Days after Deadline revealed Ryan Reynolds was front runner for the Safe House role chased by every hot young actor in town, the actor is now negotiating to play the young CIA agent who must transport a dangerous criminal (Washington) to safety after both are attacked at a safe house. The Universal drama is directed by Daniel Espinosa and produced by Scott Stuber.
CAA is negotiating not only the deal, but how to fit the film into an array of plum projects that came to Reynolds after last summer’s breakout trifecta of The Proposal, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and landing the hotly contested title role of Green Lantern in the Martin Campbell-directed film.
Reynolds, who’ll next be seen in the Rodrigo Cortes-directed thriller Buried–he is in every frame of the movie, trapped underground in a coffin beneath the sand in Iraq–will start work in October in The Change-Up, the David Dobkin-directed Universal pic. If they can make a deal, Safe House follows early next year.
After that, Reynolds expects to make either Deadpool, the Fox spinoff featuring the wisecracking, indestructible character he played in X-Men: Wolverine, or the supernatural pic RIPD for Universal, which is zeroing in on a director. Reynolds wants to make both, so one film likely follows the other. In between, Reynolds will be the centerpiece of an extensive promotional tour to launch Green Lantern, which Warner Bros releases June 17, 2011. Then, there is a Green Lantern sequel that the studio has targeted for a 2012 start date and 2013 release. Reynolds’ Dark Trick Films, a producer on Buried, will also be a producer on Deadpool, a film that Robert Rodriguez is circling.

My God, that Green Lantern outfit looks stupid. Not since Schumacher put nipples on Batman…
that is not the suit idiot. catch up with the times. the real suit was revealed weeks ago.
It’s a fan pic dude.
Was the lame pic on the Entertainment Weekly cover a fan pic?
The vast majority love the look
I have not met one person who is a fan of this guy. Looks like he gets the job done though…
If that’s the case, you haven’t seen “Just Friends.” He kills in that movie. And even though “Smokin’ Aces” is kind of a bust, he’s badass in that flick.
I’m not a fan. He’s too smug
I am a fan….great actor….loved him in “Defintely, Maybe”
Defintely, Maybe is the best movie about divorce!! The story is intelligent, well thought of, and funny.
What are you frikin talking about? Ryan Reynolds is a star and half. Jealousy!!!
Very busy man. He is one of my favorite actors right now, consistently good. Can’t wait for Buried & Green Lantern.
And written by David Guggenheim. The reason actors are chasing the roles is because the script is brilliant, with characters that pop. After the film is shot, all credit to the director for making the film. Before the film is shot (i.e., now) all credit to the writer who created it.
Guggenheim’s script was utter crap. It’s depressing to think something so mediocre could net $400k in such a dismal marketplace…
Couldn’t agree more. I mean this in the most constructive way possible – this script was a terrible read and poorly written. This isn’t bitterness at all. Not every script produced is in Hollywood is good and my Lord does this script convey that. I’m dying to know what whomever’s producing found appealing about this story.
What’s the latest spec script to sell that you were impressed by? Not trying to argue, just looking to read something that a tough critic finds well done. Thanks in advance.
The script was a snooze-fest. 16 Blocks was a better read than this.
was going to say where does the dead pool film fit into Ryan work scedule what with green lantern and two sequals now this conveted role Ryan is going to be one busy guy.
I believe that photo of Reynolds as Green Lantern is a manip(ulation), not official.
Have loved Deadline since the beginning, but if I may offer a piece of a constructive criticism in your ever-expanding online presence: I would recommend that you research and only use official studio promotional stills/photos if at all possible, as the utilization of unofficial stills can create confusion among your readership (as evidenced already in this comments section). I’ve noticed this recently in your columns, for example, with last weekend’s box office story: the use of a fan-made poster for “The Expendables,” and reference to a thought-to-be official trailer that was actually *fan-made* (the one which urged viewers to “Make sure Julia Roberts doesn’t win.”)
Your rep could be upped a few notches beyond what you already are if you made sure to use official photos, etc. [I would also be willing to take a modest salary to be your copy editor!]
that’s brilliant casting. Reynolds and Denzel together? i’m there. huge fan of both.
First of all, Ryan Reynolds is a star, and is going to kill it in each and every role that is mentioned here. Also, he has a truly dedicated and awesome agent in Darren Statt. Not many agents can work schedules with studios and line producers the way he does. Hardest working man in the biz with AMAZING clients. Glad to see this happening for all involved.
Thank you, Darren Statt, you’re doing a great job on- and offline.
love ya man! But no thanks on the Deadpool spinoff. let it go.
Enough with the ritual “jealousy” mantras. People are entitled to have their own opinions.
Success could not come to a greater guy. Period.
