EXCLUSIVE: I hear that Paramount has hired the writing team of Art Marcum and Matt Holloway for close to $1 million to reimagine a new release of the live action feature Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. “The studio is looking at this as its next huge franchise, like Transformers,” a source just told me. Indeed, Platinum Dunes which is Michael Bay’s, Andrew Form’s, and Brad Fuller’s company, is producing along with the original producers Scott Mednick, Galen Walker, and Maria Norman. Paramount’s Adam Goodman is fast-tracking and wants a first draft by October so the studio can take it out to directors right away for a 2012 release.
The speed is understandable since Viacom Inc’s Nickelodeon acquired the global intellectual property rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for $60 million in partnership with sister company Paramount Pictures for the TV, film and video game franchise which the characters have spawned. ICM made the script deal for Marcum and Holloway, who shared credit on Marvel’s Iron Man (the good one…) and just wrote the Highlander reboot for Summit Entertainment. The latter will start shooting next year under helmer Justin Lin whose Fast And Furious 5 is filming right now for Universal.
Considered one of the most popular kids’ television programs of the 1980s, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was created in 1984 by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. It first debuted as a successful comic book series and then became a hit animated TV show, a live-action television series, three live-action films distributed by New Line (1990-1993), and a recent CGI film distributed by Warner Bros. The property also has translated into a significant consumer products business, with DVDs, video games, toys and more generating billions of retail dollars.

Can’t wait. This was my action figure of choice. The first film was kinda dark like Gotham, liked that but then it got too cartoony. But I could see it on Transformers level, more color, action and the back story and all the villains, and characters are cooler than hearing about the “cube.” I prefer “the ooze”.
The Transformers are so serious. These guys are just laid back and cool. Every time I see the guys from Jersey Shore they remind me of the Ninja Turtles, in looks and how they talk. DJ Pauly and The Situation especially.
The Situation could voice one of them.
You can not be serous! None of the douche bags from the Jersey Shore should ever voice one of the turtles!
You’ve clearly never read the comic books dude. The Turtles are nothing like the tools from Jersey Shore.
Sorry Fan Boys. I didn’t read the comic books but I watched the show and had every single action figure (and the technidrome and the sewer playset). I made my own storylines for hours in my basement and did stop animation with them. I love them just as much as you do.
I was more bringing up that the Jersey Shore cast LOOKS like Ninja Turtles. I think it would be funny though if the Situation voiced Michelangelo.
I respect your passion though.
They have to get Cory Feldman back to voice Donatello. Pretty sure he will make the time.
Definitely. We all know corey missed out on the 2nd one and made it quite clear that he was hurt by it. Paramount you have to give corey another shot
I can not believe any one would think a tool from that crap reality TV show is worthy to voice a turtle!! Please don’t make stupid and unintelligible comments anymore Lord! Jersey shore is a disgrace to television and anyone who watches that show does not have many brain cells and is easily and cheaply entertained. Retard!
HOW DARE YOU COMPARE THE TURTLES TO THOSE PLASTIC FAKE DOUCHES! YOU SHOULD BE BANNED FOR LIFE FROM ANYTHING TURTLES RELATED.
I was sorta hoping we could go at least three hours without an announcement that another 70′s or 80′s remake has been greenlit. How many more of these could there possibly be?
I agree! There should be a rule: You must wait 7 years before you remake a movie. What’s next? ALICE IN WONDERLAND greenlit?
Umm…it’s been a tad longer than 7 years since the live-action Ninja Turtles movie
Patrick, you TOTALLY hit the nail on the head. I was wondering how bottomless this pit of 70s, 80s and 90s rethreads can be. STOP THE INSANITY. Whatever happened to creative and fresh ideas? What next?
A re-imagining of the “Bionic Man v. Sasquatch” where Sasquatch, a gender confused furball, lashes out at folks in a remote Alaskan village where Steve Austin just happens to be vacationing?
A live-action “Starblazers” with a new-fangled wave-motion gun that shoots its drippy load in 3-D?
