Paramount Pictures has made a first-look producing deal with Stefan Sonnenfeld, the founder and president of visual effects company Company 3. Sonnenfeld has provided post production work on such Paramount films as the first two Transformers films, Star Trek and Cloverfield. Sonnenfeld’s company has also worked on such films as Alice in Wonderland, Pirates of the Caribbean, 300 and Watchmen.
Considering how stingy studios are with producing deals these days, this is a surprise considering that Sonnenfeld hasn’t yet produced a picture. He will form a new production label and to Paramount Film Group president Adam Goodman, part of his value will be turning the studio onto talent with film potential that Sonnenfeld works with in the commercial, advertising and video worlds. Sonnenfeld’s advertising work includes campaigns with Nike, and Company 3 is currently working on the third Transformers film and the fourth installment of Pirates of the Caribbean.
“With post-production playing a large role in the filmmaking process these days, leveraging my knowledge, skills, resources and relationships opens up many different possibilities in this new partnership,” Sonnenfeld said.

Wow! That’s huge! Congrats Sonnenfeld & Comnpany 3!
As a shareholder in Company 3′s parent company Ascent Media Group, I sure hope this producing deal is part of Ascent. Can you say conflict of interest? I bet Mr. Sonnenfeld has a non-compete clause in his contract somewhere.
I’ll bet you gave your people hefty raises!
Dear Bad, are you making your comment as a shareholder or as a whiny party-spoiler?
Good luck with your share, schmuck.
Great timer and a good guy.
Bravo Stefan! It’s been many years since we’ve worked together, but you are a gem in this town and the leap of faith that the studio is taking I’m sure will be rewarded. — Stefan is an auteur and does work very closely with many, many brilliant visionaries in commercials and music videos who now will have a better chance of being seen by the tight-knit movie industry. Love it! Gives me hope for this town…
Congratulations! Paramount and Sonnenfeld a winning combination for sure.
Great thinking outside of the box in this new industry landscape.
Way to go, Stef!! Now… about that idea I had…
Uh, the guy is a colorist. Please tell me how that makes hum a producer?
Anyone coloring film that has been shot with the best cameras in the world by the best DPs in the world with the best coloring systems in the world can be “the best colorist in L.A.
My 10 year can do the same if given the chance.!!
Stefan is way overrated and he knows it, we all know it, everyone knows it. Except his clients.
And all of his movies will have a slightly green tinge to them and be overly contrasty–The Stefan look.
Let’s hope some of the money goes to infrastructure as Company 3 is still doing tape to tape color correction and can’t handle alpha mattes to save its life.
And there was a time when euro-sounding Stefan (steph-ahn) was simply Steve. I guess you have to sound European to be a color artiste.
But, hey, best of luck.
Congratulations! I have the same question about Ascent’s involvement, however. More out of curiosity than competitive interest. Though, admittedly, I can’t see how this would be competitive in nature, assuming post activities are channeled through AMG companies.
Hey MJ….what does make a producer?
I thought that a producer was somebody with a telephone who knows a writer.
How is a colorist a producer? Please someone explain that to me.
How is this a conflict of interest? If Stefan develops projects, it would seem there is a greater chance they would be posted at Company 3. Company 3 does not have a producing deal (other than this one with Stefan), so there’s no conflict of interest on that front. Not sure what your point is, this seems good for Stefan and possible benefit to Company 3.
Hey Stefan: Congratulations! Great news..
Does anyone know if Stefan is staying at “Company 3″ now that is owned by Deluxe?
