UPDATE: Sony Pictures Entertainment has issued a press release on Mara. I’ve included it after Deadline’s story break.
EXCLUSIVE: Ending one of the most drawn out and closely watched casting searches for an actress in years, Sony Pictures Entertainment and director David Fincher have chosen Rooney Mara to play Lisbeth Salander in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, the film that begins shooting this fall in Sweden, with Daniel Craig starring. The film will be released December 21, 2011. Rooney was considered Fincher’s first choice in the process: the director had just helmed her in The Social Network. Closing a deal will amount to a formality, because Mara essentially agreed to terms when she and other young actresses signed on to tests that Fincher and producer Scott Rudin have conducted over the past several weeks. Her deal includes an option for two sequels that will cover The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest, the second and third books in the Millennium Trilogy by the late author Stieg Larsson. The books continue the same murder conspiracy storyline.
Deadline revealed that Craig was signed a deal with two options weeks ago to play Mikael Blomkvist, the investigative journalist and part owner of the magazine Millennium, and Deadline also broke the story that Robin Wright was in talks to play Erika Berger, his occasional bed partner and the publisher of Millennium. Stellan Skarsgard was also reportedly in talks to play Martin Vanger, who joins the magazine’s board.
The search for Salander has been the role that really captured the public fancy. Slight of frame and short, Salander is a brilliant but troubled computer hacker who helps Blomkvist unravel a decades-long murder mystery. The storyline is as dark as the subject matter that Fincher tackled in Seven, and subsequent books establish Salander as far more than Blomkvist’s sidekick (and occasional lover).
While established actresses have been named as being in contention for the role — Natalie Portman (who tried to buy the books early on), Ellen Page (who filmed her own test), Carey Mulligan and most recently Scarlett Johansson — Fincher has focused his testing process on discovering an actress who fits Salander physically and in age proximity, which is early 20s. Mara was among a group of young actresses that included Alice In Wonderland star Mia Wasikowska, Sucker Punch’s Emily Browning (even though neither actress signed test deals), Fish Tank’s Katie Jarvis. Mara tested along with Sophie Lowe, Sarah Snook and French actress Lea Seydoux.
Mara is a strong match: she is the right age and looks like Salander. She also had the advantage of working with Fincher and Rudin on The Social Network. The sister of Brokeback Mountain‘s Kate Mara and the great granddaughter of New York Giants football team founder Wellington Mara and Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney, Mara was most recently seen in the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. Mara is repped by WME.
(Culver City, August 16, 2010) — Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara have been cast in the lead roles of Columbia Pictures’ three-picture adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s literary blockbuster The Millennium Trilogy under the direction of David Fincher. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo – the first film of the series, which also includes The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest – begins shooting next month in Sweden. The screenplay is written by Steve Zaillian and the film is being produced by Scott Rudin, Cean Chaffin, Ole Sondberg and Søren Stærmose. Mikael Wallen and Anni Fernandez are executive producers. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is set for worldwide release December 21, 2011.
The Millennium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson has been published in 44 countries and has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide thus far. In the U.S. alone, the series has sold over 10 million copies, and the sales were recently calculated at the remarkable rate of one book per second. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo has broken sales records in virtually every country in which it has been published. It has sold over 5 million copies in the U.S. and has out-sold any other e-book in that rapidly expanding market. A literary phenomenon, all three books currently sit atop the New York Times Best Seller lists. In describing the scale of Larsson’s achievement, The Economist said: “Stieg Larsson’s vivid characters, the depth of the detail across the three books, the powerfully imaginative plot, and the sheer verve of the writing make the trilogy a masterpiece of its genre.” Michiko Kakutani, of The New York Times, described the Lisbeth character: “Lisbeth Salander, Stieg Larsson’s fierce pixie of a heroine, is one of the most original characters in a thriller to come along in a while – a gamin, Audrey Hepburn look-alike but with tattoos and piercings, the take-no-prisoners attitude of Lara Croft and the cool, unsentimental intellect of Mr. Spock. She is the vulnerable victim turned vigilante; a willfully antisocial girl . . . who has proved herself to be as incandescently proficient as any video game warrior.” The three novels have all become #1 worldwide bestsellers, an achievement unrivaled in trade book publishing.
DAVID FINCHER most recently directed this fall’s much-anticipated The Social Network for Columbia Pictures, which opens in the U.S. on October 1st.
