Producers Guild Co-Prez Mark Gordon Apologizes To Board
EXCLUSIVE: I’ve learned that Lifetime formally notified Disney’s ABC Studios that prominent TV and film producer Mark Gordon six weeks ago used the word “nigger” twice during a table read of the pilot for the Army Wives spinoff. He did it in front of cast and crew — including two African-American actresses, pilot lead Gabrielle Union and Army Wives series regular Wendy Davis. “Lifetime took all appropriate steps and notified the studio that this is a situation that needs to be dealt with,” an executive tells me.
In turn, a ABC exec informs me, “it was dealt with appropriately. I can’t go beyond that.”
Gordon issued this statement to me: “I feel terrible about this. It was a stupid lapse in judgment. I didn’t meant [sic] to offend anyone, and I’ve apologized to everyone involved.”
Gordon, who is white, has a deal with ABC Studios. He not only is executive producer of Army Wives and one of ABC Studios’ busiest TV producers, but also executive producer of the series Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice with African American showrunner Shonda Rhimes. It was ABC Studios that first put them together because Rhimes had no showrunner experience. As a film producer, Gordon has worked with Steven Spielberg on Saving Private Ryan, Roland Emmerich on 10,000 BC, Mel Gibson on The Patriot, and Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock on Speed.
I’ve confirmed these details: At the table read, there was a scene in the script that had one character putting a gun to another character’s head. At that point, Mark Gordon stood up and started acting out what he said was a scene from Blazing Saddles. An eyewitness says he grabbed the person next to him in a headlock (Gordon claims he grabbed himself in the headlock) and shouted “I’m going to kill you nigger… nigger.” It shocked everyone in the room, “especially Union and Davis”, according to an eyewitness. “He offended the whole room. There was strong reaction to it,” an executive tells me. “He did apologize right after. Then folks who were there reported him to Lifetime HR [Human Resources] who then reported him to ABC Studios HR.” Said a Lifetime exec, “There’s nothing we can do about it. He works for ABC Studios.”
Several sources who know Gordon well inform me that he “likes to joke around” and “this was stupid and just a lapse in judgment”. One executive bluntly tells me, ”He’s an ass.” ABC Studios claims it has not received any complaints about previous Gordon behavior. But I’ve confirmed that the producer requires employees of his company to sign non-disclosure agreements and recently updated them. However, an email alerting me to the table read incident makes this accusation: ”The studio and network both found out about it but, in the end, everything was swept under the rug. The studio and network just paid lip service to ‘disciplining’ Mark Gordon and just moved on… As an African American who works in some capacity around the show, I cannot believe that this type of behavior is allowed. He says the most absolutely offensive things on a daily basis.”
Gordon’s publicist forwarded this scene from 1974′s Blazing Saddles using the N-word that he claims he was acting out. The men running a corrupt Old West town where almost everyone is named Johnson point their guns at the new sheriff, an African-American named Bart (played by Cleavon Little). The men call him the N-word. Bart then points his own pistol at his own head and uses the N-word about himself. This is video of the full scene:

Mel Brooks…brilliant.
Mark Gordon…clueless.
Army Wives is not a comedy, nor a satire so the fact that he would do this at a table read, out of context, means that he is obviously brain-dead.
Treme handled this best when the steve zahn character said the n-word and then proceeded to tell a pissed off black guy that it was cool because he was repeating what a black person said. then steve zahn got his ass kicked. that is what should happen here.
At which point the assailant would have been arrested. Which is what happens in the real world when you put your hands on someone, even someone who says something you don’t like.
anonymous jackass.
OOoooh. So sensitive! I would gladly put my hands and feet on any white person who used the n-word in my presence. And then after putting them in the hospital I’d send them a nice get well card, with the message, “Lighten up!”
Right. If it was an old white woman in a wheelchair you would.
What Mark Gordon said came straight from his heart ,it is his true self, how he thinks and what he is. He is prpared to address Black people in deragatory terms.
