Paul Lee’s tenure at ABC Family is ending on a high note. The last new series ordered under the former ABC Family president and current ABC Entertainment Group president, comedy Melissa & Joey, premiered last night as ABC Family’s biggest ever series debut among adults 18-49, 1.3 million. Melissa & Joey drew 2.2 million viewers overall, No.6 among all ABC Family series premieres and the most watched comedy series debut ever for the cable network.
Meanwhile, USA’s freshman Covert Affairs sealed its renewal by hitting series highs across the board last night, including total viewers (5.4 million, up 4% from last week), adults 18-49 (2.3 million, up 15%). Its lead-in, sophomore White Collar was also up, posting best total viewer and 18-49 numbers since its winter premiere (4.5 million, up 12%, 1.9 million, up 33%)

Yeahhh! I so heart Melissa and Joey. It’s like having my two besties back! They were so delish in MY FAKE FIANCEE and now in this new sitcom, they are pure TV gold! Plus, Aaron Serna is tasty too!!!
Good for Covert Affairs. Last night’s ep was particularly well done — among the best since the pilot. The show is good despite sometimes seeming like “Alias redux.”
If you’re complaining about Alias redux, get ready for Undercovers.
“White Collar” is a fine show. Too bad USA is pitting it against ball-busting competition. If not for that, its numbers would be much higher. Gets high cable ratings for reruns two days later.
USA continues to pull strong numbers with White Collar, Burn Notice, Covert Affairs, Royal Pains, etc. without having the TV-MA rating FX originals carry. It almost seems that USA Network is doing what sister NBC should be. I can’t help but think the success of USA originals means failure for NBC freshmen Chase and Undercovers. Reference last season: Royal Pains thrives, Mercy dies…
Just a theory…
Melissa & Joey has some charm but mostly grating. Seems not only does every male character have to talk like whining frat boys these days, but now the femmes are written as frat boys too. Yawn
I put both episodes on my iPod. I have watched them both like one hundred times. I love Melissa and Joey and it is my new favorite show on TV. I also think Aaron Serna should get a spin-off of his own. Maybe a show where he is the nutty neighbor who drops in and eats all their food or tries on all their clothes or some funny situation like that. Maybe he can even live in their guest house or walk their dogs. That would be really funny. He really should have his own show.
I agree!!! MELISSA AND JOEY is the best new sitcom on TV. It is even better than JERSEY SHORE. Which is my second favorite show. My favorite character is Aaron Serna. He is so funny. He is like the male Snookie. They should just mail him the Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy right now.
Rumor has it Robert Prinz is in hush talks to star with Serna in a “Laverne and Shirley” type spin off. It is about two guys that work in a brewery and live above a pizza place/bowling alley. High-jinks ensue. I can’t wait!
I heard they already ordered bowling-themed webisodes!
The “Laverne and Shirley” idea sounds epic but Serna would be like so wasted on a non-musical idea. After proving himself as Marc Ballas’ dance-double on the “Dance” episode of M&J, I think he has proven that he is a triple threat that can not only sing, dance and act but can also hold his own in as a romantic lead. As much as I am looking forward to seeing his tour de force performance on the upcoming ABCf made-for, PRETTY HUGE LIARS MAKE IT AND BREAK IT, I am more excited to see him show off his song-n-dance skills. Maybe they can develop a show where he is like a singer who moves to NYC and performs on the subway by night but works in a licorice factory by day. And sometimes he uses the licorice to solve crimes or make animal topiaries. It would be kind of like Edward Scissorhands meets Cop Rock, meets Glee, meets Felicity, meets Sex And The City. I think it would have a little something for everyone… especially people who like dancing and licorice.
