UPDATE: Sony Pictures Entertainment has issued a press release on Mara. I’ve included it after Deadline’s story break.
EXCLUSIVE: Ending one of the most drawn out and closely watched casting searches for an actress in years, Sony Pictures Entertainment and director David Fincher have chosen Rooney Mara to play Lisbeth Salander in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, the film that begins shooting this fall in Sweden, with Daniel Craig starring. The film will be released December 21, 2011. Rooney was considered Fincher’s first choice in the process: the director had just helmed her in The Social Network. Closing a deal will amount to a formality, because Mara essentially agreed to terms when she and other young actresses signed on to tests that Fincher and producer Scott Rudin have conducted over the past several weeks. Her deal includes an option for two sequels that will cover The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest, the second and third books in the Millennium Trilogy by the late author Stieg Larsson. The books continue the same murder conspiracy storyline.
Deadline revealed that Craig was signed a deal with two options weeks ago to play Mikael Blomkvist, the investigative journalist and part owner of the magazine Millennium, and Deadline also broke the story that Robin Wright was in talks to play Erika Berger, his occasional bed partner and the publisher of Millennium. Stellan Skarsgard was also reportedly in talks to play Martin Vanger, who joins the magazine’s board.
The search for Salander has been the role that really captured the public fancy. Slight of frame and short, Salander is a brilliant but troubled computer hacker who helps Blomkvist unravel a decades-long murder mystery. The storyline is as dark as the subject matter that Fincher tackled in Seven, and subsequent books establish Salander as far more than Blomkvist’s sidekick (and occasional lover).
While established actresses have been named as being in contention for the role — Natalie Portman (who tried to buy the books early on), Ellen Page (who filmed her own test), Carey Mulligan and most recently Scarlett Johansson — Fincher has focused his testing process on discovering an actress who fits Salander physically and in age proximity, which is early 20s. Mara was among a group of young actresses that included Alice In Wonderland star Mia Wasikowska, Sucker Punch’s Emily Browning (even though neither actress signed test deals), Fish Tank’s Katie Jarvis. Mara tested along with Sophie Lowe, Sarah Snook and French actress Lea Seydoux.
Mara is a strong match: she is the right age and looks like Salander. She also had the advantage of working with Fincher and Rudin on The Social Network. The sister of Brokeback Mountain‘s Kate Mara and the great granddaughter of New York Giants football team founder Wellington Mara and Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney, Mara was most recently seen in the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. Mara is repped by WME.
(Culver City, August 16, 2010) — Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara have been cast in the lead roles of Columbia Pictures’ three-picture adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s literary blockbuster The Millennium Trilogy under the direction of David Fincher. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo – the first film of the series, which also includes The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest – begins shooting next month in Sweden. The screenplay is written by Steve Zaillian and the film is being produced by Scott Rudin, Cean Chaffin, Ole Sondberg and Søren Stærmose. Mikael Wallen and Anni Fernandez are executive producers. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is set for worldwide release December 21, 2011.
The Millennium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson has been published in 44 countries and has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide thus far. In the U.S. alone, the series has sold over 10 million copies, and the sales were recently calculated at the remarkable rate of one book per second. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo has broken sales records in virtually every country in which it has been published. It has sold over 5 million copies in the U.S. and has out-sold any other e-book in that rapidly expanding market. A literary phenomenon, all three books currently sit atop the New York Times Best Seller lists. In describing the scale of Larsson’s achievement, The Economist said: “Stieg Larsson’s vivid characters, the depth of the detail across the three books, the powerfully imaginative plot, and the sheer verve of the writing make the trilogy a masterpiece of its genre.” Michiko Kakutani, of The New York Times, described the Lisbeth character: “Lisbeth Salander, Stieg Larsson’s fierce pixie of a heroine, is one of the most original characters in a thriller to come along in a while – a gamin, Audrey Hepburn look-alike but with tattoos and piercings, the take-no-prisoners attitude of Lara Croft and the cool, unsentimental intellect of Mr. Spock. She is the vulnerable victim turned vigilante; a willfully antisocial girl . . . who has proved herself to be as incandescently proficient as any video game warrior.” The three novels have all become #1 worldwide bestsellers, an achievement unrivaled in trade book publishing.
