SATURDAY PM/SUNDAY AM UPDATE: It’s looking like a down box office weekend in the U.S. and Canada with total grosses of $133 million, which is -9% compared to last year’s. Here are Friday’s and Saturday’s numbers with weekend and cume grosses:
1. The Other Guys (Sony) expectedly knocked off Inception as the #1 domestic movie with a right-on-target $13.2 million Friday and $12.6 million Saturday and an estimated $9.8 million today from 3,651 theaters. That was a very big $35.6M opening weekend for the $90M budget buddy cop comedy. Sony Pictures’ summer hit streak (Karate Kid – $173M, Grown Ups – $152M, Salt - $78M) continues with what the studio believes will be another strong performer this weekend. Opening weekend exit surveys showed the gender breakdown for the film skewed male (56%) and somewhat younger with 55% under 25, including 18% under 17.
If the Adam McKay pic had tanked, then Will Ferrell’s career would have tanked with it after Land Of The Lost. But The Other Guys opened as Will’s 2nd biggest pic and 2nd highest with McKay. Together, they’re 3 for 3: Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Step Brothers. The film was helped considerably by Ferrell’s and Mark Wahlberg’s willingness to sell it anywhere and everywhere. ”Our stars did a ton for us — all of the talk shows and lots of print coverage,” a Sony exec told me. “I think the one that really stood out included Will and Mark at Comic-Con where they hosted quite possibly the funniest panel in its history.” (Comic-Con: ‘The Other Guys’ Panel) The film was even well-received by critics, with a 79% positive on Rotten Tomatoes. As for marketing tools, Sony launched a poll on Facebook with Wahlberg/Ferrell urging users to vote for their city to host “The Other Premiere.” Radio stations got behind the promotion, and even the mayor of Cleveland posted a youtube video lobbying citizens to vote. (St. Louis won.)
2. Inception (Warner Bros/Legendary Pictures) dropped only 34% — again, an excellent hold at the start of its 4th week in release — for $5.5 million Friday and $7.4M Saturday from 3,418 theaters and an $18.6 weekend (-32%). Chris Nolan’s expanding cume is $227.7M.
3. Step Up 3D (Disney/Summit) debuted Friday with only $6.6 million and Saturday even less $5.1 million from 2,435 venues for just a $15.5M weekend with Sunday’s estimated $3.8M and #3 behind Inception. It skewed predominantly female, almost 60%/40%. Even with an “A-” CinemaScore, the pic’s 3D wasn’t enough of a draw since that’s the worst opening of the franchise even with higher ticket prices in 1,826 locations. But it’s also a crowded 3D market this late in the summer. The first Step Up opened to $20.7M and the sequel to $18.9M. All three had Jamal Sims as their supervising choreographer, the same guy doing Footloose. (He also choreographed Madonna’s Sticky and Sweet Tour and Miley Cyrus’ recent World Tour.) The franchise started at the old Summit, and Disney came in as a partner handling domestic, with Summit overseeing the foreign release and licensing the film to Universal International in some territories. This weekend, the pic rolls out in Belgium, Netherlands, Israel, Denmark, Finland, Australia (via Universal), New Zealand (via Universal), UK (via Universal), South Korea, and Thailand.
4. Salt (Sony) Week 3 [3,317 Runs)
Friday $3.2M, Saturday $4.4M, Weekend $11.1M (-43%), Cume $91.9M
5. Dinner for Schmucks (DW/Spyglass/Paramount) Week 2 [3,004 Runs]
Friday $3.3M (-60%), Saturday $3.9M, Weekend $10.5M (-55%), Cume $46.7M
That’s a large -60% drop from last Friday’s only so-so opening. And now there’s a rival new comedy in the marketplace.
