SATURDAY PM/SUNDAY AM UPDATE: It’s looking like a down box office weekend in the U.S. and Canada with total grosses of $133 million, which is -9% compared to last year’s. Here are Friday’s and Saturday’s numbers with weekend and cume grosses:
1. The Other Guys (Sony) expectedly knocked off Inception as the #1 domestic movie with a right-on-target $13.2 million Friday and $12.6 million Saturday and an estimated $9.8 million today from 3,651 theaters. That was a very big $35.6M opening weekend for the $90M budget buddy cop comedy. Sony Pictures’ summer hit streak (Karate Kid – $173M, Grown Ups – $152M, Salt - $78M) continues with what the studio believes will be another strong performer this weekend. Opening weekend exit surveys showed the gender breakdown for the film skewed male (56%) and somewhat younger with 55% under 25, including 18% under 17.
If the Adam McKay pic had tanked, then Will Ferrell’s career would have tanked with it after Land Of The Lost. But The Other Guys opened as Will’s 2nd biggest pic and 2nd highest with McKay. Together, they’re 3 for 3: Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Step Brothers. The film was helped considerably by Ferrell’s and Mark Wahlberg’s willingness to sell it anywhere and everywhere. ”Our stars did a ton for us — all of the talk shows and lots of print coverage,” a Sony exec told me. “I think the one that really stood out included Will and Mark at Comic-Con where they hosted quite possibly the funniest panel in its history.” (Comic-Con: ‘The Other Guys’ Panel) The film was even well-received by critics, with a 79% positive on Rotten Tomatoes. As for marketing tools, Sony launched a poll on Facebook with Wahlberg/Ferrell urging users to vote for their city to host “The Other Premiere.” Radio stations got behind the promotion, and even the mayor of Cleveland posted a youtube video lobbying citizens to vote. (St. Louis won.)
2. Inception (Warner Bros/Legendary Pictures) dropped only 34% — again, an excellent hold at the start of its 4th week in release — for $5.5 million Friday and $7.4M Saturday from 3,418 theaters and an $18.6 weekend (-32%). Chris Nolan’s expanding cume is $227.7M.
3. Step Up 3D (Disney/Summit) debuted Friday with only $6.6 million and Saturday even less $5.1 million from 2,435 venues for just a $15.5M weekend with Sunday’s estimated $3.8M and #3 behind Inception. It skewed predominantly female, almost 60%/40%. Even with an “A-” CinemaScore, the pic’s 3D wasn’t enough of a draw since that’s the worst opening of the franchise even with higher ticket prices in 1,826 locations. But it’s also a crowded 3D market this late in the summer. The first Step Up opened to $20.7M and the sequel to $18.9M. All three had Jamal Sims as their supervising choreographer, the same guy doing Footloose. (He also choreographed Madonna’s Sticky and Sweet Tour and Miley Cyrus’ recent World Tour.) The franchise started at the old Summit, and Disney came in as a partner handling domestic, with Summit overseeing the foreign release and licensing the film to Universal International in some territories. This weekend, the pic rolls out in Belgium, Netherlands, Israel, Denmark, Finland, Australia (via Universal), New Zealand (via Universal), UK (via Universal), South Korea, and Thailand.
4. Salt (Sony) Week 3 [3,317 Runs)
Friday $3.2M, Saturday $4.4M, Weekend $11.1M (-43%), Cume $91.9M
5. Dinner for Schmucks (DW/Spyglass/Paramount) Week 2 [3,004 Runs]
Friday $3.3M (-60%), Saturday $3.9M, Weekend $10.5M (-55%), Cume $46.7M
That’s a large -60% drop from last Friday’s only so-so opening. And now there’s a rival new comedy in the marketplace.
6. Despicable Me 3D (Illumination/Universal) Week 4 [3,413 Runs]
Friday $2.9M (-38%), Saturday $3.7M, Weekend $9.4M (-39%), Cume $209.4M
7. Cats & Dogs: Kitty Galore 3D (Warner Bros) Week 3 [3,705 Runs]
Friday $2.1M, Saturday $2.7M, Weekend $6.9M, Cume $26.4M
8. Charlie St Cloud (Relativity/Universal) Week 2 [2,725 Runs]
Friday $1.7M, Saturday $1.7M, Weekend $4.7M (-62%), Cume $23.4M
Ouch, a -69% Friday-to-Friday drop! Universal tried to spin last weekend’s mediocre opening last weekend, but the studio can’t deny now that Zac Efron’s High School Musical fanbase faded away. Pick better material, kiddo.
