EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures Entertainment has begun deal talks with Steve Zaillian to adapt The Girl Who Played With Fire, the second installment of the Millennium Trilogy of crime novels written by Stieg Larsson. Zaillian adapted The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, which SPE puts into production this fall after director David Fincher and producer Scott Rudin end the well-publicized search for an actress to play the troubled genius computer hacker Lisbeth Salander. Like Daniel Craig, that actress will sign a deal with two options covering The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest. Craig is playing journalist Mikael Blomkvist.
While Zaillian continues to hone the script for the first film (he is also exec producer), the studio wants him to move right on to The Girl Who Played With Fire. SPE wants to move quickly into production on the sequel, though start dates will have to be scheduled around Craig’s commitments to the James Bond franchise, and a potential sequel to Cowboys And Aliens.
The studio and filmmakers have reason to feel bullish: the pace of book sales of Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy has become a phenomenon reminiscent of book-to-movie blockbusters like J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga and Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code. The trilogy Larsson completed before dying of a heart attack at age 50 has sold over 27 million copies in 40 countries but has really taken off this summer in America. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo recently became the first book to pass the million mark for Amazon’s Kindle device, and Larsson’s trilogy–published in the U.S. by Knopf– holds all three top spots on Amazon’s current bestseller list.
The books have so far sold 7 million copies in the U.S.–not including e-books–and show no sign of tailing off. The filmmakers are confident an audience of rabid readers will show up when SPE releases the first film December 21, 2011, a major reason there is little concern over the previously released subtitled Swedish adaptation of Larsson’s books.
It makes sense that SPE wants the Oscar-winning scribe Zaillian back for an encore. Both Potter and Twilight have been able to balance quality with speed by having the same screenwriter from start to finish. Steve Kloves has scripted all but one of the Harry Potter films for Warner Bros, while Melissa Rosenberg has scripted all five Twilight Saga films for Summit Entertainment. WME is making Zaillian’s deal.

Can’t believe we still don’t know who Salander will be! Thought for sure Sunday was just one last formality and they would come to a quick decision after that. Does this mean the rumored Fincher vs Rudin/Pascal battle rages on? I’m rooting for Rooney Mara too, David!
I just saw the moving The Girl Who Played with Fire in New York. I saw the movie the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo months ago. I don’t understand this article?
You saw the Swedish version (with subtitles) of the book….this article is talking about the American studio version.
I find it sad that we have to do a Hollywood remake of these already amazing works. Do we possess so little imagination that we can only appreciate a work if it has been translated into a souped up American version? Watch the Swedish movies! If you loved the books you will find them very satisfying.
I love the books and the Swedish movies are fine as stand-alone films but very poor adaptations. I have high hopes Fincher can do better.
Evan Rachel Wood for Lisbeth Salander!
Rooney Mara was completely and utterly awful in the “Nightmare” remake. She couldn’t carry the film, was wooden and she didn’t play the role in a way where you wanted to root for her.
It also sucks for her she got out acted by Katie Cassidy and Cassidy died about 25 mins in.
She doesn’t need to bring her brand of wooden acting to this complex role. Get someone else. If they are going to go the silly CW lame actor route, for that cast Jessica Biel… I don’t get how Rooney is a front runner.
Now her sister, she is the far better actor.
Watch her in anything other than “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (wherein, by the way, her character is supposed to be “wooden”) and you will see she is a fantastic actor. Try “Dare”. She is also creating a ton of buzz in the upcoming “Tanner Hall” and Fincher’s own “The Social Network” too. They probably are able to look beyond one bad role to see her potential. Wish some people on the internet could do the same.
You are telling me to judge her acting from an independent movie and a movie that hasn’t come out.
You see, her highest grossing movie was the “Nightmare” remake. That is what she is known for. That is what she will continue to be known for until she finally wow’s everyone and stars in a bigger film.
But until then, she is the girl who couldn’t carry a horror movie. A simple task especially when the villain is a disgusting pedophile molesting killer.
I read the script. It didn’t call for wooden acting. And any actor who is a good one can make even the most bullcrap badly written character come to life.
She didn’t try. Sorry. Hire someone else with talent.
You are saying she has no talent based on one movie that is not her best. You can refuse to see her in anything else and just base your opinion on one crappy horror movie, that’s your prerogative, but thankfully David Fincher is not hiring actors based on watching whatever their “highest grossing” movie is. Until you decide to open your mind and do more research, your opinion that she has no talent is pretty much invalid.
And I hear he’s adapting from the books and not remaking the Swedish movies. Thank God for that.
Charlotte Lapidite is *perfect* for the role. Mysterious, beautiful with a weathered soul. Charlotte for Lisbeth!!
The swedish movies were not very good imo. I hope these movies turn out better
There is only one Lisbeth Salander and her name is Evan Rachel Wood. If you want to know what Lisbeth should and will look like check out SuicideGirls.com site.
I just finished the first novel and aside from the Salander character, it was underwhelming. If Zaillian can fix the last 200 pages, he’s a great writer, indeed.
Zaillian is untouchable.
I’m so anxious. I really don’t want Rooney mara as lisbeth. The only reason why she is in the running is because she knows the director from working with him on another movie. She would be a terrible choice. I’m fine with any of the potential candidates except for her.
That is just flat out wrong because he has worked with plenty of young actresses, including Kristen Stewart and the 6 or 7 that are in The Social Network along with Rooney. He wants Rooney for a reason.
I love rooney mara for lisbeth salander she’s perfect and such a great actress so far i can’t wait to see the next two films…and rooney mara your such a great actress keep doing a great job at entertaining your fans and please ignore the haters!!! Can’t wait to see more of your work in the future goodluck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
