EXCLUSIVE: Robin Wright is negotiating to star in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the David Fincher-directed adaptation of the Stieg Larsson novel for Sony Pictures Entertainment. She is in talks to play Erika Berger, the publisher of crusading finance magazine Millennium, and the occasional lover of journalist Mikael Blomkvist (to be played by Daniel Craig). The film is casting up quickly, even as Fincher and producer Scott Rudin take their time searching for the right young actress to play the computer hacker heroine Lisbeth Salander. Berger figures in Larsson’s sequel books The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest, and Wright is negotiating a deal that includes options for both.
Wright is currently in the Bennett Miller-directed Moneyball for SPE, playing the ex-wife of ballplayer-turned-A’s general manager Billy Beane (Brad Pitt). She wrapped the female lead in the Robert Redford-directed The Conspirator that will debut at Toronto, and most recently starred in The Private Lives of Pippa Lee and A Christmas Carol. SPE begins production on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo this fall for a December 21, 2011 release. Wright’s repped by CAA and Anonymous Content.

As great as the casting is, I’m a bit concerned. The Swedish original had only implied more than a professional relationship between Erika and Mikael. Then it opened up in Play With Fire. I thought it all worked; the concern was mutual but not overplayed. Won’t having Ms. Wright play Erika “force” the relationship to show up some sexual/intimate heat at the newspaper?
Has anyone out there read the books to confirm that this is already there, and would work with Mikael’s transition to the Wenger family?
I saw Kristen Stewart in The Runaways the other day & though I love the Swedish films & don’t feel optimistic about the American versions, I think Kristen could do Lisbeth. She has the depth.
Wright as Erika — good. Stewart (as Jett) as Salander also sounds good.
The Swedish film was a masterpiece. Niels did an amazing job! I’m baffled why Fincher would take this assignment. The bar was set very high by relatively unknown filmmaker who made the film for $5M. Now all the pressure is on Fincher to give birth to a cinematic miracle. Anyone who is a hater on the Swedish film is basically too lazy to read subtitles.
You need to see A LOT more movies if you thought that film was a masterpiece. It had one good thing: Noomi Rapace. Every other aspect can and will most assuredly be improved upon by Fincher.
Loved the trilogy, loved the movie. Angelina Jolie perfect for Lisbeth, but too old and too tall. Natalie Portman 2nd choice. Daniel Craig will do well with more emotion put into his acting. Wright perfect as Erika. Movie was how I imagined the bk, hope Hollywood doesn’t glamourize it too much…
only an unknown will work for lisbeth
I like her. A good choice for the Ericka role.
I think the trilogy was great and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo followed the book just fine. I can only hope that the american version is as true to the book. Craig will do fine and Robin Wright should also work. I’ve never seen Rooney Mara so I can only hope for the best. I’ve seen to many movies ruin good books so keep your fingers crossed…..My wife and daughter have a new hero
her name as Lisbeth