9. Toy Story 3-3D (Disney) Week 8 [1,714 Runs]
Friday $855K, Saturday $1.2M, Weekend $3M, Cume $396.3M, Global Cume $895M
10. The Kids Are Alright (Focus Features) Week 5 [994 Runs]
Friday $716K, Saturday $1.1M, Weekend $2.6M, Cume $14M

Amazing hold for Inception – it could make £300m domestic if those hold.
Zac Efron and Robbert Pattinson… There are like twins. Sometimes there are teen boys like DiCaprio and Justin Timberlake who have the talent to break out of teen fame. I’m talking about Timberlake singing career. And then there are the ones like (for example)Nick Carter of Backstreet Boys. Those two at the same time were breaking from their boy band status and releasing their solo albums. One become super respected artist and the other returned to his boyband.
Zac and Robert want to be like Timberlake and DiCaprio but their poor movie choices will left them with Nick Carter. The first thing DiCaprio did after Titanic was to cut his hair. Efron cut too but that was his only sacrifice. And how he want’s to be New DiCaprio i don’t know. No wonder no one came to see his movie. All he is doing – is looking pretty and sad. And that is not acting. He should take off all his make up and chose some role where he will be angry.
And Robbert Pattinson… Well, fiasco of Remember me did not teach him. What did he choose? The movie with Uma Thurman and Christina Ricci and the other about some circus. I read the synopsis of both and i have zero desire to watch it. Those two will be another box-office bombs. And if he will not start to choose the interesting scripts then he will vanish after the last Twilight movie will come out.
Remember Me is a great film and a superb performance by Pattinson, i had to make a deal with my cousin to watch it because he hated him in twilight and he was suprised at how good he is. I watched remember me and then i saw new moon and you can’t believe that this is the same actor.
Pattinson is making very interesting choices, not ncessarily franchise driven or boffo blockbuster choices, but things that HE finds interesting as an actor. He’s acting with Oscar nominees and winners and lauded directors in his hiatus from the Twi-franchise. Also, Remember Me grossed 9 million, not too impressive – but when you take a guy that was an unknown not even 8 mos. before that movie released — in a romantic drama, where he is teh sole lead, that means people turned out to see JUST him…sure everyone thought that Edward the vampire would pull in more from the Twi loving teen fanbase, but the reality is, 1) Twilight IS a romance (seeing the guy they love with someone that isn’t Bella, is not gonna make Twihards rush the theater, it has to come from somewhere else) 2) No one even KNEW Robert Pattinson when a year and a half ago – you can’t really compare Pattinson to a Zac Efron level of Disney long-time fame and merchandising which had spread over 3-4 Highschool Musicals.
That said, I think they’ll both be fine. They’ll either make sh*t or they won’t. Pattinson is a pretty witty, cerebral guy (in the interviews I’ve seen he’s engaging, funny and appealing), he’s also a very good musician – he’s an artist…I’m not worried he won’t make interesting choices.
Oh sweetie, how old are you? Maybe this site is not for you.
Oh sweetie, get back into ur wheelchair. It’s almost 4pm and time for dinner.
Comparing Efron to Pattinson is fitting. Both are poor actors known mainly for starring in bad teen films. I can forgive them that High School Musical and Twilight are badly written, but when they don’t make an effort to get help to improve their acting skills before taking on dramas, they do a disservice to themselves. They should know that no one outside the teen world wants to give them a chance and that should make them fight harder. Leonardo Dicaprio had an Oscar nomination and critical acclaim before he did Titanic. He continued to improve over the years. Remember Me was not a good film in any sense of the word. Charlie St. Cloud has already more money in the U.S. and it also a poor film. Pattinson’s next film Bel Ami is being released by Protagonist Pictures and has no U.S. distributor. Bel Ami is a well known classic. I think the fact that Hollywood is skeptical about Robert Pattinson’s acting is the reason the movie isn’t selling. Also, I find it strange that they haven’t shown it at any movie festivals. Kristen Scott Thomas was at Cannes, yet the movie wasn’t shown. It seems like that would have been great press. Neither Uma or Christina are at great times in their career either, so Pattinson may not be the only problem. I agree that Water for Elephants will have a hard time finding an audience. The main draw for it will be people who want to see Waltz’s post Oscar performance and Reese Witherspoon. I expect the audience to be older than the Twilight film audience, who will probably skip it. Zac Efron’s next project is a Nicholas Sparks book come to life. Maybe he is done challenging himself and will take the easy way out until he fades in obscurity. Maybe Pattinson will do the same. Neither of them have shown that they have what it takes to get new roles and keep working. Although, they could still surprise me. Inception is holding well despite the crowded movie season. Next week we will see if Scott Pilgrim is a dud or a stud at the box office.