6. Despicable Me 3D (Illumination/Universal) Week 4 [3,413 Runs]
Friday $2.9M (-38%), Saturday $3.7M, Weekend $9.4M (-39%), Cume $209.4M
7. Cats & Dogs: Kitty Galore 3D (Warner Bros) Week 3 [3,705 Runs]
Friday $2.1M, Saturday $2.7M, Weekend $6.9M, Cume $26.4M
8. Charlie St Cloud (Relativity/Universal) Week 2 [2,725 Runs]
Friday $1.7M, Saturday $1.7M, Weekend $4.7M (-62%), Cume $23.4M
Ouch, a -69% Friday-to-Friday drop! Universal tried to spin last weekend’s mediocre opening last weekend, but the studio can’t deny now that Zac Efron’s High School Musical fanbase faded away. Pick better material, kiddo.
9. Toy Story 3-3D (Disney) Week 8 [1,714 Runs]
Friday $855K, Saturday $1.2M, Weekend $3M, Cume $396.3M, Global Cume $895M
10. The Kids Are Alright (Focus Features) Week 5 [994 Runs]
Friday $716K, Saturday $1.1M, Weekend $2.6M, Cume $14M

THE OTHER GUYS cost way more than $90M – the final budget was around $130M.
Hey remember when all of you said “Inception” was a bomb and that “Step Up 3-D” was going to do great!? Remember that? Hahahahaha…! You guys have no taste and no credibility.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Justin Timberlake are both a lot more talented than Zac Effron or Robert Pattinson. Robert Pattinson is the new Luke Perry, he’ll be a nobody in five years when his fans grow up. Same with Zac Effron probably, they are both terrible.
Taylor Lautner, now that young man has talent. Probably better than Laurence Olivier or Marlon Brando. Same with Kristen Stewart, an immense once in a lifetime talent that is a privilege to watch.
I hope you’re being sarcastic about Lautner. I can’t believe he is going to try to become an action star.. the audience(mostly male) that is a fan of that genre is never going to embrace him.
Must be Team Jacob!
Just to throw my two cents in on your post…Kristen Stewart actually killed ‘Adventureland’ for me. I wanted to like it more than I did, and I did enjoy it when scenes did not involve Stewart, but she killed the movie for me. I feel like she never shows emotion in her roles and always has this “I’m going to be all mopey and down” quality to her roles. Just my two cents.
Yay, one small mention of Edward and there you go – every second comment is dedicated to “wonderful and talented Rob”
Some fans are you… He doesn’t need your defending comments. He needed your money when his Remember Me movie flopped. You go to Twilight 10 times and you couldn’t go to Remember Me at least 3 times?
And Charlie St.Cloud…. I kind of surprised that it such a flop. The trailers looked nice. He looked pretty. And unlike Pattinson, who is just painful to watch on screen, Efron is enjoyable to watch. He can sell his character. I look at him and i see the person he is playing. While when you look at Pattinson or Kristen Stewart you only see them. Just like Madonna, JLo and Timberlake (in the movies) they can’t sell their characters. And i wonder how Lautner will look in his first movie outside Twilight. Will he act or he will be Jacob. You can only imagine how Efron would sell Edward with his prettiness. He would be a much better Edward then that one… I even wonder – did he auditioned?
…But anyway. The Charlie St.Cloud story was such a cliché. They told all the movie in trailers. And it looked promising when he saw dead people, the death of brother and guilt. I felt sorry for him… But then they showed the Love Interest. And there it was. Like we never saw it in every romantic comedy. The whole script. Nothing new to watch. Why nother and go to theater. He should try to play some sidekick in blockbuster. Or in the moovie like “Me and Orson Wells”. He can’t sell the movie on his own.
“[Pattinson] doesn’t need your defending comments. He needed your money when his Remember Me movie flopped. You go to Twilight 10 times and you couldn’t go to Remember Me at least 3 times?”
Lol,considering how low Remember Me opened, 1 time was too much to ask from 95% of Twihards. But your observation is on the money. They care only for those fictional characters – Edward, Bella and Jacob – not for the actors. Tabloid fodder that is “life immitates art” publicity stunt Robsten doesn`t count. I hope Summit pays them well to a) make a baby so that the real/surreal blending can be complete, and b) don`t split before Breaking Dawn Part 2 comes out in 2012 (which requires about as big paycheck as the one Cameron earned from Avatar).
