There has been a lot of speculation about the future of Law & Order: Criminal Intent on USA in the past month or so. I hear the network looked at a number of scenarios, including a full-season pickup, two-season pickup and a partial season pickup until settling on the idea for an eight-episode order for what would be the show’s 10th and final season. I hear that a final pickup decision, which largely hinges on making the economics work, will be made in the next couple of days, and the network is looking to bring some of the show’s original players, including Vincent D’Onofrio. Meanwhile, Jeff Goldblum, who starred on the show for the last 2 seasons, has decided not to return. The options on all the actors formally expired on July 31 after being extended by a month on June 30 when they were originally up. For Goldblum, the decision coincided with an agency switch. He has left Gersh and signed with CAA. Goldblum took on the role of Law & Order: CI‘s new leading man last fall when, in a major cast overhaul, original stars D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe exited, along with veteran Eric Bogosian. Goldblum now stars in Neil Simon’s The Prisoner of Second Avenue at London’s Old Vic. Law & Order: CI, which originated on NBC, was the second spinoff from the mothership Law & Order series, which was canceled by NBC in May after 20 seasons. Still going on NBC is Law & Order: SVU, joined by new addition Law & Order: Los Angeles.

sorry Jeff, we really missed Vincent D. But the show is bigger than one actor, and we’d love this show to continue for many years.
Sorry, Randy F, but I and others who have been fans since Episode One Season One, do NOT foresee the show being able to go on for many years at all. The show was created for VDO and the show WAS VDO (no offense to Katie, Eric, Jaime, Chris, et al). Jeff and MEM will land on their feet and continue to be sucessful. Unfortunately, the same may not be able to be said of the other actors and actresses, countless extras and The Big Apple, who depended on the L&O franchise for work and income. This is a sad sorry state of affairs for the Major Case Squad. Would be very nice if the former stars would come back for any or all of the *8* “final” episodes, but, alas, it cannot be.
I agree; the show is VDO. (and by that I mean period!) We should all go on twitter and demand him back. It worked for Betty White…repeatedly, I might add.
Eric Bogosian’s character was killed. L&O: Heaven?
Good one!
I like the idea of bringing back Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe for the final cycle. For me, those two actors and their characters (Alex and Bobby) are the show.
Vincent D’Onofrio’s departure was rather painful, totally miscast Jeff Goldblum’s arrival made matters worse. There was something totally creepy in the dynamic Goldblum/fabulous Saffron Burrows. If Erbe can’t come back, D’Onofrio and Burrows could be great together.
I’m still hoping that L&O CI will go on once the casting problem is resolved. Fingers crossed.
Thanks For the Return Of Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe Now I Will Watch The Show Again… I hope It Will Be On For More Than 1-8-show Season But Only If It Has Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe This Team Makes The Show
AMEN! TO THAT. VINCENT D’ONOFRIO MADE THE SHOW AS DID ERBE. I THINK THE SHOW WENT DOWN HILL AFTER GOREN AND AEMS LEFT. WORST MISTAKE EVER MADE. I STOPPED WATCHING AFTER THAT HAPPENED. I AM THRILL THEY ARE COMING BACK I AM DEFINITELY WATCHING AGAIN. I AM SORRY TO SEE IT IS ONLY ONE MORE SEASON. THEY REALLY NEED TO BRING IT BACK INDEFINITELY. THE AUDIENCE IS NOT DONE WITH THEM YET. THIS SEASON COULD VERY WELL BRING THE HIGHEST RATING SINCE ITS INCEPTION. I WANT TO ENCOURAGE ALL THE FANS TO WATCH THE PREMIERE TO GET THE HIGHEST RATING AND CONTINUE TO WATCH IT RELIGIOUSLY. LETS SHOW USA WHAT A BIG MISTAKE THE MADE AND STILL MAKING THE SAME MISTAKE FOR NOT BRINGING THEM BACK FOR MORE SEASONS.