If this deragatory view of Black people was not in his heart and thoughts, he would not have expressed it. His apology is very lame and not a sincere he is just protecing himself from any backlash.
People with hatred of others love to express their hatred and negativity of others then immediately make a false and meaningless apology.
He is a racist at heart and he showed his true colours in the use and choice of his words
Not just Mel Brooks – Richard Pryor co-wrote the script.
Sounds like Gordon was just horsing around. Does everyone have to be so politically correct now that are not allowed a sense of humor?
The point is it WASN’T funny.
It is never okay to use the N word, even when horsing around. It has nothing to do with political correctness and everything to do with morals (please do not confuse this with religion – they two are not necessarily connected).
That scene is funny in the film for many reasons – the scene recreated outside the film and out of context is not.
It shows no one in Hollywood knows their movies anymore.
Gordon has hired Shonda Rhimes and Kasi Lemons. He loves to quote Mel Brooks, Preston Sturges, Billy Wilder in all meetings.
I have made three projects with him and known him over a 20 year period. He is not racist.
He’s a goof with a big heart and a terrible case of ADD. Gordon has also poured millions of dollars of his own money into saving a charter school in one of the worst neighborhoods in LA. He has poured a fortune into Chrysalis, a charity that rehabilitates homeless people in LA and gets them into jobs and apartments.
So, because he donates money, that gives him a pass? It kills me when white people say that word and then claim they’re not racist. It is a RACIST WORD. No matter the context. Anyone with half a brain knows that.
I don’t believe this. You can be an awesome person. A great friend. Donate tons of money and support the right (read, Left) candidates. Lead an exemplary, racially blameless life for upwards of 50 years.
But go ahead and quote a MOVIE that employs “the word that dare not speak it’s name” in front of the wrong people, and it’s like all of the wonderful stuff from the first paragraph never happened.
It goes away.
It means nothing, cause you are a dirty racist now, and you need to, at the very least, prostrate yourself, and at most, lose your damn job.
But if a black person says it, it’s not racist though? It only bothers you if a white person says it? Who’s being racist now? Why should white people not be able to say the same word as a black person (say Chris Rock) simply because the colour of their skin is white?
And I’m sure some of his best friends are Black people.
What does him saving a charter school and doing things with the homeless have to do with this?
Ok he’s not a racist, he just acts like one. Hmmmmm bet a million to one you’re white. Saving schools and homeless people is easy…just write a check. It’s hard to act right.
didn’t this whole thing play out already on “The Office?” Maybe ABC should send in an HR specialist to hand Gordon a form to sign, which he can subsequently sign Daffy Duck.
Good for him. How can someone so smart and has done so much, be so stupid? Since Obama has took office, some white people are really starting to show their true colors.
I don’t believe him to be a racist, just someone who can’t see why using that word is wrong – especially when no one knows what the hell he was doing it.
I love Blazing Saddles and quote from it myself, but I would never say the n-word without announcing the context first, and even then I doubt I would form the word because it is so abhorrent.
Thank you for educating Peter.
Its not about being PC, you don’t say the N word in public. If you are going to use it then do it behind closed doors. It was stupid of him to say it, period!
What about all the blacks that don’t mind using words like, “cracker” , “whitey” and “honky” in public? Why is it only white people have to be mindful of everybody’s little feelings but they have to take shit left and right? And before your little fingers start flying and calling me names, I’m black and I’m sick of hearing how offended blacks are at six little letters that mean nothing. Get over it. Unless everyone in that room at the time or even reading this can stand up and say they’ve never said a racist word in any manner, joke or otherwise, then sit down and shut the hell up. Have you never heard the saying, “Sticks and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me.”? It’s true, it’s only a word. Move on folks.
i think the point your obviously missing is that everyone should be mindful of language that could easily be found offensive. not to justify, but in my experience the epithets you mention in relation to whites is rarely said in the presence of white people or directed at them venomously. however, the n word has a lot more power given the weight of history. racism requires power (economic, institutional and otherwise); the power to affect lives based on race; historically, blacks have lacked that power. move on? like blacks should move on from being upset about slavery because it happened so long ago, right? read a history book, take an afr. amer. studies course and learn how racism is/was institutional and how many still feel the effects today. hell, talk to the average black person. sorry sis. oh, and yes, i’m black too. wait a minute…you might just be posing as black for this post given the ignorance of your statement. whatever you may be, you need to get a clue on this one.