But back to your point, Pattinson and Stewart and Lautner need Twilight fandom`s monetary support of their non-Twilight movies, not endless written defence of bombs at every Internet forum that brings up the dismal boxoffice of Runaways, Remember Me, Aventureland, etc.
bingo..see this is where he has problems..he wants to be the lead, but he needs to learn how to act first. he’s best in an ensemble cast and he should allow himself to work with better directors and casts instead of trying to steal and pay for movies for himself. Boy needs to wise up, and he’s making some stupid choices too.
Prod companies will yank money soon if he doesn’t wise up
“And Charlie St.Cloud…. I kind of surprised that it such a flop.”
Because it looked unpromisingly low-wattage–and resembled either a bad Lifetime movie or 6th-rate Nicholas Sparks. Besides, if it was partly a romance, where was the romance? As another posted noted, it looked to be more about recovering from grief.
“The Other Guys” is forgetable, enjoy this weekend Ferrell, this is your 2010 summer weekend. This time this weekend, no one will care if you’re dead.
Xanax. Look into it.
Harsh!
The truth can be.
Efron made a great choice with Me and Orson Welles. Really good movie.
Remember me made 55 million worldwide. Still made Its money back and seriously if u are truly a fan of patinson u must see this
That`s not the point. The movie did well in regards to its small budget. It did terrible in regards to “OMG, new superstar! Most popular actor on the planet! Hollywood`s hottest property! Squeee!” hype that surrounded its leading man.
What cna I say, expectations are a b****. Kick Ass was profitable from cost/revenue POV, but is still deemed disappointment/flop because Internet hype raised expectations about what opening number would be deemed a success, and that wasn`t met. In that aspect, Remember Me did much worse because Pattinson was considered a major new star power, unlike Kick Ass cast, and his movie was heavily promoted to Twilight fandom which is huge. yet only few cared. So don`t put the blame on underwhelming run on people who bring it up in context of Twi actors inability to keep Twi fandom interested in their other projects. Blame indiferent Twihards.
Remember Me didn’t make it’s money back. The studio sold it overseas for $10Million and was hoping to recover their money by domestic sales. They need $40 Million to break even. It bombed in the U.S.. The studio is still in the red depending on DVD sales to get back it’s money. Reality to Pattinson fans is like mixing fire with water. They don’t mix. At least Efron is far from HSM and still has fans following him. When the Edward money goes away, Pattinson better start waiting tables.
Well… It looks like he doesn’t have true fans since none of them showed up for Remember Me in theaters
Even Zac Efron’s all true fans showed up for Cralrie St Cloud so it will have 23 millions by the end of the weekend. Remember Me had 19 millions domestic for it’s entire run. It’s funny that Efron is not mobbed in the streets or at the premiere, no one sleeps 5 days in the bags just to see him, no one is making tatoo with his face on them … And yet he has more true fans then Pattinson. The true fans that supported his movie career. By going to theater for his movie.
$55 million worldwide? OMG — that’s like a lot of money, huh?
Step up 2 sucked big time and to top it off none of the stars of either movie were part of 3.
“Moose” who was in Step Up 2: The Streets is the lead in Step Up 3D. And he is a well loved character. Google his dance battle vs Chris Brown online and you will see he has tons of fans who love his dancing.
“Camille” who was in the original Step Up was in Step Up 3D as the love interest for “Moose”.
The both of them have a very well choreographed dance homage to classic musicals that was very nice to watch.
And the selling point of Step Up 3D was the dancing, and it delivered.
I don’t like reading that the Sony exec thinks the panel at Comic-Con helped “The Other Guys.” That means we’re in for even more non-comic related promotions in San Diego come next year!
“The Other Guys” won on the strength of the funny clips in the commercials and the sense that we didn’t see the whole movie or every joke before it opened.