An Americanization of the old Japanese TV show “Ultra-Man”, this time starring Tom Cruise as the guy who transforms into a 50-foot robot who saves the day from googly-eyed aliens that curiously look like Alf on crystal meth?
Oy, vay!
Bring on the mean, green, fighting machines!
Just don’t make it like Transformers!
“… generating billions of retail dollars” … and only selling for $60MM … good grief. Where’s my $60MM when I need it…
Funny, actually, since Paramount was the studio that passed on the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie in the late 80′s. Just some history and trivia.
Different regime now.
I like hear this ..i’m sure box office
They should have got Ben Edlund to write it.
Dear Paramount:
That horse is dead. Please stop beating it.
Thank you.
I agree. I think everything down to the way these turtles look is just too 80′s at this point. I hope the studio is right about this – the Transformers franchise is a completely different beast than TMNT. Previous attempts at these movies (post early 90′s) have not done very well.
And where is the international awareness for this property? Is this really worth it?
“…Previous attempts at these movies (post early 90’s) have not done very well…”
What are you talking about? Previous attempts have done fine. As a matter of fact, the cg feature may have been critically bashed and has been pretty much forgotten about, but it ranked Number one in the box office and it faired much better then this year’s Kick-Ass and Scott Pilgrim on opening day.
This reboot is the poster child for all that is wrong with studio think today.
never saw the cg feature but let’s hope this reboot will improve the characters’ look. in the photo above they look like walking edamame.
It’s kind of hilarious to continue to see this as a kiddie series as the original black-and-white comics were very scuzzy, very fucked up “Heavy Metal” refugees that you would have imagined a movie version would be best directed by Gary Sherman (“Raw Meat,” “Vice Squad”) than a film franchise that eventually featured Vanilla Ice. While Paramount would never go back to the original comics (the movies would gross less than “Scott Pilgrim”), hopefully the new movies will get a least a couple of people interested in reading what were actually pretty amazing books there for awhile.
You hit the nail on the head. The classic comics were incredible. Honestly, even though it would make no money, I’d love to see someone make something from the comics.
They should get Eastman to produce.
TMNT is a timeless concept. The problem has been the writers/producers.
They try to make the movies too dark and serious.
The comic books and tv show were more WEIRD than anything and involved lots of pop culture.
If they wanted to make this a blockbuster, they would play on nostalgia and include the weird, crazy characters like General Krang, Usagi Yojimbo, and Baxter and shy away from boring, regular characters. We have CGI now, we can afford to have more characters than Casey Jones (I dont consider him boring though).
It should be a stylized, semi-self referential B-movie….they’re ^%$#^$ talking turtles that study ninjitsu and crave pizza for goodness sakes, this isnt supposed to be taken seriously!
I agree but maybe there’s a happy medium between the two styles. It would be cool if it was more on a huge blockbuster Transformer scale as stated as long as the script was good.
And for all you remake haters…. this is the Echo Boom’s turn to have our cartoon properties turned into nostalgic blockbusters. Gen X and Baby Boomers have gotten all their stuff upgraded and remade
Why is Michael Bay still able to greenlight franchises?
I’m serious, if someone can explain it to me, I’d really appreciate it.
If they’re gonna do it right, they need:
1.) The darker, violent style of the comics.
2.) (Even though I hate Michael Bay, I will say this)…more action!
3.) Motion-capture performance turtles (similar to Avatar VFX).
4.) A script that’s both dark and brooding as well as witty.
5.) (In the vein of Transformers and Chris Nolan’s Batman), present day and (almost) grounded in the real world.
6.) GOOD ACTING!
7.) Shoot with 3D cameras.
As long as they ave good actors. I could imagine casting like this:
Zachary Quinto-Leonardo
Jesse Eisenberg-Donatello
Chris Pine-Raphael
Shia LaBeouf-Michelangelo
Shia LaBeouf? Seriously??
I hope you end up in a ditch.
Nice line-up but I noticed two things. You chose two actors that played opposite each other in Star Trek and as much as I loved the new and improved Star Trek, I didn’t think Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine fit together. Second, Shia LaBeouf? Are you aware of just how many movies this guy has been in lately? Good actor, but he needs to take a rest.
