EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures has made a deal to turn Justin Bieber’s life story into a 3D feature biopic. Davis Guggenheim, the Oscar-winning director of An Inconvenient Truth, is negotiating to direct. The film doesn’t have a title, but Bieber will play himself in the film. The pic will be sprinkled with performances from his current concert tour. The film will come out February 11, 2011 on Valentine’s Day weekend. Manager Scooter Braun and Island Def Jam chairman L.A. Reid will produce the film. Because when you think of romance, you think of a 16-year old who looks much younger. This comes as Bieber made a deal with HarperCollins for a memoir about his life. Is there some explosive secret story that requires multiple platforms to tell? Probably not, but this kid has become enough of a juggernaut for film execs and publishers to see a potentially huge audience for these properties. The YouTube, Facebook and Twitter star has made himself into the most viewed recording artist on YouTube. How popular is he? The video for his recent song, Baby, attracted 270 million views on Youtube. Many think that one reason The Karate Kid overperformed on its opening weekend was because of the video that Bieber made with Jaden Smith. Meanwhile, we’re all waiting breathlessly for the inevitable sequel — Justin Bieber, Puberty: The Testicles Descend.

Are we saying this kid is more popular than the Super Bowl or Academy Awards?! Or are we talking a million hormonal teen girls watching his videos constantly? I don’t know a single person who even thinks about this kid or heard his songs, so I’m looking at who’s doing the promoting here and what any sane rational person is expected to believe when reading this.

This is not an April Fools joke. I have heard rumblings about this for a while. A Valentine’s Day release seems iffy to me though. Because of last years Valentine’s Day weekend success, the competition this year will be brutal. Including a Selena Gomez film that will be direct competition. On the other hand, a week earlier is Superbowl Sunday when only thrillers are playing.
That’s what has been confusing me. Studios have been quick to grab the Valentine’s Day weekend slot when there are too many movies opening that weekend. And there are less movies opening the weekend before. Are studios not thoroughly analyzing release dates?
February 11 has the Adam Sandler/Jennifer Aniston romantic comedy Just Go With It, the Nicolas Cage thriller Drive Angry, the Selena Gomez flick Monte Carlo, and the animated Gnomeo and Juliet. It should be noted that Drive Angry and Gnomeo and Juliet are also set for 3D. February 4 only has Sanctum and The Roommate. Logically, the February 11 release date makes no sense for the Justin Bieber film.
It might be felt that someone will blink and move their release date. I don’t think Selena Gomez can afford to move as Valentines Day is probably her best option. No one will want to move earlier because the Superbowl drop will hurt their business too much. I think Gnomeo & Juliet should hang tough and let Bieber move to another date, since his film can probably be moved without hurting it much.
Just Go With It is arguably the top dog for Valentine’s Day for obvious reasons so that’s probably locked in its place. Monte Carlo is produced by Nicole Kidman who’s also in Just Go With It. Plus Leighton Meester is in both Monte Carlo and The Roommate the week before. So I don’t necessarily see Valentine’s as the best option for Monte Carlo. I was thinking April for that.
Why would they set to release the Justin Bieber flick so soon when the director hasn’t been signed yet? Granted, they usually don’t announce that sort of thing until the deal is done or close to done, but have they started filming the parts that aren’t pieces of concert footage? If this was meant to be the Justin Bieber story told in 8 Mile/Get Rich or Die Tryin’ fashion, like he said, wouldn’t it be better if it were released in the fall where there’s still plenty of room?
This sounds somewhere between Bob Rafelson’s HEAD (the monkey’s feature/concert film w/ jack nicholson) made for the audience of their morning show and The Spice girls “concert/feature film” spice world which was also for a similar audience 20 years later… With the success of the Disney feature film concerts of late it’s easy to see the “out of the box” thinkers at Paramount thinking they can cash on Bieber teen craze with a 25 Million dollar 3-D long form music video.

Just for kicks, they should re-release 8 Mile, U23D, This Is It, and Miley Cyrus’ Best of Both Worlds 3D Concert, ALL ON THE SAME DATE AS JUSTIN!!! That would be a trip!

Well as off right now it will be up against a Nicolas Cage action flick Ride Hard and a few other films including an Adam Sandler Romantic Comedy. There is still half a year before this supposed “film” would come out an that is plenty of chances for people to find interest in something else. Also I would conclude that there is an overlap of Bieber and Selena Gomez fans so they probably would be torn between the two.
In the end I don’t believe that there will be a huge outcome like Eclipse received in the first few weeks.
