EXCLUSIVE: In a seven-figure preemptive bid, Warner Bros has acquired film rights to a science fiction trilogy that David Goyer is writing with Michael Cassutt. Deal calls for Goyer to adapt Heaven’s Shadow, the first of the three books, He will produce through his Phantom Four banner. Deal closed on Friday.
The trilogy begins when an object is discovered heading for earth. Initial panic gives way to a competition between governments to be first to intercept what they believe is a breakaway meteor. What the astronauts discover leads to an encounter with alien forces that are a threat to humanity. It is the first book that Goyer has written and last spring, he set it at the Penguin imprint Ace Books to be published in July, 2011. Heaven’s War and Heaven’s Fall will be released in subsequent summers. The studio bought the book series after Goyer pitched it, as Goyer and his co-author are still working on the prose.
Goyer confirmed to Deadline that he’d made the rights deal with Warner Bros.
“It’s a perfect project for Warner Bros and I’ve obviously enjoyed a long and fruitful working relationship with the studio,” said Goyer.
For Warner Bros, Goyer’s has recently racked up either script or story credit on Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, the untitled next installment of the Batseries, and Superman: Man of Steel, a reinvention of the venerable DC Comics hero that’s being godfathered by Chris Nolan. CAA reps Goyer.

#14 Alien invasion movie to be announced.
hmmmm let’s see, I think that makes zombies still 3 movies ahead of vampires and alien invasions so there’s still room for more.
Similar set-up: Rendezvous with the RAMA by A. C. Clarke. When that will be made?
This was years ago, but back then Morgan Freeman’s shingle had the the rights to it. I thought they were developing it, but it must have fallen through.
I just watched an episode from the show ‘The Dialogue’ where Goyer said he’d NEVER be able to write Superman cos it is so far from his mentality. Interesting change of hearts.
Writing Flash Forward was far from his mentality…
Crash, burn.
I’m sure that at the time he didn’t think he could write Superman. Then inspiration struck, and he came up with some angle that appealed to him.
Happens all the time. You can’t predict inspiration.
that is true. anyway I am fan of his, so no offense.
so on top of all the story’s and screen play’s he’s commissioned to write for the studios, he’s got time to write books?
christ, what does he do for fun? design hadron collider’s?
It’s a lot easier when you’re being paid to write a novel. I am sure his success as a screenwriter and the first chapter (or three) of the book helped his book agent secure a healthy advance in a time when book advances are diminishing.
The Superman film is going to be so terrible. So, so terrible. Written by a guy who is overworked and self-admittedly has no feel for the character. Most likely to be directed by a novice willing to work cheap. Alan Horn had no intention of making the movie and didn’t want to make it, but is being forced to by the courts. They won’t do a full origin story reboot, because then they would have to pay mondo $$$ to the heirs for rights use of the origin elements that DC lost in the lawsuit. The new film won’t be sequel to the vomit-inducing Superman Returns, nor a long overdue reboot. Instead it will exist in another state of confusion, like the awful Superman Returns itself. The company’s lack of faith in the movie is reflected in the much diminished allotted budget. They are spending as little a possible on their expected flop. The recipe is adding up to a big pile of crap.
The new Superman film is going to be terrible.
What’s the allotted budget for this film?
Yep. Chris Nolan has a history of associating himself with crappy, no-hope projects.
Now, where’s the smiley face that’s rolling his eyes?
It’s not Nolan’s project. (Read Nolan’s LA Times interview). It’s David Goyer’s and he has a history with a lot of crap.
Warners is pulling a little slight of hand in hyping the tenuous Nolan connection. Nolan completely focuses on one project at a time, and that project will be Batman3. Superman isn’t even going to cross his mind.
read what nikki wrote. ‘goyer is writing with michael cassutt’…which means cassutt is writing the book.
7 figures and he’s still “WRITING” it? It’s not even done??? Why not just make the screenplay??? I wonder if he made the synopsis/treatment for the movie before he began the novel. No wonder why I can never get any bites from Warner Bros…they hire the writers they’ve worked with over and over…At least when they do bite, I’ll be “in” with them for awhile.
Wonder how F Scott Fitzgerald’s novels would’ve turned out if $money$ was the motivation.
sir arthur conan doyle wrote Sherlock Holmes for money, he hated the character, but that has still proved to be pretty popular…
There are so many great sci-fi novels out there that would make awesome films. I’m sure they will be made in future as many of them have been unfilmable up to now due to technical limitations.
Goyer seems to have lucked out here pitching an unwritten book series but I suppose he must be a pretty good pitcher by now.
Good luck to him, it may be fantastic. We need more sci-fi.
Good on him. He is an excellent story man but sadly writes dialouge so on-the-nose he should just have the characters turn and talking to the audiance! THe holls know he has mad writing skills and have done for years, so its no wonder WB would option this… as someone else would have!
While I am sure this is exciting news for Mr. Goyer – I really just want some details on Batman 3 and the new Superman flick. I refuse to be a hater – and I want to be excited about both projects. I’m just ready for a few details already!!! Anyone with me on that?