Jan, Sarah et al,
Are you really that clueless? Unless you happen to be at KKK headquarters or run a strip club, when is it ever appropriate (or professional) to use derogatory and offensive language at the workplace?
If you are an educated American living in 2010 and you don’t know or understand why it is that some (and only some) blacks think it’s ok for them to use the word, but it’s never ok for whites toss the word around? You may want to crack open a book on American history as it relates to race relations in this country, because clearly you are not as educated as you think you are.
Gordon may not be a racist, but he certainly lacks quite a bit of judgment.
Well said. We need to move on. Blazing Saddles is a classic movie. It is what it is, very funny, but we should never use this word again or any other terms to describe ethnicity. I’m white and wish I had more friends of color. These race card issues are dividing us up. We have to be more inclusive of each other in order to better understand each other, rather than being so divisive and becoming more hypersensitive. Move on! We are the HUMAN RACE.
I think they close the doors at table readings, Jerry, so this one shoulda been fine.
How about not using the word at all.I don’t care if you are black or white the conotation this word is associated with is a horrible one.No one wants to go back to the old days where segregation was around and things like this were ok.He was wrong and he should apologize to everyone who was in the room black or white.Him donating to charity and helping the homeless should not give him a pass when he says something offensive. If people want to pat him on his back for his charity work-fine,just don’t do it in the same sentence as this horrible thing he did.The two things have nothing to do with each other except for the fact they were done by the same person. If he apologized sincerely then take him at his word and move on.
yes, ’cause black people should just relax about white people calling them the ‘n’ word. and all those offended white people should also just relax. damn white liberal guilt.
why don’t you try it one time and see how you relaxed you’ll be, when you’re laid out on the sidewalk. dumb comment dude
Using the N word is inexcusable even if horsing around in a white country club locker rom – this was a situation where the BOSS used the N word in a professional workplace which is why it is a far more grievous offense. There are rules of conduct in place and no ABC/Disney’s HR department will have to enforce them – just like if a grip had used the word on set.
He was just horsing around…maybe he should call your mother a few names and we can all say he was just horsing around. It’s about respect.
Unless there is a workplace related lawsuit, ABC won’t do anything about it because Gordon is not a direct employee. He is a sub-contractor with a multi-million dollar contract(s) and the studio doesn’t want to risk litigation from Gordon should they choose to buy him out and not be in the Mark Gordon business any more. Also, he is a Chris Silbermann client and I’m sure ABC doesn’t want to rock the boat with the agency.
Are you kidding me, his publicist sent you that? What a moron, just to prove that he was basing his rascist rants on a film and that is the excuse. Let’s start the protests now, I’m calling Reverend Al, Jesse, and everyone else. What a disgrace and what a black eye (or I’m sure Gordon would say “what an N eye”).
This will only grow and soon ABC / Disney will be forced to cut ties.
I know Mark Gordon, Mark Gordon is a friend of mine, and Mark Gordon is no racist. Mark is like all of us out here, brought up on movies, and will take any opportunity to mimic/quote them at the drop of a hat. If I had a nickel for every time some exec or producer thought they were Butch or Sundance…well….I would no longer be posting on here. Mark let his judgement get away with him, did a little Cleavon Little, probably thinking he was in a safe, post-racial room, in which everyone knew he was just kidding around. He was wrong, there is no safe with that word. Move on. Mark’s got his faults, like everyone, but he falls on the good guy side of the ledger.
Oh, and Mark? You forgot the cardinal rule. YOU doing the routine probably went over as well as if Cleavon Little did an anti-semitic riff….
