Like Seth MacFarlane isn’t busy enough already with TV and film and acting projects: the Family Guy creator told Jay Leno tonight he’s working on a music album for Universal Republic Records. “I had an offer to do an actual big band album and I took it. I said yes.” MacFarlane said the music consists of “swing arrangements of classic tunes. We kind of deliberately touched stuff that the Deans and the Franks and the Sammys didn’t do yet.” After the announcement MacFarlane took up the microphone and sang “Cream in My Coffee,” backed by The Tonight Show band. (Video below.) MacFarlane’s reps quickly followed up with info about the album. See press release:
Universal Republic Records has signed Television Executive Producer/Actor Seth MacFarlane, the multi-talented creator behind the hit Emmy winning FOX Animated Series Family Guy. MacFarlane will record and deliver a fully orchestrated album of 1940s and ‘50’s classic show tunes, scheduled to hit stores and online platforms later this year.
With his recent Emmy nomination for Music & Lyrics this year, MacFarlane felt that the timing was right to release his debut solo album. A music enthusiast, MacFarlane is known as one of the few showrunners in Hollywood who utilizes a complete orchestra and talented composers on a weekly basis to score his three animated shows, Family Guy, American Dad!, and The Cleveland Show. MacFarlane is also an experienced live performer, having played to sold out audiences at London’s Royal Albert Hall and New York’s Carnegie Hall, as well as lending his time and voice to numerous charity benefits.
MacFarlane stated that, “It’s rare in this day and age to have the opportunity to create an album that celebrates the classic, sophisticated sound of rich, lush swing orchestrations. It will be an absolute joy to sing this music, and I look forward to working with the entire team at Universal Republic on what we intend to make an exceptional project.”
The album will be produced and arranged by film and television composer, Joel McNeely. It will include the work of legendary songwriters such as Rodgers and Hammerstein and Lerner and Loewe among other talents from the ‘40’s and ‘50’s. All songs have been handpicked by MacFarlane to highlight the work of these great composers.
In addition to showtunes, the album will feature some original material, including the song ‘She’s Wonderful Too’ written by Joel McNeely for an episode of the Lucasfilms television series The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. Composed as a short piece for the show, MacFarlane and McNeely (with the blessing of George Lucas) composed additional lyrics and melodies to make a new and more complete song.
The production process for the album will reconstruct the techniques used in the great recordings of this era by utilizing a live orchestra and a big band playing together in the same room where MacFarlane will sing live. The album will be recorded in the legendary Capitol Records Recording Studio where Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Rosemary Clooney and many others recorded prolific albums. Great care is being given to replicate the same microphones, mic pre-amps and signal chains that those recordings used, and the record will be recorded to analog tape, to match the sound of those historic records.

Heard McFarlane play with ZaSu Pitts’s grandsons — John & Ralf Reynolds of the Hollywood Hotshots — and it was a hell of a fun night. If the album’s in the same spirit we’re in for some good music. Hope he goes all the way and releases it on vinyl!
You are dead on! His performances with the Hollywood Hotshots were fantastic – no better rendition of “Where or When” than Seth singing it with those guys. Vinyl has been gaining in popularity the last few years with serious collectors and I admit I have purchased a few myself. His voice absolutely lends itself to the image of the record spinning on the turntable…
Fascinating, Buble is a better singer and based on SNL… funnier. That song he sang on THE TONIGHT SHOW just now was awful.
NO match for Dave Damiani and his band
I was at the show in Royal Albert Hall and have heard him sing live several other times and I cannot wait to buy this album! His voice is perfect for this kind of music. He is a true talent and just what this age of modern music is missing.
Caught his act on the Tonight Show.
Very nice.
Got a real Kevin Spacey thing going.
This man is so amazingly talented. Is there anything he can’t do? Good for him.
saw him perform with maroon 5 for a haiti benefit at the roosevelt. was as hysterical as he was talented. top bloke, that guy!
I hope he quits his day job.
Hey, relax guy.
Bravo Seth, you talented son-of-a-bitch…. haha. Can’t wait to hear this album. You always are a man who demands perfection with every detail…. replicating the same mic / pre-amps…. badass!
Hats off to a very talented and creative guy. Guys like this make people envious and jealous, because pretty much anything this amazing guy throws his hand to he can do spectacularly. Good for him!
The dark, rich sound of “Music is better than words” brings all the elements of good music together. The live orchastra, the debonaire lyricists, and Jack Daniel’s, all combine to create an atmosphere of elegance and style that takes you on a ride through the heart and soul of the perfomer. With the release of his album, Seth is bringing back, to me, one of the best era’s in American history. The music style shaped the face of music today. The classic beauty of the music is intoxicating to the listener,it makes you feel, which is something that music nowadays is lacking…big time. Lost love, rekindled love, happiness, and sadness are sprinkled into these songs, but all have a lighthearted nature that keeps you hooked for hours. This record is a wonderful homage to that era. The orchestra is perfectly crafted to complement the strings, flutes and the elegant tempo throughout. Seth’s voice, one word, sexy. It’s warm, sultry, reminiscent of Sinatra, but not so much that you miss the elegance and unique charm of Mr. Macfarlane. His technique is out of this world, heavenly you might say. With the vibrato being on point and his melodies sung to perfection, this record will earn its place alongside Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra, without it feeling forced. I am happy to see such a powerful man in the industry bring back not only the best music of all time but the most enjoyable. With the combination of the RCA 44 Ribbon Microphone, the calf skin drum, and the fun of the live performance, Music is better than words, is what music is all about.