I’m glad Will’s got it back. He’s hilarious. I can’t wait for Zoolander 2.
Robert Pattinson and Zac Efron will do just fine. You’re just jealous because you don’t haver their genes. I’m actually watching Remember Me right now. It’s good and was a solid script. Nothing is a sure thing and people can’t control what movie goers are gonna go for on any given weekend with smaller films like this. Meryl Streep and Robert DeNiro did just find after “Falling In Love”. Actors are entitled to make a few films that don’t do huge business every now and then.
Saw TWELVE yesterday, a complete mess at first but then its like the mess is purposeful and it turns into a guilty pleasure. Go see it for the talking teddy bears alone. Zoe Kravitz is like the hottest thing to look at. Chace Crawford wasn’t bad. Wasn’t blown away but it wasn’t like this kid is a bad actor. He could bring it one of these days.
The TOWN looks amazing.
Water For Elephants (the circus movie as you refer it to) is a beautiful novel. I’m not convinced by Reese in the lead female role or Francis Lawrence as director, but it was a good choice for Robert Pattison.
MiddleMen opens in 200 screens. Is this disaster for the film?
Depends on how well it does per theater. Some films do better starting small and then going wide.
This one is so placid at the box office it’s going to need a fluffer.
Boogie Not…Friday night’s per screen was $401, sez Box Office Mojo.
Great, the bat signal has been sent. Que the Robert Pattinson fangirls defending Remember Me as a success and Pattinson getting an Oscar for his circus movie in 5..4..3..2..1.
I read a lot of uniformed b.s. on the internet, but dismissing Water For Elephants as “a circus movie” is high on the list. Do your research, honey. Water For Elephants is based on a best-selling, critically acclaimed, award-winning novel. It is a very interesting choice for Pattinson, not just some attempt to appeal to Twi-hards. And by the way, I am not a fan.
You can’t be serious. You know there are lot of critically acclaimed books that turns out into bad movie. The Road was the most resent. It get positive reviews but the book was so “critically acclaimed, award-winning novel” that everyone were disappointed with the movie. It was invisible in box-office and all the critics and awards ignored the movie. And we were actually talking about box-office fate of that Circus movie. Which will be bad because of boring premise.
And also Reese has won an Oscar but it was only downfall from that. When was the last time when she had good movie? Her Rendition flop? Four Christmases where she played Jennifer Aniston role (furniture alongside famous comic).
Also people… Speaking of the critical acclaimed novels… What’s up with Eat, Pray, Love? Still no review. Even one. All the movies that open the same day are already reviewed. Is it that bad?
Zac was following Leo, that’s why he chose to do Charlie St. Cloud over Footloose. I just don’t get why this is somehow the end of his career????!!! He opened 17 again to over 20 million. In this same article, you say that will ferrell has made a comeback after land of the lost. I know that Zac’s next film will do great because it’s a nicolas sparks movie.
Zac does pull in a great performance in charlie, it’s just the director didn’t make it a true tearjearker by not allowing Zac’s character to grieve more. He’s a great actor with great things to come.
Not everyone was showing step up in 3D and I only saw it because of the 3D — which it is completely unnecessary — I hated the 2nd one so much but decided to give this one a chance — it was slightly better, but not as great as the first — i mean how many franchises open with 15 million where the original stars are not in the film — usually these go straight to dvd.
Zac’s prod company name is NINJAS RUNNING WILD
hmmmmmmm I wonder if that suggests their approach to material??