No excuse, that was just stupid and he should lose his job for being a moron
I AGREE WITH YOU THAT THIS DAMN EXCUSE SHOULD BE GIVEN HIS WALKING PAPERS, I DONT CARE IF HE DONATES ZILLIONS TOOO, SOME ORGINIZATIONS, THIS, THAT NONENSE.hE INSULTED THE BLACK BROTHERS SISTERS, IN THIS COUNTRY, AND i FOR ONE AM OUTRAGHED BYE THIS RIDLICIOUS EXCUSE FOR A HUMAN BEING.i WOULD LOVE TOO DRAG HIM IN BYE THE HEAD OF THE HAIR INTO A TOWNE HALL MEETING IN FRONT OF AROUND 35 OF MY BLACK BROS, WHO LOOK LIKE FOOTBALL PLAYERS, AROUND 300 POUNDS STAND THIS EXCUISE UP WHO GOES AROPUND YELLING THEn- WORD IN PUBLIC, AND STAND THERE IN FRONT OF BLACK, BROS IN FRONT OF THEM AND YELL OUT THE n- word, I guarantee this excuse wont walk out–
As a black woman I find the word very offensive. What really offends me is when someone of my own race says it and thinks it is ok because we have the same skin color. Was he wrong?yes. So are a lot of the younger youth who use it on each other as a term of endearment.I think overall we as a people should not use the word period regardless of skin color.I can see how some white people don’t see the word as a problem when our black youth use it so openly against their brothers and sisters. For a word to have no power we must take away its’ power by refusing to use it.
SO let me get this right…just be cause you “know” this guy, and you claim he’s not racist that gives him a free pass to use a word the is clearly offensive in a room full of people who may not agree with what he thinks is funny ? Here’s an idea..maybe your “friend” should concentrate on being (oh, I don’t know) PROFESSIONAL while he’s at WORK ? I know that’s hard to wrap your head around..but maybe he should give it a shot…
Post racial in the film industry…then why are all the executives, producers, investors, show runners etc, mainly white males
I don’t care what anyone says. That is one of the funniest scenes, in one of the funniest movies of all time.
Everyone needs to lighten up!
You need to lighten down.
People are way too sensitive; everything has to be sooooo politically correct, all the time; it’s from a great movie. He should have said it was from Blazing Saddles before acting out the scene, but other than that; everyone needs to chill.
Perhaps you’re too INsensitive. The “too sensitive” card is overplayed.
says the guy who’s posted, like, 15 replies of outrage. I can’t be arsed to count em.
Stan, you’re “too sensitive”, and an asshat.
There’s almost NOTHING I love more, than when liberal Hollywood’s politcally correct racial politics backfires on them with one of their own. And they say Conservatives and Tea Party members are racist. Wonder how Gordon votes? I don’t, really…wonder, that is.
you don’t even know what you’re talking about. “liberal hollywood” is no more real than the boogie man. yes, many of the creatives are liberal, but many of the executives, manager, lawyers, etc… are not. people are not as political as people such as yourself who troll around on the internet obsessed with your conservative ideology, looking at *everything* through that one lens. they are motivated by money, and that type of person does not merely stick with one party or the other.
Yeah? Go to newsmeat.com and enter the names of some of those “executives, managers and lawyers” you speak of and see who their politcal contributions go to. Say hi to the Boogie Man then, cookie.
Completely unacceptable. I wonder what Shonda Rhimes will do especially the Isaih Washington incident. I’d love to be a fly on that wall…
This white woman is completely disgusted. I hate that ugly, ugly word. What an idiot.
I smell a witch hunt. It’s just a word and the biggest of double standards. When is this going to end?
You are so right. It is just a word. White supremacists and the KKK use it because they are just expressing their creative vocabularies.
Things that SHOULD happen:
1. His agency has to dump him (like Mel Gibson was dumped for the same offense.)
2. Advertisers should pull ads from his shows.
3. ABC Studios should cut him loose.
4. Karma will get him.
But this is Hollywood, and the guy makes tons of people tons of money… so he’ll get a pass.
Really those four things should happen?! Why not just also include:
5) He should stoned to death
6) Burn in hell for ever.
