ABC’s new drama No Ordinary Family, about an ordinary family whose members develop special powers, faced inevitable comparisons to previous genre shows and movies. Star Michael Chiklis stressed, “This is not Heroes. It is not The Incredibles. This is No Ordinary Family.” He also dismissed the show being labeled sci-fi. “At its core, it’s a drama about a family that is trying to work through issues. My kids watched the pilot with me and loved it. If you want some violence, watch my previous show,” he quipped, referring to FX’s cop drama The Shield.
Family co-creator/executive producer Greg Berlanti said that, unlike shows structured in the current environment “to appeal to a niche audience, we wanted to make something that the entire family can watch.” He described the series as “a fun throwback to old action shows blended with a family show with a lot of heart.”

It’s not “Heroes” or “The Incredibles”, it just sounds exactly like them.
Yeah, it’s neither of those, it’s Fantastic Four. Right down to the “cloudy” origin.
Save the network, save the world.
The best part of the show outside of Chiklis is Romany Malco. When will an exec producer with some real vision give this guy a shot to headline his own single-cam comedy or a film. Dude is hilarious.
The pilot is awful. Truly awful. I bet it’s among the first shows canceled (or “pulled until a later date” since official cancellations seem to almost never happen anymore).
Berlanti is a well-spoken and incredibly nice guy. He’s also a total hack who at the best of times does an okay job. Expect nothing but mediocrity from No Ordinary Family; the premise alone, cut and pasted from far more imaginative properties, should be a good indication of the originality of this show. That is to say, there will be none.
you know times are tough when the best berlanti and chiklis can do is a rehash.
series smells of one of those NBC movies o’ the week.
Romany Malco is amazing.
Save NBC, Save the World!
If you want some entertainment, watch another show.
Actually, it’s “Daddio” with a cape.
Because The Incredibles didn’t appeal to the entire family?
Hint: if your show is already drawing nervous comparisons, especially to something widely successful in part for its originality, you’re already in trouble.
The Shield remains the best teevee series in the history of the medium. Chiklis has earned a lifetime pass, and can do all the family shid he wants…
Really hoping for a movie or new series following up on Vic Mackey, after his three year stint with I.C.E., though.
Oh. who cares where they stole the idea??? At least it isn’t another cop drama. On the other hand, given the recent management change, and based on the promos I’ve seen, and the track record of one of the showrunners, this flea-bitten dog will be off the air in 4 episodes.
Romany is going to steal the show.
He is the FUNNIEST actor in the game.
So it’s “The Greatest American Hero Family.”
Matthew got it right. Berlanti is a charismatic schlockmeister (see “Life as We Know It”, “Broken Hearts Club”, “Everwood”, etc.). I wish him no ill will, but his worth seems extraordinarily overinflated.