“Zac was following Leo, that’s why he chose to do Charlie St.”
Why do people keep saying Zac is taking a page from DiCaprio’s book? When did DiCaprio ever do a film like Charlie St. Cloud? When did DiCaprio ever choose to star in a tear-jerking melodrama with a no-name director and no-name costars? Never.
Before Titanic he took meaty supporting roles with Academy Award winning/nominated actors and directors.
And after Titanic Leo spent five years trying to figure out what to do and made some not-so-great movies before finally finding his footing again post-heartthrob explosion.
Give Zac time; he has to overcome the heartthrob thing like Leo did, but he doesn’t even have the benefit of Leo’s pre-heartthrob pedigree. But he’s good and getting better.
Agreed. DiCaprio did What’s Eating Gilbert Grape when he was 19, and anyone who’s seen that can’t deny Leo acted the $hit out of that part. Real acting. If you saw that movie, you knew he had MASSIVE talent.
Got the Oscar nod for it too. At 19.
Zac’s got a way to go. Sorry.
And after Titanic he did the Beach…
He’s still exactly not “box office gold”. I think Zac Efron is better off imitating Tom Cruise’s success.
Because Zac “consulted” Leo and are friends. Certainly Charlie is more of a stretch for him than doing another musical — Leo has done small movies — total eclipse, basketball diaries… zac actually does a pretty good job just the script is kinda twisty and the director didn’t allow him to show more. For Zac to show he can do those meaty roles, he needs to do movies like charlie to get the better directors and I think that people who do see it can see that he has the acting chops.
Zac would be better off starring in the inevitable reboot of SPEED. He doesn’t have the acting chops to take on DiCaprio. Pattinson seems to be headed for a career on the indie circuit.
Or… in five years, we’ll be seeing them both going head to head on the Syfy Channel in “SHARKTOPUS 2″.
Caught “The Other Guys” earlier this week and it’s just a lot of fun. Sure it’s silly and over the top, but I was laughing out loud. By far, Wahlberg was the funniest thing in the movie. Mark, do more comedy!
Zac Efron would do well to consider two lessons apparent in Will Farrell’s success in “The Other Guys”.
First, look what happened when Ferrrell picked well-written, tightly-focused material that is targeted to a diverse potential audience, as opposed to what happened with ‘Land of the Lost’.
Second and more important, as Farrell seemed to learn, stay within your “fach”. Yes, it’s understandable that you want to avoid being typecast in a narrow manner, but don’t overstep into areas that are currently beyond your temperment and capabilities. If you are truly in this for the long-haul, don’t make short-sighted, expedient choices. Very few people are born with the gravitas that is needed for more complex roles – be willing to work to achieve it.
And also: Your looks are what they are. Consider a role that would play off of those looks, but in a non-hackneyed way. Allowing yourself to be presented in a manner that resembles one of Bruce Weber’s softcore paeans to male beauty may please your ego and assorted teen girls and middle-aged pervs, but it is not likely to enhance your appeal to broader ticket-buying audiences.
Am confident that you don’t know what you are talking about with regards to pattinson. I too have read the bel ami script and it is wonderful and will have a mature audience. The circus
Movie is a beloved book that will appeal to the general audience
Get your facts straight
Oh please, a film with Uma Thurman and Christina Ricci isn’t going to pull any kind of audience and Robert Pattinson won’t open a film with anyone over the age of 18.
Water for Elephants is a different story – with Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz in it, it’ll probably do well and could be critically acclaimed, if the director doesn’t mess too much with the script.
However, the simple fact is Robert Pattinson is a mediocre actor and we shouldn’t really be expecting anything groundbreaking from him.
Also, Charlie St. Cloud has done poorly, but I expect it to break $50 million when it enters international markets, so it won’t be a total flop. I’m unsure as to why it was even released during the summer-time. Had this film been released in October, it could have done a lot better.
I saw The other guys it was fun.
Salt probs reach 120M.
Zac has time but if he is not staring to smart up now, he may never able to break in.
Zac Efron is desperate for a hit now? huh? You loons. Hairspray 200 million in 2007. HSM3 250 million in 2008. 17 Again 140 million in 2009. All hits. All pleased their studio and target audience. CSC is a sappy little drama late in the summer. He’s young and gorgeous with something like ten projects lined up. Can we stop with the desperation talk till he gets to at least 2 movies that don’t do well, because at my count we are at only 1.