I love Jeff Goldblum!!!!!! Been a fan for 20 years!!!
sad at this rate only the new law and order show will be the only law and order show left. for first the original gets stopped from claiming the record as longest series. now a law and order spin off days are numbered. law and order seems to be headed to be a new victim
Ver para creer… (Seeing is believing…)
This isn’t exactly a surprise. USA took a show that had its own DNA and tried to retool it with its homegrown formula a la Monk, Psych and Burn Notice. Jeff Goldblum is a decent actor but completely wrong for this show. Note to USA, you may pay the bills but you should let Dick Wolf do what he does best.
Goddammit, Jeff, what the hell. So, so disappointed he won’t be coming back. I’d rather see them get a new parter for Saffron Burrows instead of bringing Goren & Eames back, though.
NBC never has any shows in the top 25 unless they are news/reality/talent and even then it’s maybe one or two shows… the brain trust over there is dead.
Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe were the core of this show. Even Noth and his rotating partners were pretty good. Goldblum and Burrows along with Masterantonio just didn’t work and ratings suffered.
Its really too bad, the show used to be infinitely watchable and then it was ruined by morons.
I liked the newer darker CI with JG and SB and I also liked the versions with Vinnie and Kathrine and all the others. It is the story not just the cast that makes a good show. I just think USA is deciding to dump because it doesn’t fit their “Monk”, “Psych” quirky style their other shows have now.
I think CI would fit in best at TNT paired with “The Closer”.
I agree that L&O CI would work better on TNT. I happen to be a huge fan of the Closer. Putting them back to back would be awesome, but only if Goren and Eames are the core of CI again. They ARE the show.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I love Chris Noth, (and liked Jeff Goldblum before the regulars were forced out) but without VDO, there is no LOCI.
They should have ended the show when Vincent left. Trying to keep the show alive with JG totally changed the dynamic of the show. No Vincent= No show.
All due respect, Billie, the main reason for the “audience erosion”, as another article put it, is precisely *because* of the fact that Vincent and Kathryn were pushed out to make room for Goldblum and Burrows. The fan base was given the equivilent of the “finger” by those in charge and a huge number of us walked out the door with Goren and Eames. Couple that with some lackluster scripts and really contrived plots, and you get a hot mess. Goldblum’s decision does not surprise me at all.
I’d love it if they did one final set of eight episodes to wrap up Goren and Eames’ storylines. I’m not holding my breath…but it’d be nice.
Loved CI when Bobby and Alex were the lead characters. I could even watch Chris Noth and his revolving door of partners. However, once Goldblum took over, I watched 2 episodes and left. VDO and Erbe were the heart of this show and it really sank without them.
If they really are serious about bringing D’Onofrio and Erbe back then I say bring back Courtney Vance, Jamey Sheridan and most of all Rene Balcer as well! That would be worth the long wait. But Vincent and Kate would be enough to make me watch.
Vinnie was the very best. I have all the seasons 1-5 and watch them over and over. Kathrine was great as his partner too, but Cortney was really missed as well. I liked Jamie Sheridan and never cared for the Eric guy. I was very upset to hear this show was ending, but I thought I could watch Michael Cutter on the regular L & O but then they cancelled that one too. I just can’t watch SVU, one episode when an FBI agent blew her head off, was too much for me.
Vincent was L&O CI. I have no proof, but I think they cancel all the shows with intelligence that Baby Boomers watch, so they can continue to dumb down America with reality shows. The reality of reality shows is they are for morons. They cost nothing, but they are worth nothing. They want low content so these young kids can text and do the computer at the same time as watching their “show”. What a waste. CI was such a smart show because of V! At least I have him on DVD.
Hopefully they can get Vincent D’Onofrio and/or Chris Noth back…
…but if it is indeed the “final 8,” they should find any explanation possible to bring Nicole Wallace back to life and give her and Goren an epic, multi-episode showdown that’s serves as a worthwhile note to end on.
she will have to come back as a ghost! Don’t you remember her heart being removed on that awful episode. I really didn’t care for her much but the heart thing was really too sinister. I have had enough of Nicole.