Also wanted to say I think next weekend will be fascinating. I saw “Scott Pilgrim” and really enjoyed it. While the commercials can’t get across the laughs and imagination in it, I think there will be great word of mouth. How that shakes out, I’m not sure…
What is with the Zac Efron and Robert Pattinson comparisons? Both are embarking on different career choices and shouldn’t be compared or bashed.
It seems that a PR machine is in motion and spinning the less stellar success of CSC (Efron’s team?) and now comparing him to Pattinson. If CSC was successful we would hear how Zac is more successful, however since that hasn’t happened, why not spin Zac with Robert? All of the press this week has compared CST with Remember Me.
Give them both a break, they are trying to do different things and shouldn’t have to be compared to Leo and anyone else. It is a different ball game with the internet, compared to when Leo came off of Titanic. Anyone remember the Beach? or the 3 musketeers movie leo did after Titanic?
The internet and this site afford the opportunitity for anon bashing which is getting really old.
Why not afford any actor/actress some positive kudos for trying to move away from their respective fandoms? I guess that this site is seeking hits based on hate, and says that this is a professional site for the entertainment industry (BLAH BLAH BLAH)
I won’t particpate in a anon site like this one that provides no positive spin, and is only looking for hits based on controversy.
I will give my hits to factual reporting instead.
As thumper (i think he was the one) said “if you don’t have anything nice to say…”
Grow up people, leave your computer screens, and go see a movie.
I saw Middle Men last night and that movie rocked. It was so f-ing good. Like if Scorcese did his take on the porn industry. I hope it’s doing well this weekend.
Remember Me sucked… In that case Pattinson surrounded himself with the wrong group of people.
I walked out of The Other Guys…It was just dreadful…a few funny moments and
the rest was just so boring…too bad..really had looked forward to seeing it…
I’ll give you two flops in a row! ‘Me and Orson Welles’ and ‘Charlie St’! MAOW didn’t expand due to the fact that nobody showed up when it was first released ‘at selected theaters’! Plus the buzz surrounding Zac Efron’s name has died years ago! Ask any teenager and they’ll tell you he’s ‘so yesterday’!
Why is everyone talking about Patterson. He didn’t have a movie out this weekend except Eclipse. I think he and Zac will both do fine if they keep picking good material and so far they’ve shown the can and will. Zac is a bit of a wild card. He seems to like his fame and want to stay famous whereas twilight guy hates his fame and would rather just act. I see him going more the Johnny Depp route whereas Efron if he sheds his boy looks could grow into a really good leading man in Romantic comedies ( yawn…but they do sell). Time will tell. I got dragged to Remember Me and surprising liked it.
I am so glad that SALT is still holding it’s own. It kills me that people are downplaying the success of this film. I think it will do great the rest of the week and I so see 100 million or over..
Good for Angie. I am a huge fan and the word of mouth is great. I have had so many people calling me asking if I have seen it. Most have seen it more then once.. Lot of fun. Not trying to be an Oscar bait film..nor is it trying to be the “smartest movie ever made” Just a lot of fun. AND for me that is my summer movie draw.
Oh please, can you say plant? Or is this Angie herself? The word of mouth on Salt at best has been mediocre.
And please, can you say “fun” one more time. Is that Sony’s target phrase for the film?
Am I a plant or Jolie too? lmao I also think the word of mouth on Salt has been great and thats why in the next few days it will get over $100 million.
Have you seen the foreign BO numbers? They are good. We need to wait for the European ones, but it looks like it’s heading for over $200 millions.
Salt is a great, FUN, FUN, FUN summer movie and Jolie is fantastic on it.
The poster clearly admit she’s a fan and Salt is indeed what it promised to be. A fun ride. And, I’ve been hearing good WOM for Salt.
douche-face, can you say “please” one more time?
Salt is holding better weekend to weekend than almost every movie in the same genre released this year, and its Mon-Thu numbers are better, too. That’s despite the fact that its opening was better than most of the competition as well. This suggests better than average word of mouth. Not comparable to what Inception is getting, but compared to every other movie released this year, I’d say better than average.