DANIEL CRAIG recently starred in the two highest-grossing films in the James Bond franchise, Quantum of Solace and Casino Royale. His earlier film roles include Munich, Enduring Love, Layer Cake, The Mother, Road to Perdition, and Some Voices. He has also recently completed filming on Jim Sheridan’s Dream House, Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, and Jon Favreau’s Cowboys & Aliens.
ROONEY MARA will appear this fall in David Fincher’s The Social Network.

So glad to see a fresh face in this role.
Sony is doing what Universal did with Scott Pilgrim. Craig has had trouble headlining outside the Bond franchise (Golden Compass killed the Dark Materials franchise) just as Michael Cera hasn’t had a hit outside of a Judd Apatow film.
Both films cast unknowns in a franchise that has a lot of buzz but isn’t known in the mainstream just yet. Sony should have cast Natalie Portman, Ellen Page or Zoe Saldana; actresses who can head up huge franchises and who’ve earned several billion dollars in receipts.
A year from now Sony will be scratching its head at why the buzz from Dragon doesn’t translate into ticket sales.
Having just seen the Swedish version of GWTDT last night, I despair for any Hollywood remake. Ugh! Please—no Hollywood starlets. They should have trolled all the local kick-boxing clubs to find a legitimate bad-ass and then determined her acting ability. Lisbeth is on the autism spectrum, so there is no need for acting school finesse—just a need for physical presence and a gut checking sense of reality, IMO.
UNBELIEVABLE!nDoes hollywood have to destroy it all?
Bad call. As anyone who has actually read the books will know, Ellen Page was the only choice for this role.
Hahahahaha. Oh, wait – you were joking, right? I quite like Ellen Page as an actress, but she really would’ve been miscast here. As would’ve been just about anyone other than a veritable unknown. She’s necessarily all mystery.
Only thing is, how’re they going to get around the rather uncinematic, somewhat boringly procedural parts of the second and third books? I mean, the characters are great fun and the books are a good read, but most of the second and third books involve people talking on cell phones, going to a different location to gather some new bit of information, get a piece of information on a cell phone, then go to a different location (though a certain death midway through “Hornet’s Nest” was pretty bad-ass).
Congratulations! Yours is the first ridiculous thought I’ve heard or read today. But it’s so strongly ridiculous, I’m confident it’s going to hold up as the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard or read all day come evening time.
They are using fake accents, filming in Sweden and basically retreading the Swedish film? Bleh. I haven’t seen the other 2 swedish sequels, so I’ll stick to those, and skip the American version. It’s too bad Natalie Portman wasn’t able to buy the franchise early on.
The books were about Lisbeth first and foremost, but as usual in H’wood they cast a big male star and spent a few thousand on The Girl. They really needed a name for Lisbeth, someone who can hold up a three pic franchise. Oh well, all the best to them.
Yeah, the “Swedish Chef” accents are gonna sink this thing. Ridiculous. Although in fairness, the book is ridiculous.
HA! I read and loved the book… Ellen Page would’ve ruined it. She is just awful. Good call Fincher!
Ellen Page would have been the worst. She is void of sensuality, sexuality or any kind of intrigue at all. Im not sure you read the books.
Exactly. Not just physically, but she actually has the capacity to reach the level of intensity that’s needed for Lisbeth. Has no one in Hollywood seen ‘Hard Candy’? She was prepping for the role of Lisbeth since she was 17. She was perfect.
Ugh . Either one is cast wrong . This is headed to be a bomb and they won’t make all three
I used to like Ellen Page since i first saw he in Hard Candy. She rocked that role. But as time have passed and she did more movies it’s clearly now that she is just the more talented version of Kristen Stewart. She can play only one role in every movie.
Like Jennifer Aniston plays different versions of Rachel in her every movie – Ellen plays different version of herself. Juno, Whip it, Smart People, Inception and others…. She has same hair, same voice, same make up, same face expressions. If she would be cast here then it would be “smarter Juno goes dark”. It’s like if Jesse Eisenberg would be cast as Howard Hughes in Aviator instead of DiCaprio… Would he look like Howard Hughes or like Jesse Eisenberg?
The Sequel to “A Nightmare on Elm Street” is officially dead.
Sony gets their Spiderman and Salander from the actor’s performances in the Social Network. I am really interested in this movie now!
slightly disapointing but whatever….its done.
This film better be Fincher all the way because none of the casting blows any wind in my sails.
perfect fit – looking forward to this
Me too, Digger. This is going to have to be one bad ass little bee-otch!!! Daniel Craig as Blomkvich is a good choice as well.
*Daniel Craig as Blomkvist* Too excited over this to type.
