Let’s agree on this: Hollywood remains a haven for nepotism. It also opens its arms to anyone with money. So Oracle founder/CEO Larry Ellison’s 27-year-old son is welcomed as long as he’s coming up with $350M to co-fund movies. Funny how Hollywood didn’t much care for him when he was just an actor.
But now Paramount tells me David Ellison will be helping lessen its risk on films with budgets over $30 million. Immediately, he is funding half of Mission Impossible 4, True Grit, and the latest Jack Ryan thriller (from the Tom Clancy character). Paramount is especially susceptible to young Ellison’s charms because the studio has been self-financing its films ever since July 2008 when the worldwide financial crisis hit and the studio didn’t consummate a $450 million financing deal with Deutsche Bank to mitigate the studio’s risk.
Ellison and his movie label Skydance Productions came by the moolah – $150 million in equity and a 4-year, $200-million revolving credit facility led by JP Morgan Chase, – with the help of his dad who provided an undisclosed portion of the equity, according to today’s Los Angeles Times, which notes that Young Ellison had been trying to raise money since last fall. On the other hand, the newspaper forgot to mention that David Ellison really stepped in it when he tried paying Taylor Lautner $7.5 million to co-star in Northern Lights. But Taylor dropped out and other actors passed on the project produced by young Ellison and Skydance because David had written himself a big role as an actor and pilot in the movie about extreme flying. Ellison’s flack told me today the pic is now dead.

At least this son of a billionaire is doing his own thing instead of just having his father buy him a movie studio, like Carl Icahn’s son.
His father did buy him into the movie business with “an undisclosed portion of equity” (ie the paid for the whole damn thing). The guy couldn’t pay his dues like all the actors out there so he had Daddy buy him in.
This is just super embarassing…now what? He’s going to buy his way into acting in MI4? There’s gotta be something better for him to do….
Well, between a couch-jumper whose star is falling and big suit`s son who wants to buy himself a movie star career, MI4 is in the very tough place. Good for me that I don`t care for those movies. I love action but never got into MI series.
I don’t have a problem with what this guy is doing. If he is able to raise the funds to make movies then go for it.
But, why do it this way? Why not just buy all the equipment you need to make movies ie. Cameras, lights, filters, etc… and put together a team and make them that way? How much would all that equipment cost $1mil? Become like Roger Corman, but maybe make better quality films, (no offence to Corman).
Look at films like “District 9″ and how cheaply it was made. Why not network and find other passionate filmmakers who are the real deal and fund their projects and… yes, star in them as well or get big supporting roles in them. You are providing the money after all. If you can act then what’s the problem? You are creating new jobs, funding new films, etc… I don’t see what the problem is?
Agree!
Because what you’re talking about means Daddy’s Boy has to work and hustle (maybe even sweat, whoa!) and that clearly isn’t in his DNA. He wants to buy his way into big movies with big studios so he can be the Big Man.
The problem is that he can’t really act. Good example of this, Flyboys. However, I do agree, if he has the passion and desire to make films, which he does, then he should go for it. He’s creating new jobs and stimulating the industry. And he can obviously get the connections he needs to make it work. He already found the equity, just because it comes from his dad it doesn’t make it any less real.
A good indication of his filmmaking abilities might be that an actor walked away from over 7 million dollars to do one of his films. I agree, however, that he can do whatever he wants. If he wants to be in the big films and can pay for it, then that’s the way it’s going to be. It would be nice if he risked a portion of that money on smaller, indie films, but big money isn’t all that interested in risk.
More money flowing into Hollywood after a few tough years. Nothing wrong with that. I’m looking forward to MI4 and the next Jack Ryan pic.
HAHAHA even the marginally talented Lautner could see Ellison has even less talent and not even millions of dollars would change his mind….at least he’s smart or his reps are.
I’ll say what I’ve always said about David Ellison: he’s only five frustrated young executives away from his own big dog studio. The trick is that he’s not as good at finding the young, hungry ones, as he is the old, established, and tired ones.
Love this. Just… I love it. Plays like a real-life version of a satirical Hollywood novel.
how long until he gets cast as the young protge role in MI4?