Please, get a grip. This is not even the same thing as Mel Gibson. You need to look at “context”.
Yes…used a wildly inappropriate comedy routine and probably should be taken off the show (in a real world job, he probably would be fired or at least on some suspension). He should obviously be punished…
But to then have everyone cut all ties with him is just so over board. Again, look at context. He was quoting a comedy, these are not his words (and I know very inappropriate and completely the wrong setting) but he was not calling anyone the “n” word directly or using it in anger.
If I quote a Chris Rock routine, does that make me a racist? No (although it might make me stupid if I do it in the middle of the office) Or if I quote Mel Gibson rant using the n-word, does that make me a racist? No.
I agree. Heaven forbid someone make a jewish joke — Hollywood screams from the top of their lungs.
I’ve heard this word used at another network, and nothing was done about it there either.
What has happened to us? Mark Gordon is one of the nicest of all the big producers that came up in the 80′s. Could he be clumsy with a joke. Sure. But he’s always been a nice guy, He actually says hello to people.
Well, since “he’s always been a nice guy” and “he actually says hello to people,” let’s just all forget the whole thing, right?
You people have the moral compass of Captain Bligh. Let the creep grovel for a little while.
He did not use it in a racist context, nothing “real” here. Hollywood and rap help put the n word into the vernacular so live with it.
Mark Gordon, you’re pathetic. Suddenly, in the middle of a table read, you “act out” one of the most disrespectful and deplorable scenes from Blazzing Saddles and one where the N-word is used? Are you mentally retarded? And to the publicist who sent the scene to Deadline somehow saying, “it’s okay, he was just quoting a movie…” there’s a ticket to moron-land waiting for you too. Idiots.
Totally agree. A new low for publicists.
The publicist who sent the clip was not necessarily condoning Mr. Gordon’s behavior, just trying to explain why it was that Gordon, in his colossally wrong-headed way, felt he was being funny, and that reenacting the scene at the moment was more likely to amuse than appall those present — even the African Americans. That his levity fell flat and then some is beyond dispute. But unless his performance was part of a much larger pattern of racial insensitivity or animus, it seems a bit much to be calling for his head. His chief sin was his tone-deafness and staggering obliviousness to context. He was not in a punch drunk writer’s room at one a.m. or in a bar on round number four. He was at a table read. For a drama. He should grovel extravagantly and find some gesture to convey the sincerity of his regret. Then everyone should just move on.
Who’s more clueless, Gordon of you. I say it’s you.
Gordon is just like every other racist in a position of influence. He doesn’t have a “history” of raicst behviour until that first time he gets caught, then people start coming forward.
If he wants to show his regret then he can resign from ABC, go live in a cave and never be seen nor heard from again.
This is 2010. It’s a little late in the day now for people to still be engaging in this behavior and pretending like they didn’t know it’s wrong.
JaySmack,
“This is 2010,” you write. “It’s a little late in the day now for people to still be engaging in this behavior and pretending like they didn’t know it’s wrong.”
Do you really suppose Mr. Gordon’s only PRETENDING he didn’t know his behavior was wrong? Not after the fact, I mean, but before he said it? That he, in fact DID know, in which case, his thought process must have gone something like this:
“Hey, why don’t I stop the whole table read right now and do that bit from “Blazing Saddles” where the N-word is used repeatedly. It’s wrong and inappropriate and bound to offend everyone here, especially the African Americans, but what the hell! If it brings a shit storm down on my head I can always PRETEND I didn’t know it was wrong, then everything will be fine.”
Gordon clearly wasn’t pretending he didn’t know he’d give offense. If he had realized, he’d have refrained from saying it and spared himself no end of grief.
And how precisely does my post show me to be even “more clueless” than Gordon? I only suggested that the publicist was not trying to excuse his actions, but to illustrate the admittedly tenuous grounds he had for hoping — “in his colossally wrong-headed way” — that his remarks might be construed as funny.
