The stage and screen and television star who won an Academy Award for 1963′s Hud and received three Emmy nominations died today of lung cancer at her home on Martha’s Vineyard. She was 84. After winning a Tony award for Another Part of the Forest on Broadway in 1946, she made her film debut in 1949′s John Loves Mary. Her movies included The Fountainhead, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Breaking Point, Operation Pacific, A Face in the Crowd, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and In Harm’s Way. She suffered a series of strokes in 1965 at age 39, and her inspirational struggle to regain her ability to walk and talk were chronicled in her 1988 autobiography, As I Am. Neal was offered the role of Mrs. Robinson in 1967′s The Graduate but turned it down. Instead, she returned to the big screen in 1968′s The Subject Was Roses. She continued acting all the way through this decade.

She endured a lot. Made magic on the screen.
Rest well.
a class act, and a classy performer. She was right up there with Bettie Davis and Tallulah Bankhead, back when the terms “Leading lady” and “Character Role” really meant something. Anyone who knows beans about film or the way Hollywood used to be knows that we’ve lost someone unique and inspirational. We shall not see her like again, and I weep for her passing. Now,If You’ll excuse me (and even if you won’t!) I’m going to watch “In Harm’s Way” and remember what a real actress could do, even with a small part.
Spectacular, ahead of her time. So many actors and actresses have their shining moments in works of Larry McMurtry, but the effect his tone has on actors is mirrored by the effect she had on material: simple, real, resonant. God bless.
I’ll always remember her from the 1951 Day the Earth Stood Still. Requiescat in pace.
Had the previledge of seeing her perform on the Broadway stage in “A Room Full Of Roses”
She will be miised
Great actress, totally underrated as a performer in a world of over-exposed, talent-less wannabes. Rent THE FOUNTAINHEAD, HUD, A FACE IN THE CROWD, for starters, and you can watch a true talent at work. A survivor of tragedies, she was quite the lady. May she rest in peace.
“Hud” is a great movie and she’s great in it but a good (TV?) re-make is in order in that in McMurtry’s original novel (“Horseman, Pass By” – really good; just read it recently) Neal’s character is African American. Great role for an African American actress – great roles for lots of people frankly including Zac Efron in the Brandon de Wilde part, or somebody like him who can actually ride a horse.
Patricia Clarkson is the equal of Patricia Neal (and an American Helen Mirren by the way.) You just sit back and watch.
Met Patricia Neal at a signing event in the lobby of Film Forum. That great regal carriage remained in her senior years.
And that voice…
An aside (of many I suppose
Poor Los Angeles. “Hooray for Hollywood” I guess but nothing half as great as the repertory programming at Film Forum in the West Village.
Patricia Neal was brilliant in HUD, as was most of the cast. She was smart, sexy, attractive, perceptive. The notion of a remake is problematic, despite the excellence of the original novel. Who will replace Paul Newman, the ultimate rascal, Brandon De Wilde, Melvyn Douglas, and of course, Patricia O’ Neal? Let it be. Their performances leaped from the screen as no one’s do now.
The Film Forum is one of things I miss most about New York now that I live in Los Angeles.
That smiley face is a typo. I don’t know how it happened. I don’t even know how to do emoticons. I’m too busy wasting my time trying to date them.
Great lady. She was also the original Olivia Walton in that holiday classic “The Homecoming.”
RIP sweet girl. The Abbey will miss you.
Yes, the Abbey will miss Patricia!!!! I had the pleasure of spending time with her many times at the Abbey. Brilliant actress, great humor and fine woman. I am grateful to have known her.
Agreed, she was a fantastic actress, with a very distinctive voice. The Hasty Heart was my fav of hers, excellent Drama.
God Speed Patricia Neal God Speed.
She should have gotten an “Oscar” for “A Face in the Crowd’, she was brilliant. God bless Patricia
A little trivia; I recall reading somewhere that she thought the script for “The Day the Earth Stood Still” was ridiculous. I watch this original whenever it’s on cable,no matter what she thought about the script I think she still did a fine job of playing her role.
ONE OF THE BEST FILMS THAT I HAVE IN MY D.V.D. COLLECTION, IS THE WALTONS XMAS IN WHICH IT WAS THE PILOT BEFORE THE ORIGINAL WALTONS SERIES AIRED AROUND 1972 ON CBS. IN THE PILOT PATRICIA O NEAL PLAYS OLIVIA WALTON THE MOTHER OF THE CLANN. I LOVED HER IN THIS VERY STRONG. AND A EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE. JUST LOVED HER INN IT. SHE ACTED BESIDE RICHARD THOMASS IN THE PILOTT AND THE 2 WERE JUST SO DAMED POWERFUL GOOD. FACING REAL LIFE ISSUES ON CAMERA WAS PATTYS STRONGEST SUIT. AND THAT COMMANDING VOICE. ONE HELL OF A ACTRESS. GOD BLEES YOU ANGELL. FOR BATTLING STROKES AND GIVING US THE BEST MOMENTS IN OUR LIVES. IF YOU GET YOUR HANDS ON THE ORIGINAL PILOT TOO THE WALTONS I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.
Absolutely right. The Waltons TV pilot was a terrific show. I remember being very little when she had her strokes while she was pregnant and seeing the pictures in the paper of her recovery and my mom trying explain to me what a stroke was. My favorite film is her with John Wayne in Otto Preminger’s In Harms Way.
BTW, She was married for 30 years to author Roald Dahl, author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Fantastic Mr. Fox. He is credited for her rehabilitation and recovery from the strokes.
She will sorely be missed.
My mom met her several times and said she was very classy and kind and never arrogant. Her work speaks for itself. And Patricia Clarkson could be her daughter!! The talent and the voice.
Patricia Neal was a nice person, back in 1951 I was in Opecation
Pacific with Patricia neal, I was Butch the new born Baby in the
Movie Opecation Pacific I am going to miss her.
Gary Sunkin
NOT TOO PUT PATTY O NEAL DOWNE IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM BUT AFTER GOING IN AND LOOOKING AT HER FILM, BIOGRAPHY. MAYBE SOMEBODY OUT THERE CAN CLARIFY SOMETHING ON HER. IN I965 SHE SUFFERS A SERIOUS STROKES. OKAY IN 1976 SHE IS OFFERED THE ROLE IN MISSS. ROBINSON OPPISITE DUSTIN HOFFMANN. OKAY IN THE FILM, DUSTIN HOFFFMAN PLAYS A MUCH YOUNGER MAN THAT MISS ROBIONSONN IS CHASING AFTER. OKAY IAM ASSUMING THE PART OF MISS ROBINSONN IS ONE OF A VERY SEDUCTIVE SEXY NATURED TYPE. HOW COULD THEY HAVE CASTED PATTY O NEAL IN THIS KIOND OF PART SUFFERING WITH STROKES, AND SLURED SPEECH. ITS STRANGE THEY OFFERED PATTY THIS PART IF THERE WERE BEDROOM SCENES IN MISS ROBINSONN. IT SEEMS STRANGE AND NO DISPRECT TO THE LATE PATY O NEAL. I JUST DONT SEE HOW SHE COULD HAVE PULLED OFF THE PART. I KNOW SHE TURNED IT DOWNE–
A class act who proved herself a survivor.
Rest peacefully.
A great actress who always fought each and every tragedy her life was quite remarkable in the end! GOD BLESS HER!
She was my Great Aunt and a great actress. She will be missed. R.I.P.
