Ray Richmond is contributing to Deadline’s TCA and Emmy coverage.
Charlie Hunnam, the star of the FX biker drama Sons of Anarchy, made like his character and didn’t mince too many words while describing the Sons’ Emmy snub on Tuesday during an FX session on the show. “I personally don’t subscribe to Emmys or awards or any of that shit. I think it’s all a crock of shit,” he said. “It’s all just so corrupting. We weren’t on he receiving end of a force that can change the dynamic of what we’re doing. All of that crap is just secondary and completely unimportant but does have the potential to ruin a good thing. So let me just say fuck ‘em.”
Sons creator/exec producer Kurt Sitter sounded a somewhat more circumspect tone on the issue, deciding not to use any profanity but also equally un-thrilled. “Here’s what I’ll say about it: Half the stories you see the day of the nominations are about the nominations, and the other half are about the absurdity of the nominations and the snubs,” he maintained. “To me, this says the system is somewhat flawed.”

Wouldn’t it be funny if the folks at the Emmys went to Hunnam and said “Sorry Charlie, there was a mix-up. You’re getting an Emmy after all.” I would love to see the look on his face if that happened.
Trust me, this dude will be accepting one if it is ever offered. Show blows.
Nope, you blow. I think the show rocks!
This show is just a bad version of The Sopranos on wheels. I caught the first couple of episodes and all the characters were total douche bags. Pass.
Maybe Charlie would accept an award if he was offered. But to say the show blows; disregards the writing, the acting and the casting which is all top notch. You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about or probably are bitter about not being part of it. Get a life dude.
Highly doubt it. I liken winning an Emmy to Homer Simpson winning his barber-shop quartet Grammy:
He tips the bell-hop with it…
…and the bell-hop throws it off the balcony…
…and the bum on the street throws it back at Homer.
I’m a fan of the show and a few of it’s actors. I also think Kurt Sutter has balls. But, I think the show could be A LOT better. Outlaw bikers (1%ers) are far more racist, misogynistic, and drug addicted than the show depicts. Love what they’re trying to do and maybe the show will get better with time. “Family Guy” did. And as far as the Emmy goes, there’s always next year.
True Blood was nominated for best drama at the Emmys over Sons of Anarchy.
I don’t think he was responding on his own behalf, but on behalf of Katey Sagal, who was amazing and deserved an Emmy for her performance last season.
Please he’d trip over himself to get to the podium to accept the Emmy.
Well, I completely agree with the guy, he’s pretty dead-on in describing any and all award shows. It’s all just a bunch of self-congratulatory, overhyped wankery meant to promote films and television shows. Not to mention the Hollywood “mine is bigger than yours” mentality of “I have 3 more Emmy’s and Oscars than you do, so I must be better than you” crap. If you give a good performance or make a good show, then you gave a good performance or made a good show…good for you, we don’t need to see you get a statue for all us “laymen” to understand you’re talented.
“Its all just so corrupting” he said, while cashing a paycheck for one episode probably the equivalent of what an average person makes in 6 months. It’s all about the art, eh Chuck?
I know what he means but that can be applied to so many things in this world. The truth should be seldom spoken and always acted upon.
“To me, this says the system is somewhat flawed.” – That’s the haps when people are raised in a society where EVERY student is the Student of the Month. In real life, there are winners and mostly losers. The Emmys were a crock long before this tiny tremor of a non-event.
I agree with BitterMuch. It can’t be considered a ‘snub’ if they show just isn’t that good. I don’t recall Charlie & Co trashing the Emmys in any of their ‘For Your Consideration’ ads.
As an actor, Charlie has absolutely nothing to do with what gets sent for Emmy consideration. That’s an entirely different part of the machine.
Yes, Kate, I realize that. But Charlie wasn’t going public with his distaste for accolades while the Fox publicity machine was cranking out the ads on behalf of the show (and Charlie.)
Um, actors do have a say in what and if they are considered. You have to submit yourself…and he and that show submitted themselves for consideration.
Smart kid.
I know members of the TV academy, they tell stories. If people knew how many people actually voted for the awards, they wouldn’t take the show seriously. Mostly it is people voting for people they know or other academy members who are friends.
It’s called SOUR GRAPES!
Sorry, but the emmys lost me when they couldn’t muster up one award for The Wire.
