Diane Haithman is contributing to Deadline’s TCA coverage.
Sure, 19 Emmy nominations are nice – but Glee co-creators Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan realized another significant job perk recently: A pitch from Paul McCartney suggesting that Glee feature some of his songs. “I got a mix tape from Paul McCartney a couple of days ago. I thought I was being punked,“ Murphy said at TCA. “It just sort of came out of the blue, in a package, hand-written: ‘Hi ‘Ryan, I am hoping you would consider some of these songs for Glee. I was gobsmacked. I grew up with that guy.” Ryan added that
McCartney admires the show because it supports arts education, which is a draw for many artists hoping to have their songs covered by the Glee cast. “Our show is an ultimate pop culture fan letter to all of those artists,” Ryan said, adding that Glee has also given older generation songs another life through the show. He wants to keep the number of songs to around 5 or 6 each episode, instead of going for the 9 featured in that Madonna theme episode.
Meanwhile, the producers said that Glee will dwell on some of the supporting characters. But the plan also is to continue to mine Broadway for guest stars and guest directors. The season’s guest performers will include the previously announced Broadway vet John Stamos who “constantly sent me clips of him in Cabaret, wearing almost nothing, saying: ‘I would like to do this,’” Ryan said. There will be 2 episodes devoted to the music of a specific artist next season. One will be featuring Britney Spears songs. Additionally, the show is in negotiations with an unnamed artist to be showcased in the special post-Super Bowl episode. Adam Shankman also will make his Glee debut as a director.
The TCA critics wanted to know about the grumpy guy who always accompanies the Glee singers on the piano in the series. Ryan revealed the guy is Brad Ellis, and the only direction he has ever gotten from Ryan is: “You hate those kids”. Asked whether the baleful musician will ever speak, Ryan said: “He might say: ‘I hate those kids.’”

A mix-TAPE? Paul, we know you believe in yesterday, but this is ridiculous.
Yah, wot about us songz?
Dear Ryan,
If you’d be so kind, I’d greatly appreciate a boost for my album sales (in general). Would you mind humoring this dyed hair, aging legend with selecting some of my tunes for the upcoming season? Don’t think of this as bizarre self promotion for I actually think your show is kind of cool. Maybe I can even guest star some time?
Yours Fondly,
Paul
Yeah, how much does he spend to stay in the press. When I was growing up I thought the uk had little to offer because they kept pushing paul. I did not realize it was him until someone brought it up in defense of ringo.
But in pauls defense ryan should not have said anything until after the songs aired.
He’s a Beatle……He doesn’t have to do anything to be famous/and or be in the press….He’s a legend, and the fact that he wrote to the show and asked to be on it, is great. Frankly, I think they should honor him before some Psycho Lady Gaga, yes, her music is good, but so is McCartney’s. The Beatles will still be 100x’s more famous than Lady Gaga because they didnt have to be crazy and stupid when it came to their music/wardrobe.
What’s the point of hating on McCartney? FYI, he is a legend, but he is also still putting out vibrant, creative music. His most famous stuff, which admittedly is from the 60′s to the mid 80′s, includes iconic hits. But he has also been nominated for 8 Grammies and an Oscar since 2001, so he’s not dead yet. The Grammy noms include one for album of the year (Chaos & Creation, ’06) and for Alternative Album of the Year (!) (Liverpool Sound Collage, ’01). So Grandpa McC is still rocking rings around alot of poseurs out there, and if he wants to promote himself, more power to him.
Barnes68, That’s quite a lovely letter. Nicely done!
What a pathetic old man.
Sure, much of his post-Beatles output was shitty but it still wasn’t shitty enough to be featured on Glee.
Would be great to see ringo act in an episode of Glee, maybe play a British substitute teacher.
Is Paul pushing GLEE to use his Beatles songs or his solo/Wings catalog? If it’s Wings/solo, then I suggest: Hi Hi Hi, Let ‘Em In, Listen to What The Man Says, Silly Love Songs and Maybe I’m Amazed.
But to be fair, GLEE should do a different episode of just George Harrison songs and another episode of John & Yoko songs.
That’d be AWESOME. What’s with everyone hating on Paul McCartney? I love his solo stuff, and The Beatles are still as great as ever, whether or not they broke up forty years ago.
This is great…Pual has always been a supporter of arts education, and this just adds to it…let’s face it, it’s not like he needs the publicity…Let’s see…McCartney music or Britney Spears…no contest…honestly….
Honestly, to call Paul McCartney a pathetic old man, is pathetic in itself! Paul McCartney is a musical icon! He has written some of the most influential music in the last 50 years! It’s great that he is willing to share it with Glee. And it’s wonderful that he is such an advocate for music education! I really doubt that he needs to do this to promote himself! He is Paul McCartney for Gods sake! That name promotes itself!
Paul is awesome! I saw him in concert in 2009 and 2010 in GA and NC. I hope “Glee” plays some songs that he didn’t sing at these concerts like Helens Wheels, Daytime Nighttime Suffering,Pipes of Peace, The Back Seat of My Car, and Venus and Mars/Rockshow.
