EXCLUSIVE: As part of its push in scripted comedy, Spike TV ordered two half-hour pilots earlier this year, Back Nine and Playing with Guns. After seeing the completed pilots, the cable network has decided to pass on both. While this is rare, it’s not unprecedented. Last year, Showtime passed on all 4 pilots it ordered: Possible Side Effects, the L Word spinoff, The End of Steve and Ronna and Beverly. Spike has two other comedy projects in development, Rebel League and Fort Bush, which were announced in May. The network also ordered presentation Kings By Night.
Here is what a Spike TV spokesperson said when asked for comment: “Spike TV is actively pursuing the next great scripted series (either comedy or drama) for men. We are thrilled with our successful younger-skewing comedy, Blue Mountain State, and now look to expand our audience with older guys. With that in mind, we feel Back Nine and Playing With Guns aren’t the right projects for us to move forward with right now. But we will have some development news to announce in the next few weeks. Stay tuned.”

Wow, these pilots must really suck if Spike decided to renew Blue Mountain State instead.
Good. Back Nine was inflammatory garbage.
What happened to the Boston mob pilot that UFC boss Dana White said he was developing for the network?
Both scripts were horrible so no surprise here. Stick to reality Spike. Your scripted is pathetic.
playing with guns was a good script… just because they didn’t buy your shitty pitch don’t hate. Try logo TV.
You tell’em “double ugh”! Why Spike bash when you can gay bash? Right?
Back Nine was hysterical. Spike’s loss.
They didn’t even shoot their funniest script, a sort of satirical fight club idea from Happy Madison. Then again, to come up with a companion for Blue Mountain State you’ve got to come up with another terrible show.
Spike shouldn’t have bailed on “Factory” It was hilarious – one of the funniest cable shows ever. I still miss it.
Ugh- I actually read Back Nine and Playing w/ Guns. They were both solid. I wonder where they’ll end up…
Disagree. Blue Mountain State is one of the funniest comedies on TV.
Every guy I know who’s in college or recently out loves Blue Mountain State. Nothing wrong with a network knowing it’s audience. And you’ve got to admit the show has some balls. Literally and figuratively.
@ Marcia. Agreed. BMS is hilarious. Haven’t read Back Nine, but Playing With Guns was great.
I was one of the mixers on “Playing with Guns”, and I’m surprised it didn’t get picked up.
I really liked the pilot, and think the show had a LOT of potential.
John Schneider, Semore Cassell, Miguel Nunez Jr…my guess is Spike exceeded it’s meager budget, too bad…it would’ve addressed all it’s concerns – Birdie!
So glad they passed on Back Nine…