And, not knowing Mr. Gordon, I didn’t even assert that he’s NOT a racist; I only said that “UNLESS this was part of a larger pattern,” of racism — which might be demonstrated by, as you suggest, “people coming forward” — that we should not be in such a rush to crucify the guy. My implication was clearly that if it WAS part of a racist pattern, it should be dealt with more severely. How does any of this make me “more clueless” than the man who launched into a minstrel act at a table read?
Your post, while flatly labeling Gordon a racist, offers no evidence that his offenses go beyond the incident in question. You nonetheless suggest that he should live out his days in a cave “and never be seen or heard from again”. Given the even-handedness of this sentence, I can only hope you have no aspirations to join the judiciary.
While I agree that Gordon was completely out of line with this scene – you clearly have never watched Blazing Saddles, because that is nowhere near being a deplorable scene. First of all, the scene was written by Richard Pryor who was using it to show how stupid white folks in the film are.
You probably think that All In The Family was deplorable too.
Rowan, CLEARLY you are not familiar with Richard Pryor, so perhaps you shouldn’t be invoking his name.
Pryor STOPPED using the “N” word in his routines in the mid-80′s after he went to Africa. Even his long-time collaborator and best friend Paul Mooney stopped using it.
Why? Because they both realized it was RACIST!
Get a clue for God’s sake.
Gordon was being racist, not funny, and has probably been a bigot for a long time, this is just the first we’re hearing of it. Just like Mel Gibson he should be sent packing and ABC ought to invalidate is contract on the spot.
Sorry, but the point still goes to Rowan. Blazing Saddles came out in 1974, well before Pryor renounced the word. And he was right to use it in the script–any other word would’ve been anachronistic–a mob of 19th century racists were not likely to shout, “Kill the African-American gentleman!” Little’s sheriff uses the word in a way that mocks the stupidity of the racist townspeople.
As for comparing Gordon to Gibson. Let’s see…one guy is given to drunken rants in which he insults nearly everybody on the planet while also threatening to murder his wife. The other quotes a movie scene that satirizes racists.
And Paul Mooney didn’t stop using the N-word until just a few years ago — after the Michael Riccards meltdown. Though it should be noted that no one has ever used the N-word to greater and funnier effect than Mooney.
“Point goes to Rowan?”
This isn’t a game moron. And the point was that Pryor STOPPED using the n word. PLEASE learn to read before you seek to reply.
Pryor stopped using the word a decade after Blazin’ Saddles came out. It’s part of a larger question: If an artist renounces all or part of an earlier work, must the audience renounce it too? Or can the audience say, “Sorry, you were right the first time”?
In Blazin’ Saddles, the word reinforces Pryor’s anti-racism theme. In the 19th century, “proper” people, as the townspeople believe themselves to be, would have said “colored,” so it fits that the bad guys use the n-word. In contrast, Pryor could’ve had the townspeople exclaim, “The sheriff’s colored!” But by having them use the n-word instead, no one in the audience can miss that their “propriety” is just a veneer over the ugliness that is racism. The word sends a powerful message that “good” people who are racists are no better than the evilest of bad guys.
Saying the “n” word is deplorable–no matter what, I don’t care how “funny” you thought it was.
Why is the scene from Blazing Saddles deplorable? It’s making fun of the racism and stupidity of the white racist characters.
Simply saying a word that can be used in a racist way, is not itself a racist act. Or does context no longer matter?
That said, Gordon’s use of it, while not racist, was certainly inappropriate. But the PR person was showing the context, and proving it wasn’t racist but just plain old stupid.
Tah,
While you’re attacking the use of the N-word as “mentally retarded,” you should realize that Fox TV has instituted a policy of trying to ban the R-word from their shows. That word has historically been used to hurt those least able to defend themselves or comprehend that the shame falls on the one who uses it, not them.
As for the Blazing Saddles scene, white folks today should know not to go there, but I’m not sure it makes him racist to act out a scene that shows a black guy out-smarting a group of dumb white racists. If Gordon has a history, it’s different, but real racists do things like not hiring black people, which doesn’t seem the case here.
