “Love and Other Drugs” is a far more likely Oscar winner than this actress.
If I were Rapace, I wouldn’t touch MI4 with a bargepole. Anything with Tom Cruise is poison. She doesn’t need to hitch her horse to that broken down wagon. SH2…hmm, potentially a good choice.
Yes, she deserves a Oscar nom. I just hope she doesn’t get stereotyped in the roles she gets offered. I get the sense that she’s capable of a wide range of roles.
An amazing talent…She carried “Tattoo” up against other great actors.
Please stay away from MI4. Tom Cruise will ruin her career..
Honestly, I’d like to see her do a nice Romantic Comedy now.
I know it might seem strange, but I do see a lot of Julia Roberts in her…(Not as Lisabeth character)..
I hope she picks wisely and she seems intelligent enough to do so..
As a swede, who like all others fell in love with Noomis acting. I read and seen the whole Millenium trilogy. (Both in cinemas, and the televiesed version of the follow ups to “Tatoo”) And other procuctions she´s been in. Yes I can also see her as in an romantic comedy, or just an intelligent comedy. Cu´s this lady got tallent! She has a lot more to give as long there isn´t any “wisegyu” he thinks he could re-create a Lisbeth caracter of him own. Stieg Larssons Lisbeth Salander is Noomi throgh with. She had said so. Let Lisbeth R.I.P.
Quote from article: As an insider told me, “They’re originally meeting her expecting this hard-ass on a Harley wearing leather.
Are these producers or agents a bunch of dim-wits? Why in heavens name would she come across like her character Lisbeth? She’s an actress playing a CHARACTER people! Oy talk about ignorance…
Good for her! I love to hear about people fulfilling their dreams. I wish we could read more positive stories like this.
Great news. Great thread.
Of course Ms. Rapace deserves an Oscar nomination among others. It’s a shame this wasn’t pushed into the dialogue sooner when the first half of the year had a dearth of strong female performances.
And I don’t remember an actress doing a heavy-duty (messy, violent, raw, etc.) role not get nominated, if not win. Most recently, all the fab-looking ladies had to go there: Theron, Berry, Swank. Sure you can go into the whole “Oscar curse” since they’ve won those awards but that’s for another time… The challenge will be the more “likable,” “her-time-is-now” actresses come awards season: Bening, Moore. Next would likely be Hathaway, Portman, M.Williams.
The WARNING here? Sure, Ms. Cotillard’s performance broke the mold into the 21st-century: awarding a lead-actress Oscar to a woman for a foreign-language role. But then look at what she’s done for American audiences since: from Public Enemies to Inception. Weak supporting roles (on paper) that she gave her high-standard best to. Really her Piaf role was the peak, and it’s been decreasing wattage since then.
Ms. Rapace and co. have too much at stake to not balance the promises of tentpoles to character studies. She’s certainly capable.
I hope Noomi chooses her projects carefully. She seems to be the type for better, more independent work in my view. A few carefully placed blockbusters will benefit her, provided they aren’t too… schlocky? Noomi should work alongside actors like George Clooney, DiCaprio, etc.
The expectations of the producers/agents on their initial impressions of her is priceless. Good comedy, guys.
I agree with Doctaz. I’ve seen her in Millennium and two other movies and I think she is to good to play an appendix in a blockbuster. I hope she makes good choices, otherwise she might get lost between so-so known Hollywood actresses with some boring roles to play and loose her edge. I would hate seeing it.
Absolutely, without hesitation Noomi deserves an oscar for her performance. I have just seen part II of the trilogy; can’t wait to see the final part.
Equally as important is the need to call Hollywood on its consistent arrogant, narrow-minded, and politics as usual type of behavior. I totally agree with the all of the previous comments regarding this issue. Simply put, this series has been done superbly with no need for a remake of any kind-particularly not this soon. Why??? Could it be that Hollywood thinks they can do it better, not to mention the opportunity to make more money-just plain greed. Makes you wonder where Americans get their reputation.
Happy dance for Noomi! She was blistering in Dragon, she deserves to get some great parts! I’m pleased to see that Brad Bird is doing MI4; great news there too.
She is a very good actree… but just wait for the two other movies… she is even better!!!
["Wouldn’t that be the ultimate bitch-slap to Fincher and Hollywood. “No, no, step aside, we will now make the AMERICAN VERSION of these films starring OUR CHOICE – and then Noomi wins the Oscar, and the Hollywood versions just… die on the vine."]
Why do people make stupid comments like this?
I really think Rapace pulled off one of the most memorable performances in the last decade as Salander. Watching her interviews explaining her preparations is a delight. She clearly is a very intelligent, bubbly and naturally smiley character. She totally transformed into this complex entity and THAT is Best Actress material. All the other ladies who are receiving buzz: The Lawrence’s, The Bening’s, The Hathaway’s, we’ve seen these roles all before. Rapace is a true professional and I will be greatly disappointed for her if she isn’t at least nominated.
Noomi deserves the Oscar for Best Actress. Her Lisbeth was perfection. She captivated many hearts with her performance. Many have been re-energized by Noomi’s Lisbeth, and the trilogy will become a classic performance worldwide due to her acting. Hollywood voters should be fair and avoid playing American favorites or let’s protect the U.S. version of the films. Film lovers worldwide connected with Lisbeth due to Noomi’s acting strength in a very difficult trilogy, and that acting deserves the Oscar for Best Actress.
Not so many people in Croatia read Millenium trilogy by Stieg Larsson, and even less Croats seen the swedish trilogy on screen. Why? Well, books came out in 2009, but weren’t a HIT, and films were only in art cinemas at the end of 2010. I was lucky to have a friend who lived in Sweden most of his life, and in 2008 he gave me some swedish films with english subs to watch…two of them were with Noomi. That’s where I fell in love with her work. After that he told me about trilogy but I had to wait for croatian edition…Books were fascinating!!!!!! Few months ago this swedish friend sent me the films with english subs – and I was AMAZED!!! Noomi is soooooooooooooo good as Lisbeth, incredibly good! Thumbs up girl! She deserves nomination, but more than that she deserves the Oscar! I don’t remember that any other actress had such a strong, complicated, twisted role to play. Brilliant career is ahead for Noomi. If you ask me, american version with Craig Daniel and Mara Rooney will be just a pale shadow…no mather how good Fincher is. There is only 1 Lisbeth Salander and that is Noomi Rapace!!!
You made some respectable factors there. I appeared on the web for the issue and found most individuals will go together with together with your website.
I feel she is a great actress in this movie