DAVID FINCHER most recently directed this fall’s much-anticipated The Social Network for Columbia Pictures, which opens in the U.S. on October 1st.
DANIEL CRAIG recently starred in the two highest-grossing films in the James Bond franchise, Quantum of Solace and Casino Royale. His earlier film roles include Munich, Enduring Love, Layer Cake, The Mother, Road to Perdition, and Some Voices. He has also recently completed filming on Jim Sheridan’s Dream House, Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, and Jon Favreau’s Cowboys & Aliens.
ROONEY MARA will appear this fall in David Fincher’s The Social Network.

Glad to see that Sony and Fincher recognize that audiences are tired of age-and-look-inappropriate casting. A movie goer’s absorption into a film’s milieu is NOT aided by the suspension of disbelief made necessary by out-of-left-field, wrong-headed casting choices.
Well since it is a Fincher project we can now sit back and in a few years Christopher Nolan will have stolen either the story and/or the ambiance of this picture to make his next new cutting edge action whatever.
@Mrs. Boofink,
Is that some kind of ridiculous internet meme, or are you stupid enough to come up with that on your own?
There are plenty of directors Nolan has flagrantly ripped off (or “paid homage to”), I don’t see the Fincher connection.
But that’s some mighty fine trollin’ you’re doing! Keep up the good work!
On behalf of everyone in Europe, may I ask “Rooney Who?”?
My girlfriend has just said, “But young talents need to get a chance.” She is so right, as always. Even so, it will make the film a tougher sell in those territories where the original has already played well, what with the inevitable comparisons to the incomparable Rapace.
I haven’t seen her act so I can’t comment.
And I think I’m the only one who was underwhelmed by The Social Network trailer. It didn’t appeal to me. To each their own, I guess.
Wow! Great choice. Bravo Fincher. If it had been up to the studio it would have been Ellen or that blond girl. For all you folks who will say it was up to the studio, no it wasn’t. Fincher would not have done it without his choice.
Bravo bravo bravo.
Thank you.
Wait, isn’t Rooney Mara the same actress that got universally trashed for her performance in the Nightmare On Elm Street remake?
THIS.
This girl is another blue blood, like Kate Bosworth who never needed to make another penny to live a Paris Hilton type life. Her grandfather owns the NY Giants.
The rich get richer.
You’re right. It’s a tough pill to swallow, and honestly, is a bit disappointing. There’s no way Rooney Mara the best actress for this role. I’m not contending that she will be unwatchable, but I find it impossible not to suspect the Maras had some sort of influence in this decision. Good luck to all.
There’s no reason a socialite can’t play a tough juvenile delinquint. They’ll just give her lots of Avril Lavigne liner and ripped up designer jeans. It’ll be like Gossip Girl Goes Swedish, fun, eh?
By the way, did anyone see her in Nightmare on Elm Street? Yikes. Let’s pray that she gets some acting lessons before shooting Dragon Tattoo.
Way to go Rooney! I’m happy that it’s a fresh face.
Re earlier post, Robin Wright Penn plays Erika, the editor at Millennium magazine and Blomkvist’s long-time lover who is married to a husband who tolerates the ongoing infidelity.
This trilogy is the shizz-ilogy! Fincher is going to nail this, can’t wait. Having devoured Dragon flick and then other two books, I don’t understand those who don’t think there are movies there. The star in the NY Times bestseller list.
This is such a “me too” project. The original movies are good. They should just dub them and give them wider distribution & bigger marketing push
WHO?!?! I’ve never even heard of this chick!! I know I’m not gonna waste my time on this film when it comes out. I’ll see the original in it’s sub-titled and much better quality glory!!
I love how people can judge a film before it’s even been made. Geesh..
For the person who said Bell was “Too Blond”, she has died her hair previously for movie roles and has been a convincing brunette. She is also a brunette in the upcoming “Burlesque”.
“. . . a convincing brunette.”
And that’s not an easy role to pull off–even with Miss Clairol coaching you!
Well then, how about “too cross-eyed”?