This just sucks!! L & O CI was just getting their stories tight again. No offence to the last couple of seasons of CI the storylines were kind of crappy; ripped from the headlines & thrown to the wall to see what stuck for cases. Jeff was ok but I really did prefer Vince. As for the orginal L & O being cancelled that just sucks too!
The writing has suffered for the last two seasons. It lacked the “A-HA” moment that was there previously. Not sure why. Goldblum had potential, but it never got there. Perhaps a “prequel” of sorts for last 8?
The writing has suffered because the original executive producer, Rene Balcer, left the show at the end of the fifth season. Warren Leight mucked up series six, granted, but the seventh season was well-received and then he decided to bail too. The latest showrunner, Walon Green, who did some fantastic work with the mothership, has unfortunately been unable to replicate the magic of the show’s early years.
Bring back VDO, KE and Rene Balcer! Failing that… cancel the show! I can’t bear to see ‘CI’ dying a slow, painful death – euthanise it while there’s still a chance!
I have to admit, the episode when Bobby’s mother dies and he finds out who his father is, that was an amazing episode. Also the one we he went undercover and Alex almost ended up shooting him – that was intense too – the rat in the drawer – I wasn’t sure if Kate was supposed to have put that there or not – but I guess it’s what they wanted you to wonder about. You are right those episodes ripped from the headlines – like the Jon Bonet one and others were crappy. They didn’t do justice to the skills of Vincent and Kathrine.
After Chris Noth exited in 2008, I rarely watched the show unless D’Onofrio and Erbe were on. And I didn’t watch LOCI at all after they departed. Can’t stand Jeff “The Fly” Goldblum. Wish I could have been present at the meeting where casting Goldblum to replace Chris Noth was discussed. What the hell were these people thinking?
LOCI is dead and over thanks to poor casting. Way to ruin a great franchise Dick Wolf.
I liked Goldblum. This is really too bad. He should have just stayed with the show in case it does come back. Bummer. Wasn’t a big Burrows fan though, and poor MEM had a throwaway role. great actress in her heyday but they didn’t give her much to do.
They should consider transferring Jeremy Sisto and Anthony Anderson over to CI and keeping it going that way. They were pretty good together
I like that idea! Move the show back over to NBC, get some new writers, resurrect Eric Bogosian and perhaps there would be enough life-blood to start anew. I’d love to watch Sisto and Anderson for a full hour.
Get outta Dodge! It’ll never happen.
You know I actually like Sisto and Anderson together, but not on CI. Those figures on CI are a little different.
I’m still sick about the original L&O being cancelled. And I will admit that when VDO and Noth both left CI, I basically quit watching. Not because I don’t like JG because I do. I just didnt see the formula or chemistry that VDO and Noth had for the characters they played.
Since he left the show, Vincent has been asked more than once if he’d be back. The answer has ALWAYS been in the negative. USA/NBC conspired to push Vincent and Kate off the show to let GoldenBlum take the helm and it’s proved to be a ratings disaster. If he’s asked, I hope Vincent tells them where to shove it. LOCI ended April 6 2010 for most of us. Please, take the corpse out of the drawer in the morgue and lay it to rest. It’s over.
A very sad ending all around, with Vincent at the helm this show really sang, but USA had to mess with it and here is the result a lifeless imitation of the original, Goldbloom never fit on this show and this last season the ratings proved that without Goren and Eames there is no show. USA made this mistake and they should simply cut their losses and slink away. R.I.P. Criminal Intent you were a great show, you can finally be buried now.
Stop messing with L&O…dam…I like Jeff but Vincent was the best….I really wish someone would bring back L&O for it’s 21st season and give it a proper send off..
Over here (in England) the show is spread over a number of channels and seems to have random episodes with different cast members !!!!
All very confusing, but I nearly always enjoy it so sad news it is ending.
I highly recommend investing in the season dvds. Well worth the money. Especially in the later seasons when Goren & Eames’ personal lives become more prominent. It can get confusing.