I heard about the Ninja Turtles was sold for Nickelodeon for $60 million, and says that they just bought the 1980s Ninja Turtle rights, so I believe that it’s going to look similar to the old cartoon from the year; 1987 through 1996.
Maybe it could be a possibility to let the Ninja Turtles have their favorite color bandanas, knee-pads, elbow-pads, wrist-pads, and maybe the initial buckles on their belts, and maybe April be a reporter, and bring Shredder, Krang, Technodrome, Bebop, and Rocksteady, and maybe a possibility to bring Mona Lisa (Raphael’s girlfriend), or Venus (from Next Mutation series) to this movie, I think. (What do you guys think?)
From 2007 movie of TMNT, they used:
Mitchell Whitfield as Donatello
James Arnold Taylor as Leonardo
Mikey Kelly as Michaelangelo
Nolan North as Raphael
Sarah Michelle Gellar as April
Chris Evans as Casey Jones
So, for the voices of the Ninja Turtles, here’s what I think as the voices of the Ninja Turtles:
Barry Gordon as Donatello
Cam Clarke as Leonardo
Townsend Coleman as Michaelangelo
Rob Paulsen or Hal Rayle or Michael Gough as Raphael
maybe Lauren Ambrose as April
(What do you guys think?)
Thank you.
I think that since Tom Welling is no longer going to be playing Clark Kent on Smallville, that he should lend his voice to the movie. I think he has a very Raphael type voice.
UMMMM if anybody is going to be cast,Ernie Reyes Jr. needs to be back in his original Michaelangelo form.
The kid from Dragoball evolution as Leonardo. that is all
Ernie Reyes Jr was Donatello in the first movie, and even then he was only the stunt guy in the suit. Also lets keep anything DBE FARRRRRRR away from this movie.
But I agree Ernie should totally come back for at least a cameo…
One more thing!
Go watch TmnT 2, right before Keno’s initiation into the foot, and I never noticed it before, but theres a brief cameo from Michael Jai White!! (for those of you who care… aka me..)
The 2007 CGI TMNT was awesome – if you havent seen it – watch it
it opened #1 in the country
and the voices they used in that version were the best
Nolan North – Raphael
James Arnold Taylor – Leonardo
Mikey Kelley – Michaelangelo
Mitchell Whitfield – Donatello
hopefully the new writers/producers don’t get all star-struck and use celebrities for every role like other people do
here’s an idea…hire people that are right for the job – duh
what about the original team from the 1st flick? they kept it quirky and trippy for all those kids and geeks. i say bring back eastman/laird/gray with all the muscle of bay to reboot the franchise.
I am really excited about this! the first two live action movies in the franchise were awesome! the third one wasn’t terrible. Even the cg film was alright.
I hope they do a great job with them. Just like they did by re- imagining the Batman movies. Maybe not as dark as the Batman films but you get what I mean.
i so cant wait for this movie.. imma big fan of TMNT comics to the movies.. i loved 1 n 2.. the third one was ok.. but i thought i could been better.. n the CGI version was alright as well.. i thought it would of been beast if it was darker.. now the reboot is comin and they are keepin it on the original, darker version.. itz gonna be an epic reboot.. hope they dont screw it up!!..
Naturally, I’m excited, so here are my casting choices: Leo-John Morris Raph-Erik Von Detten Don-Garrett Hedlund Mikey-Jonah Hill Splinter-Ken Watanabe April-Jennifer Morrison Casey-Alex Rodriguez Shredder-Jet Li
Baxter Stockman-Jason Schwartzman
yaaaay stoked for this movie when i was 5 all four were my imaginary friends very lame but i feel very nostalgic thinkin about the new movie super excited and they should bring back that michaelan guy to be mikeys voice he was the voice in the live action movies and they should definitely bring back venus!!!!!!
I like the TMNT of 2007, but Jameif the producers want to do a very good movie they should hire the director of X-men or the one who did “The Dark Knight”. Do the special effects Oscar worthy.
I never read the comics, but I want the movie to be based on them. Don’t focus the movie towards kids only, make it for the generation that read the comics.