It’s odd to question Zac Efron’s HSM fanbase because in comparative terms it seems ok. Consider Rob Pattinson’s fanbase for Twilight which is extremely active at the moment and even they didn’t show up for Remember Me in these numbers. You could argue the conclusion is most of them only care about Rob’s Twilight charater but still Zac has a fanbase enough (almost two years since the last HSM hit theaters) to outperform that tepid response in just 8 days. Remember Me will end up a better investment but that’s more Universal’s problem than Zac’s. Through 17 Again Zac got more fans but most guys who liked him there would rather be caught dead than show up to this (especially when it looks so depressing they won’t get laid) and even girls who love him aren’t pressed to see something that looks bad. No matter how good the acting is, it is buried in a ridiculous story (that’s true for both Rob and Zac).
Which means I agree with your second comment, Zac needs better material. And he needs to move on and actually transition now. He is backtracking with projects like this and The Lucky One into female only interest and more importantly, deteriorating in terms of quality. That is the opposite of what he needs to do if he actually wants to ever make any action films or even any interesting films at all.
Zach is winning against Pattinson in the U.S. movie star sweepstakes, but Pattinson is probably winning worldwide, as I don’t see Charlie St. Cloud doing twice it’s U.S. business internationally. But we’ll see.
Umm…so “looking pretty and sad” isn’t acting but choosing a role in which he will “be angry” is acting? Anybody know why he pulled out of Footloose?
Word of mouth killed DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS. They’re lucky they had their opening weekend, that movie was painful.
Schmucks was a blast. The people I watched it with loved it. Unusual, but hilarious. A joy watching Carell do something that stretched his abilities and nailed a committed character. Rudd’s a likable funny jerk. Zach G. was his usual weird amazing self. Jemaine Clement is an explosive star.
What’s interesting is that, as Nikki reported, this film in the end previewed as well as a comedy can preview. Which proves that either previews are worthless, or that a few internet haters can kill an audience’s enjoyment of a movie. Toxic buzz, whether unfounded or not, is contagious. Negative travels better than positive. Suspension of disbelief, gets replaced by jaded skepticism. Tough room!
Schmucks will keep going. Those who love it, LOVE it. Plus, Carell has a loyal following. So does Zach G. They are both excellent and hilarious in the movie. And the guy who plays the artist is spectacular.
I love both Zach and Steve C., but if you thought this movie was anything but pure garbage, perhaps you just enjoy looking at goofy faces a bit too much.
Painful if it hurts when you laugh. Hilarious movie. Seen it twice now. Highly recommend it.
That’s 0 for 2 for Empty Carny — er, MT Carney — over at Disney. Guess it WASN’T the hottest 3-D movie of the summer, there IS such thing as no such thing and — the toughest lesson of all for her, it’s NOT the coolest job ever.
Why would Disney put a lot of advertising money into this movie? I cost what, 20 – 30 million to make. Just the movie opening will alone bring in 2X that. So again, why would Disney put a lot of money into advertising? Disney will make plenty of money off this.
Robert Pattinson and Zac Efron have all the range of white bread. At least white bread has the decency to go stale after a proper time.
Zac & Rob are both talented. I was surpised to see how good Zac’s acting was in the Charlie St Cloud trailer. He has a presence on film. The movie itself seemed so depressing. I will pass even on the DVD release. Zac sit down with your management or move on. Rob on the other hand is picking some interesting scripts. I just hope his fans can see beyond Edward.
The Other Guys was hilarious!!! The whole cast fit perfectly. I haven’t enjoyed a Will Ferrell or Samuel Jackson film in awhile. Last night was a treat!
Umm…you are basing your opinion on Zac Efron’s performance in Charlie St. Cloud based off of the trailer?
That seems to be how most people judge him – but most of them are negative so nobody calls them on it because it’s vogue to hate someone young and popular no matter how talented they really are.
Yes! He caught my eye!. I have to admit,I haven’t watched any of his movies. I don’t like musicals. But, when I saw the Charlie St Cloud trailer in the theater he was better than I thought. Hopefully, he will get a good script and not disappoint. Thank God he was smart enough to get out of FootLoose!
