EXCLUSIVE: A Darren Star-produced dramedy has become a hot property with three networks vying for it. I hear ABC, NBC and CBS are all after Good Christian Bitches, which will be written by Steel Magnolias and The First Wives Club scribe Robert Harling. Based on the book of the same name by Kim Gatlin, the project, referred to by some as “Desperate Housewives in Dallas,” centers on Amanda Vaughn, a recently divorced mother of two who, to get a fresh start, moves back to the affluent Dallas neighborhood where she grew where she finds herself in the whirling midst of salacious gossip, Botox, and fraud. Harling, Star and Aaron Kaplan are executive producing. Harling has been mostly focused on features, with the exception of a 1990 Steel Magnolias CBS pilot he wrote based on his play and the movie, which he also penned. On broadcast TV, Star, creator of Sex and the City, Beverly Hills, 90210 and Melrose Place, most recently executive produced the ABC dramedy Cashmere Mafia.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

we really are heading to a time when the number 1 movie in america will simply be titled “ass”
and that’s all it is for 90 minutes
See Mike Judge’s “Idiocracy”.
The movie’s called, “Ow, My Balls!”
The title alone makes me want to watch this show. It’s brilliant, Lol.
The race is on and the heat is definitely up on this story, particularly judging by the amount of comments already received on this post. I am hoping for a duel to the death here!
I can’t believe you people are going off on religion. I can sum it up: all religion is boring.
First off- the title is very offensive and most likely will be changed.
To RJ:
Said like someone who doesn’t know their Bible. The Bible and the Judeo-Christian religion is anything but boring. In fact, Hollywood has mined the Bible for story ideas for years and will continue to do so for years and years to come. If you have doubt of this fact then you have no business posting at this site.
Here’s some of what you missed by not reading the Bible (I’ve taken a little liberty and made some settings more contemporary):
Night Time Soap/Drama
Man spies his employee’s wife bathing and seduces her. She gets pregnant so he has her husband sent on assignment where he is killed before he finds out the deal. All hell breaks loose thereafter and man falls on his face before God and repents.
Man with speech impediment hears voices from God to take action. He has to fight his fear of public speaking in order to lead his wayward people to freedom and outwit a fearsome ruler.
Action Adventure:
Young inexperienced teen kills a mighty giant and becomes king.
Young dreamer survives the jealousy of his brothers and forced labor camps only to have to fight off his boss’s cougar-of-a-wife. Accuses of attempted rape, he is imprisoned then miraculously set free because of his ability to interpret the dreams of the troubled king. He rises to great prominence, reconciles with his family and saves the nation from a famine.
And there is so-o-o much more. By throwing around words like “boring”, RJ, you’re missing your chance to read entertaining life stories and to know the one true God by reading His word.
The whole, “It’s so unfair to bash Christians. What about Muslims?” argument is pretty naive. Sure, it’s frustrating and wrong that the Muslim faith has become a no-go area in entertainment, but that’s kind of missing the point.
The reason Hollywood likes to bash Christians is because they rule most of the country! You can can talk a about other faiths having a role in society but ultimately, since the first puritan stepped off the boat, America has been ruled by the Christian right. Right now, the President is a practicing Christian!
It’s important Christians are bashed. It’s important any organization with any kind of control over a large group of people are bashed. The bigger the control, the more bashing. It helps stop the country becoming brainwashed!
Christians don’t rule Hollywood apparently. I would like to see a show bashing atheistic, bi-coastal elitist snobs like Smokin Tony.
Nothing can insult Christianity more than what many alleged Christians have done themselves.
Really? That’s the title? Lets start a pool on how soon a new one is announced. I claim December 25th, 2010.
Everyone’s comments are horrifying. I moved here to participate in something great. Hollywood is supposed to be where dreams come true and people create art for others’ enjoyment. No one here even pretends to do that anymore. You’re all so busy clambering over each other to get to the top, to have the next best “crappy idea” that gets made on the cheap, and pummeling your souls down so there isn’t a shred of conscious left when your tongues spit venom at everyone humble dreamer around you. Shame on everyone of all colors, sizes, races and religions. You’re all assholes.
Betty, if your dream is so easily destroyed by contact with the real world, maybe you need to rethink your dream. The diamonds are still out there, you just need to wade through some real crap to get at them at times.
That could be good comedy if it were a Muslim-american writing it. It would be self-reflective and nuanced and personal. But since there are no Muslim showrunners it would just come off as a mockery. An especially explosive mockery if it were written by Ivy-educated jewish sitcom writers. The reason Christianity is fair game is that many Christians assume this is a Christian nation. It’s supposedly common experience, so we should all be able to comment on it. But a show about the particular dichotomy of fundamental Islam and western values would require a muslim or someone incredibly sensitive to pull it off with any intelligence and grace.
I would understand all the thin skins if the title was “All Christians are Bitches”. Or if it was called “Being Christian Makes you a Bitch”. But it’s not. It’s called “Christian Bitches”. When I read that it says “Bitches who happen to be Christian”. I have noticed a trend against Christians of late, but against a certain specific type of Christian. The kind who doesn’t practice what they preach, and doesn’t really seem to walk the walk as well as they talk the talk. It’s a response to the attack style Christianity that has become more prevalent lately. That’s what this sounds like to me. And really, when every single president has been a practicing Christian, and it’s the most practiced religion in the most powerful country in the world, is there really a culture war happening? Jesus’ birthday is a federal holiday. God’s on the money, and in our pledge of allegiance (although only for 60 years). So really, even if this is Christian-bashing, and it’s not, isn’t it like throwing pebbles at a tank?
Did I miss something? Did a Muslim write this book/tv series? Is a Muslim producing / directing it? Is a Muslim funding it?
If not, why’s this thread about Muslim bashing? How about Jews? Or any other minority while we are at it?
Not sure of the original speaker here, but as a Christian I completely agree with this quote:
“The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians, who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, and walk out the door, and deny him with their life style.
That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.”
I have just heard that you plan on airing a new dramedy Good Christian B______. I am a good, God fearing Catholic Christian who must constantly struggle for my family to make the right choices every day with shows like this coming out all the time. Not only does this wrongly portray Christian women, it is morally detrimental to women. What has happened to good clean T.V.? The sex, violence, bullying and language have gotten so out of control. Please set a new standard of T.V. shows, and you will see a new following. If this airs, I will turn off your station for good. Thank you for taking the time to listen to my voice.