Perhaps if he had at least quoted the line correctly, it MIGHT have made some sense, but in or out of context, it’s not a scene one should be quoting in public.
Isaiah Washington, an African American actor, was fired from Grey’s Anatomy for using the homophobic “F” word [now grant it he was given a reprieve and then proceeded to stick his foot back in his mouth AND he allegedly had a history of homophobic behavior] but what action if any will be taken against Gordon?
Just wondering out loud.
Somehow I doubt ABC will sever all ties with him.
Difference is, Isaiah was specifically using his insensitive language to target and belittle another person.
Unless someone can show evidence that Gordon was intentionally trying to belittle or insult someone, then we should all recognize it for the insanely stupid move it was, smack him upside the back of the head and accept his apology.
I noted that the two instances were different “Keep Wondering”. I wasn’t defending Isaiah Washington’s hate speech. And I posted before Gordon’s apology.
But either way people know who they can target and make fun of in this town and who they can’t. Make a comment about Asians and nobody makes a peep.
I’ve developed projects with Mark Gordon and he is a fair and stand-up guy. Is he perfect?…well, no. but when he fumbles, he owns it. Give him a break!!!
“Fumbles”. You’re kidding right? There’s NO excuse for saying that word, especially in front of your African American actors.
I find it hard to believe that he suddenly had a lapse in judgement that came out of nowhere…but I wasn’t there so I;ll have to give him the benefit of doubt.
But if he’s really a racist, there will be other incidents and now is the time they will come out.
Would a racist have worked with Shonda Rhimes, an African-American woman to make a show that features many African-Americans in positions of power?
ABC Studios is pathetic. Mark Gordon should be fired. Gordon’s crap shows how utterly clueless and entitled he feels he is.
If ABC tolerates this kind of crap, why is it so hard to believe that Nicolette Sheridan wasn’t abused by Marc Cherry and ABC brushed that under the rug, too? Seriously, I don’t find it much of leap that if the studio can look the other way in the face of blatant racism that it wouldn’t have a problem dismissing sexism either.
I wonder how long it will be before Whoopi Goldberg comes out and defends this creepy moron.
This is a non-story. The guy quoted a scene from Blazing Saddles at a table read because there were parts of the script that reminded him of it. This happened weeks ago and it’s no surprise that this “story” came out just now, on the day Gordon let a film exec go from his company.
This is NOT a non-story. It’s an example of the higher-ups getting away with reckless, juvenile, and abusive behavior without being punished or reprimanded. Kudos for Deadline for reporting this incident.
Just because you’re quoting a movie doesn’t make it justifiable.
Who was let go from the company?
Seriously. Everyone needs to chill the fuck out.
It was tasteless, sure, but it’s a great scene from a great film that in itself is doing its bit to take the power out of that horrible word.
“Everyone needs to chill the fuck out.”
And you need to shut the fuck up. Racism may not bother you but you will nto tell anyone whether they can or can’t respond to it.
True.
i think you said it all. he was acting out a scene from a very popular movie, to suddenly get all pc about this is just crazy. the movie was in bad taste, the movie is considered a classic, you can’t put all the blame on this guy.
Fuck with Fb friends, fuck with us all.
Fire his ass.
This is absolutely offensive! Gordan should be fired. This should be done right away! If he uttered an anti-jewish remark he would be fired that day! Racists remarks should not be tolerated or explained away!
Mark Gordon *is* Jewish. Schmuck.
But hes not black jackass.
If he wants to make racist jokes let him make them about Jews then. Let them try to laugh it off when the anti-semites come out of the woodwork and say “Hey, that Jewboy Gordon said it, so how can it be racist. Lighten up kikes.”
You Gordon defenders have no idea how stupid your remarks reveal you to be. PLEASE get sterilized at the earliest.
Um, does your comment insinuate that Jews in Hollywood don’t give a damn about anyone else’s belittlement except their own? Are you an anti-semite in hiding or was this your way of being overt about it?
Clearly you’re the one who needs to grow up. And using the fact that we have an African-American president as an excuse is just plain stupid.