And really, no matter what you think of her, Angelina Jolie has better things to do with her time than trying to impress someone like you in the comments section of a website most people have never heard of. Get over yourself, dude.
YEAH any time someone says something positive about this film you get this kind of reaction. I don’t understand it. Everyone that I have talked to that has seen SALT love it. And will see it again. I think this is another Fanboy or girl that have been scratching their heads trying to figure out why the movie is doing great. And yeah the twitter traffic is wonderful.
I don’t get why it pisses some people off that the film is holding up so well. Maybe the “plants are trying to knock it for some reason”
I for one will so be seeing it again. OH and not because I need to understand anything. I will be seeing it again because it was FUN.
Keep trying, PR person. You guys are getting closer to the right tone … you’re almost there. But you’re still selling too hard. I have seen many movies in my life. My friends have seen many movies. My family members have seen many movies. I’m in the movie industry. No one has ever, ever called me specifically asking if I’ve seen a particular movie, especially a interchangeable action flick. It might be the 8th topic to come up in a conversation once we’ve run through, you know, the important stuff. If it’s a real phenomenon, like Avatar or The Dark Knight, it might get bumped up to 5th. Not freaking Salt.
the other tip off is the way she refers to her as “Angie”. I have never heard a regular joe refer to Angelina Jolie as such, so I concur it is someone who works for her or knows her; regardless, it’s not a typical movie goer brimming with excitement over Salt.
You think your personal experiences are exactly the same as everybody else’s personal experiences? That’s a strange assumption to make. I’ve personally had two people ask me if I’ve seen Salt, and both times it was the reason they called because they were going to the movies and wanted to know what they should see. I’m not dumb enough to assume that everybody in the world has also had people call them up to ask about Salt, just like you shouldn’t be dumb enough to assume your personal experiences represent everybody else’s either. So people don’t call you to ask if you’ve seen a movie–so freaking what? Other people do call each other to ask about movies. Sorry if that offends you, but it does happen.
Inception is still no.1 for me because of Leonardo. The movie story sucks but he still played it so well.
The “movie story” huh.
Where are all the breathless anecdotes about applause and yelling in theaters after this week’s openers? Funny how we only hear those after a movie bombs.
Efron,
Fire your manager now!
Please.
Go Kids Are All Right!! Glad to see it finally get in the top 10! Wonderfully acted film.
Go Kids Are All Right! Glad to see it finally break the top 10. Wonderfully acted film.
Jamal Simms choreographed RENT at the Hollywood Bowl. He’s so talented and really on a great streak in his career and is a great guy all around. Footloose dance auditions are well underway. Looking forward to seeing that film.
A 60/40 split most definitely is not the definition of “predominantly”.
Nice to see the 3D fad beginning to wear off. Notice how out of the top 10 movies, four were 3D: Two of them– Toy Story and Despicable Me would have been box office successes even without the additional premium on 3D tickets and two of them– Step Up and Cats and Dogs were dead even with the premium.
I find it amazing that the studios and exhibitors are scrambling to produce and show even more 3D in the years ahead. What a waste of money. Unfortunately it will be the ticket buyers who will have to ultimately finance their horrible decision. Or maybe not if we just don’t buy tickets.
“Oh please, can you say plant? Or is this Angie herself? The word of mouth on Salt at best has been mediocre.”
Comment by adam — Sunday August 8, 2010 @ 12:05pm PDT
Have you never heard of fans, Adam? That’s what it sounds like to me. Just like the poster says she is.
Movies besides Inception have fans just like actors besides Leo have fans. See how it works?
And if you really believe that Angelina Jolie is posting here then you’re daft.
I just read a couple of columns noting that Salt’s WOM is very good. Do a Twitter search and you’ll find lots of traffic loving it.
TOG seems like it is funny for a skit – just not sure if I can sit through an entire movie based on this premise. For some odd reaosn I am becoming drawn to Eat,Love, Pray – I think it’s the locations more than the story.
I have a feeling by the end of this summer the BO will measure up fine against last year.