Father and son have balls. This can only play out two ways: huge success or spectacular failure. Big gamble in the spotlight.
Welcome, Larry! This town sincerely LOVES you! You’ll get all the friends that money can buy. Just remember one thing: whenever one of your new friends (no matter how big) says the phrase, “net points”, you politely leave the room and never talk to that person again. Also, always have it in writing that you’re Guaranteed several independent audits per year AND list the exact dates you’re supposed to get them, and from whom.
In the meantime, enjoy our hospitality. And when you stop the funding, don’t let the door hit you in the ass on your way out. And don’t call us – we’ll call you.
Been in a couple meetings with David and he’s a nice enough kid. Hey, smoke’em if you got’em. Nepotism is a Hollywood constant. As far as acting in films he’s financed, who cares? Give the kid a chance, how bad could he be?
And like the quality of the “acting” of the third lead in a studio action movie makes a freaking difference to any person on this planet. Come to think of it, Ludacris performance in 2Fast 2Furious really took me out of the story…
Now Taylor Lautner is worried about someone else’s acting? Really? Really? Take your shirt off, cash the checks. Same guy who signed on to do a freakin “Stretch Armstrong” film, right? A film based on a male doll with silly putty arms. Guess it’s just an homage to Sir Lawrence Olivier’s gritty yet heart felt portrayal of “The Cabbage Patch Kids.”
Some of the commenter here seem rather sad. So the guy is rich and likes movies. Good. Maybe he’ll help get some movies made. The LA Times said he won’t be acting in the films. Also good.
Can’t wait for MI4
I love the smell of nepotism in the morning.
That being said, if you have a competitive advantage use it. Hopefully, like many of the people said above, he uses it for solid projects and just doesn’t throw money at the high profile projects the studios are even too scared to fully finance. There’s a reason for that.
I wish him the best of luck. If he’s successful, only more billionaire’s son will come into the game and that can only be a good thing right?
We don’t want a young Jack Ryan. Bring back a real Jack Ryan.
Love that he wrote himself a big part in a pic he’s financing, nice throwback to the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Good on him, if he can why not!!!
Better hope he doesn’t act in these films. Saw his other self-financed starring film FLYBOYS which he paid $$$Ms to produce and star in. Begged everyone to release it. Think finally paid for MGM to take it out. Unwatchable. Cute kid but no acting talent. Can’t pick material either. What is it with young kids today and their sense of entitlement? Really delusional.
Doesn’t Ovitz have the op on the Jack Ryan flick? Good luck kid! Welcome to Hollywood Hell! Ha-Ha-Ha!
did you ever notice that all articles about sons of celebrities always have the headline “The Son Also Rises” or “Here Comes The Son”.
If this film investment does not succeed, will it be “Sunburnt”?
As everyone’s said here – you are encouraged to get yourself into the game in any way you can. This is just this guy’s way – who cares where the money is coming from?
It may not matter to people who don’t work at studios, but keeping money in the pot is a GOOD thing!
Studios care A LOT about money, but they generally don’t put out absolute shit (“G.I. Joe” notwithstanding), so this will work out fine for the studio and fine for David. If Brad (Grey) feels compromised in any way, he’s not obligated to bend over backwards – it’s gotta work for both parties.
And kudos to people (slash “investors”) who pump money into the system and take some risk in Hollywood. We need more of that in times like these.
Hope this works out better for Ellison than it did for the billionaire who bankrolled that Evi Quaid film a while back. Charles Simonyi was loaded with cash from his success at Microsoft. He dropped at least $20 million on “The Debtors”, got burned, and never came back to the table.
Good for you kid. Forget what all the negative jealous people have to say. If they could do it themselves, they would. But, they can’t so they won’t. I myself have a production company with a couple of houndred million to spend, and yes some of the money came from family. Who knows, maybe we will do a project or two together. In the mean time, the best way to shut up the naysayers is to put out good films. And when you act, act well. On a side note, not sure if people know this but many actors own production companies and produce films that they star in. Many, look it up.
Best of luck