Wow, I did not expect The Other Guys to open so big.
I am not a big fan of Farrel and Walberg but I did like this movie, very funny.
I agree! They are a good match.
The Step Up 3D open looks much worse if you really look at the date for the opening for SU2. Opened on a Thursday because of Valentines Day to the same 6.6m as this…without the benefit of 3d, summer play or a traditional Friday opening.
By Sunday, SU2 had reached 25.5 and by the end of Monday (Presidents Day) it was a 5 day of 28.7.
I understand that’s 5 day to 3 day, but looking at this 3 day to 3 day isn’t accurate either because the movie had already done 6.6 million on Thursday.
At the end of 5 days in the dead of summer with the 3D upcharge, SU3d won’t make 20 m vs. 2′s 28.7 m.
Ouch…Disney and Summit have to be really dissapointed. Why does everyone think? Was it the marketing?
It was a second terrible marketing campaign from the new Disney marketing team.
Not surprised that Step Up 3D has failed to perform to expectations. I think this might be the last release from this franchise in the theaters. They had to have been hoping for $25 million this weekend with the 3D surcharges but to end up possibly finishing third to Inception and The Other Guys shows that Disney and Summit have to be very disappointed in this release. I think this debacle will finish at around 30 million for domestic gross! It’s a MAJOR disappointment for this summer to say the least.
It was a sequel that no one really asked for… And they tried to use 3D to sell it.
no one asked for the second one either, but that opens 10m better than this one.
The cast from the original wasn’t in Step Up 2 and that cast isn’t in Step Up 3.
The only difference between the two is shitty marketing.
Funny… I was dragged to see this and the theater was packed and the crowd of young girls literally cheered after the final dance sequence.
I was completely surprised.
So I wouldn’t say no one asked for this sequel when obvious there are people out there who enjoyed it.
Oh yeah, and it had some of the best 3D I have seen in a while… It wasn’t post converted crap.
This movie cost peanuts to make so why put a lot of cash into P and A? When all is said and done, between worldwide take and home viewing, both Summit and Disney will make out just fine.
Of course it’s the marketing….it’s always the marketing, right? It’s never the geniuses who try to milk a “franchise” like step up. They are wise for jettisoning the original cast. I feel sorry for the poor folks who had to sell this turd.
I’m kind of shocked a movie like step up performs that well. Universal made several more Bring it Ons but they at least had the sense to make them straight to DVD once the original leads were gone.
Just saw Winter’s Bone. Sad that’s not in the top ten. It was awesome! Saw Schmucks, yesterday, due to a mix up. I was pleasantly suRprised. It was a fun time. Considering seeing Inception for the second time or trying Salt or The Other Guys. The summer season seems to be improving a bit. Almost washed the terrible taste of Iron Man 2 out of my mouth. Almost.
you must have been smart enough to miss A Team this summer– it reeked, and it made Iron Man 2 look like The Godfather.
The A-team is really fun. Truly popcorn, laughs and explosions. If you were going in looking for The Godfather, then you’re an idiot.
I’ve seen everything that is out this summer (yes, everything — I work in the industry and it’s free to see all this crap, plus I have to so my boss doesn’t have to), and The A-Team is one of the few movies I told a lot of people to see. It is exactly what it sets out to be — big, loud, senseless FUN.
Most of my family/friends can’t be dragged into what they believe will be a sad movie and advance notice that this was about the death of a child means no takers.
Give MT a break, she’s clearly been given klunkers from the previous regime that the current regime is dumping.
THE OTHER GUYS – saw it yesterday – I like Will, is his schtick getting old? Maybe. The film was “okay” I laughed out loud 4-5 times (can’t remember at what but it happened) Mark Wahlberg was weak… Not enough charisma (height?) I do enjoy him (loved him in Invincible) but here he was just angry (a lot) – He got old quick. It’s hard to believe this film is getting rave reviews. It got lost (and less amusing) as it went on. Oh well, it was nice to see Michael Keaton again.
Wait and see the final total on Monday for Step Up 3D.
However, there’s only one Channing Tatum and I would rather go to see him in 3D.
I really want Inception to still be no. 1 such a brilliant movie.
The Other Guys is a decent movie but it doesn’t deserve to beat Inception.