There’s wrong, and then there’s just pathetic.
seconded! it shows what crock these awards are. Never one single nomination for the best show ever on tv? I guess at least now they have thrown some tiny bones to Friday night Lights. Oh, but let’s slather more love on nighttime soap opera Mad Men. so overrated. seriously, noms seem to be based on how often the show is mentioned on “Entertainment Tonight”.
And while we are at it, never any love for Buffy or Angel either.
absolutely agreed. flash forward got an emmy nomination right before it got canceled. FLASH FORWARD.
think of it, the wire zero emmy nominations, flash forward got ONE. if that doesn’t tell you something, you’re hopeless.
Well said, @lolitahaze.
wouldn’t it be great if the people reporting these stories actually asked the people who talk shit about the EMMYS if they had submitted anything for the nominations process? LOL I guarantee you that EVERY single person/show who talks smack about how the process sucks, blah blah blah, has submitted themselves for EMMY consideration! you’ve NEVER heard a producer, writer, director or actor say that the EMMYS suck and so they refuse to participate in the process. To them, the EMMYS ONLY suck when it is revealed that they weren’t nominated! garbage. this isn’t news…
who the hell is Kurt Sitter? I know a Kurt Sutter who happens to be the showrunner for SOA…
I get what he’s saying about the Emmys, but there’s no need to bash MAD MEN because it does get the Emmy love. I watch that show. It’s actually quite good, not just some night-time soap. You could say that SONS OF ANARCHY is a night-time soap with guns, leather, and motorcycles, especially with that far-fetched stuff they pulled in the season 2 finale, which seems yanked out of the storylines of the most inane daytime soaps and damn near put me off the show, though I’ll be coming back for season 3. If you want to know why this show got spurned by the Emmys, try a storyline about about a mad-with-grief Irishman stealing Jax’s baby and making his getaway ON A BOAT while Jax and the gang look helplessly on from the dock, yelling, “NOOOOOOO!!!!!” Silly crap!
His publicist just shut his/her phone off
This reminds me of a recent episode of Entourage when Vince talks trash about his upcoming movie! life imitating art. As for the show, I am a fan and agree w/the poster who said Katy Sagal deserved a nomination for this season, no question.Ron Perlman is also very good. Emmys are mercurial, like everything else in this biz.
The award shows have been politicized and glamorized but the basic idea – peers recognizing the achievements of peers – remains a valid enterprise and at its basic level deserves respect.
this gets better and better, Sutter on twitter just told Forbes magazine’s TV editor to “go f**k yourself”
I wish someone had asked Mr. Hunnam, given his stance on the Emmy awards, why he even submitted himself for consideration if he’s so against the nature of the awards show.
You’re bashing Charlie but do you know if he even submitted himself for consideration? He may not have. I’m pretty certain that Charlie’s, Ron’s and Kurt Sutter’s anger at the Emmy’s stems from Katy Sagal not even getting a nomination. And she was AWESOME, not in just one episode but throughout the second season. Whatever episode they sent in to the nominating committee would have had her incredible performance in it. I can’t blame all of them for being angry at the Emmy’s when the same ol’ same ol’ get nominated for good, but run of the mill performances, not the standout kind. And unlike you complainers, I’ve seen all the episodes of SoA and the other nominees up against Katy, and the choice is ludicrous and political.
He is right to be happy for not getting nominated, cause how awkward could it be if Katey Sagal got the nominee and he, as the leading star of the show, didn’t. He needs a good manager.
SOA is the best show on TV, not just “Cable tv” but ALL of television. Katey Sagal deserved not just a nomination, but an Emmy award for her performance in season 2. Not one of the nominees in her category could hold a candle to what she was able to do with the role of Gemma. THe writing, acting and directing in this show is excellent and it has a devoted fan base who will watch no matter what the “Academy” thinks.
Well I agree with realitygurl here…SONS OF ANARCHY is the best show on TV period…cable, satellite, network….whatever…there is none better. Kurt Sutter is a genious, and writes like others wish they could. The cast is amazing, and another very impressive part of the show…it could not have been cast better.
And to all you that are bashing the show, and have watched an episode or two, let me offer a large, resounding FUCK YOU on behalf of Kurt, Charlie, and Katey, you fucking maggots.
anyone that thinks sons of anarchy is a well-written or well-acted show is an idiot or a having a preverbial “wet dream” about being a biker badass. katy sagal is the only one pulling her own weight.