Never mind “Dragon Tattoo.” How good must “The Social Network” be if Sony gives two relative unknowns who star in that film two of their future mega-franchises? Garfield as Spidey and now Mara as Salander. Oct. 1st cannot come fast enough!
Not me. Social Network doesn’t have the pizzaz of 21. Movies computer databases aren’t fun unless they have guys in neon unitards driving very cool motorcyles. Tron will wipe the floor with social network. Yeesh, even the title is a dull as beans.
This is a mistake. Truly.
Why does she have to look like the girl in the previous film? Makes no sense. As described in the book it could have been any of those girls listed above.
Boo x2. Kristen Bell was Elisabeth Salander. Fail.
Congrats to 2010 Popcorn N Roses Rising Stars honoree Rooney Mara! We knew she’d be going places, and this pretty much proves it! I for one think she’s perfect for the role, although Ellen Page would have been decent as well…
No! What did Fincher see in her while shooting “The Social Network”?
I still don’t know why, if they wanted an unknown actress, they didn’t just hire the Swedish actress who already played her. Have you seen her pictures, she’s perfect.
Catee, the reason for not going with the Swedish actress is 1) She’s 31 years old, a bit old for the character. 2) Noomi Rapace, who portrade Lisbeth said she doesn’t want revisit the role anymore she’s moved on.
She’s too old now.
She has said that she doesn’t want to play the part anymore.
Great choice! If it can’t be Noomi Rapace, she is the next best one.
Meh…not really impressed with the casting of this film. Of course, I wasn’t really impressed by the actors of the Swedish versions of this series either. I have faith in Fincher so hopefully this will be entertaining.
Well if she has the acting chops for the role then I’m in agreement. I’m glad the director went with an unknown actress. The movie will sell itself.
Bullshit. This is bullshit. She is too soft for this role….physically and mentally. Amy Pascal, you sold the women out, and let the man cast the typically sexy girl….shame on you!
Are we going to continue to ignore the fact that “Tattoo” is a horrible book to begin with?
Maybe Fincher will make it interesting, but the book is turgid, overwritten and other than a couple of “shocking” scenes, entirely uneventful and utterly implausible.
I haven’t read the book. But I thought your description of it was a pretty accurate assessment of the movie.
It was uneventful, not terribly original and loaded with exposition once we got to the central mystery. Apart from the original and interseting setting, to me it played like a made-for-TV movie.
Bleah, your opinion, thankfully, is in the slim minority. “Horrible?” Read J.D. Robb aka Nora Roberts if you want horrible. Better than Robb/Roberts, Patterson, Koontz, Parker (and I like Parker). It takes a strong reader to consider literature originating in someplace other than the U.S. But, at least you tried. That more than most.
TOLDJA!
Robin Wright To Play Daniel Craig’s Lover In ‘Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’
Erm, no…
Good to see Deadline scoooped two ‘exclusives’ on the casting for *one* part.
I guess if you throw enough mud at the wall…
Erm, no. The headline is correct. Robin Wright was cast as Daniel Craig’s lover, Erika Berger. If you’d had bothered to read the story, you’d have known that.
It wasn’t for the same part. Read the article.
Um, read the book.
You’re an idiot. Get your facts straight before throwing mud. Robin Wright plays the magazine publisher and occasional lover, not the hacker. Men have been known to have sex with more than one woman.
Erm, how about you RTFA? Robin Wright is going to play Erika Berger, not Lisbeth.
Wait, her first name is Rooney? Being a Steelers fan I’m happy. But why is it when these great female roles come up, they pick an unknown, but for the male roles, they pick established actors? Money? Easier to control? Hmmm??? Why is it they had to sign the contract just to be able to test???
It’s about money, first and foremost. The unknown will not get points and will not command a huge salary. That kind of thinking turns off female filmgoers who stayed away in droves from Scott Pilgrim.
Good choice.
I’m sorry, I love Ellen Page but you need a girl with a face that can be mean and attractive at the same time. Plus you need a girl who’s rapier thin but that can fight back. From that pic she looks like the complete package for the role.
The reason they didn’t cast the same actor who starred in the Swedish version is that she didn’t want to play the role again.
I am glad they cast a relative unknown in the role. There is no way that Ellen Page (too perky), ScarJo (too voluptuous), Natalie Portman (too old), or Kristen Bell (too blonde) would have worked.
And for all those supporters of the above who think I am wrong…Lisbeth is supposed to be a small, angular, flat chested woman. Noomi played her well (despite the changes made to the storyline within the movie) and would have been a good choice for the part. However I would rather see an actress who doesn’t have as much celebaggage (celebrity baggage) get the part.