Bell could have nailed this role in her sleep. Look at Spartan, Deadwood, Veronica Mars. She looks younger than she is, she’s got acting chops to spare. Too bad she wasn’t a trust fund baby like Rooney Mara.
for the Steelers fan who loves the name ‘Rooney’ her mother is the daughter of the steelers owner and her dad is one of the owners of the NY Giants…so to sum it all up..Rooney Mara is the daughter of a billionaire.
why do americans need to make remakes of everything? The swedish version is awesome.. swedish film makers create very dark and somber ambiances which is suitable for the story.. hollywood will ruin it. If you don’t understand, read subtitles like the rest of the world that watches your movies.
OK. So first you claim that Americans ruin everything. And then you say the rest of the world watches our films with subtitles. If we ruin everything, why does the world continue to watch our “trash?”
No need to blame the audience… blame the studios for not having enough faith in their audiences.
Very few films with subtitles get wide distribution in the first place, but it certainly hasn’t affected those that have. Both ‘Inglorious Basterds’ and ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ pulled in 9-digits despite warnings from critics that audiences would stay away because of the subtitles.
The originals are pretty great and Rapace is an excellent Salander (hell, I like ALL the casting in the originals – except the guy who plays Zalachenko, but maybe that’s the make-up) and the American version won’t take anything away from that. I LOVE the Nakata “Ringu,” but I also LOVE the Naomi Watts remake. If we accept that most Americans aren’t going to watch subtitles and there’s money to be made on a great series of stories if they’re shot in English, why not get it to the widest audience possible? Larsson (R.I.P.) said at the beginning that he was creating something that he knew would “make a million dollars.” This is entertainment!
We hear you but why don’t you reserve judgement until the American version comes out. Once you see it then criticize on how bad the remake was.
I am a huge fan of Andrew Garfield, I don’t know anything about Rooney Mara, but I assume she is good if David Fincher cast her. As far as Sony taking a chance on unkowns for their two big franchises, it is not out of the kindness of their hearts or their love of artistic integrity.. It is about money. They are gambling that the material matters more than star power, which I hope is true, but in the end they are just being cheap. No back end to pay, no big salaries = more money for them. Mark Webb couldn’t have cost them much, but Fincher did.
Bobmcbob-what did you see in her while shooting the social network?
M’eh, so, a mega-trust-fund girl gets to play Lisbeth — I hope she can act…
Don’t who would be best but Christina Ricci comes to mind… thanks goodness it’s not Portman though, whew.
She was awful in Nightmare. This series is sunk if the title girl doesn’t captivate audiences. Red flags all over the place on this project.
Okay, David, it’s your call, Rock out! Show us watcha got dude!
As some have pointed out, Rooney Mara’s performance in NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET was panned, and is indeed really terrible. She’s going to be useless here. Remember when Verhoeven cast Elizabeth Berkeley in SHOWGIRLS? I wonder why he did that?
I’m amused at all the people who think Ellen Page would have been a bad choice–go rent HARD CANDY and reconsider your position.
As for the “frenzy” over this role, it just goes to show how few great roles are out there for women.
Oh great. Finally the Anakin Skywalker of the modern era has been cast. Insert sarcasm. So that means that now they will finally stop write 10 stories a week about this movie that no one will see.
December release? They dream about big awards? But here i’m confused. If they are already planning two sequels then they are sure that the first one will bring whole lot of money? But didn’t the failure of Scot Piligrim or Kick-Ass, Killers and many other movies teach them that Internet overhype does not mean box-office success.
They can write 10 000 stories on the movie sites, have critics respect… but no one will come to see this movie. Because the premise is boring. I read it, i saw the Swedish trailer and i have zero interest to watch this movie. And then they cast unknown actress and Daniel Craig. Who is great but he didn’t had any box-office hits outside Bond movies.
Good Luck to you The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Sent our greetings to Australia and Nine when you’ll meet them
Hey first poster, I’ve read the books – Ellen Page would NOT have made a good Lisbeth. She’s too tomboy-ish (but maybe you like that?), too short, and not sexy enough. I don’t know if the girl they ended up casting is the perfect choice either, but better than Ellen Page. I would’ve thought Natalie Portman a better choice, but even then….
Should have been Kristen Stewart. Just saying.
