This past Saturday was the start of the new season of the British version of The X Factor,
and it was revealed over the weekend that Simon Cowell’s show has been using Auto-Tune to make the audition contestants sound better by correcting pitch and disguising off-key mistakes. Not surprisingly, fans are outraged. Many pop singers use Auto-Tune on their recordings or in live performance. But no one knew it was being used until Saturday’s season premiere, which featured a performance by 18-year-old contestant Gamu Nhengu who sang Katrina and the Waves’ 1980s hit “Walking On Sunshine”. After hearing her effort, judge Simon Cowell told her she was “really talented” before she was unanimously voted through to the next round, in part because of her compelling back story. That’s when fans crowded onto Facebook claiming they could clearly hear that vocal enhancements had been employed on Gamu’s voice and accusing the show of perpetrating a massive con. (“When she got going on the second verse, there’s a 10-second chunk where it’s really, really sharp and there’s an Auto-Tune moment.”) In response to the controversy, an X-Factor spokesman admitted that post-production work such as vocal enhancement technology was used because of all the microphones on stage to “deliver the most entertaining experience possible for viewers”. But the spokesman promised that the live shows will indeed “be live”. The use of Auto-Tune is a hot button issue in the music industry with both JayZ and Christina Aguilera protesting its prevalence. I think Fox has a duty to ensure that Cowell doesn’t bring his cheating ways to the U.S. when The X Factor launches Fall 2011.

What was most confusing about it was that it actually detracted from the performances. It actually overshadowed some of the good performances and the best ones didn’t have it. It was a real “WTF?” moment.
My guess is that it will quickly be removed. On the UK shows Cowell has a pretty good record of admitting mistakes quickly and rectifying them as poor Kelly Brook found out to her cost. Tbh, I couldn’t care less about it being “honest” but it was ineffective from a purely entertainment standpoint.
The irony of Christina Aguilera is that she has admitted to using it herself. It’s widespread in the music industry but I don’t think it works on the show.
What a joke! Simon was caught at his game of cheating. This show is done…. once everyone knows that they are faking it and enhancing the artists, then it looses all creditabilty. How do you spell Milli Vanilli – SIMON, AKA – X Factor.
Not surprised by this “revelation” at all…in today’s music business I’m more (pleasantly) surprised when an artist doesn’t use Auto-Tune. From an artistic standpoint it has contributed to the decline of good music by allowing anyone with looks and the ability to sing at least on pitch to become a “star”. Kudos to Jay-Z and Christina Aguilera for protesting it (especially the latter, who actually does have a great voice). It’s unfortunate that artists with genuine talent toil at the club level their entire careers when crap like KeSha and that Mike Posner guy get national recognition and success for being able to use Auto-Tune.
Listen to Glen Hansard if you want a fantastic, natural voice with great lyrics and melodies/musicianship.
fans are “outraged”… hilarious, don’t they realize this is “reality” television where nothing about it is very real at all?
Ten second chunk? I hear it the whole way through…
Exactly what is the difference between American Idol and the X factor? More karaoke? And yes Auto-tune sucks and you can hear it all over this clip
It was so obvious (and off-putting) I could hardly even call it cheating. However The X Factor -is- famous for having tons and tons of sob stories in the “initial” auditions (even moreso than Am Idol) and then booting them before they get to the live shows, so I imagine it won’t be an issue (especially after the controversy generated thusfar).
Why is this “cheating”? Isn’t the point of The X-Factor (as opposed to American Idol) to give contestants all the benefits that actual pop stars have, to make them the best they can be? Makeovers, PR experts, etc. Seems like AutoTune would just be another one of these benefits…
I’m more offended that she completely butchered the lyrics…”you’re my sunshine woah uh oh but you gotta go”??!!!
She started her audition by saying she was doing Walking On Sunshine, but that she had changed the lyrics to fit her better… or something like that.
That’s right. I want my marginally talented, totally manufactured pop stars to be able to sing adequately on their own!
The U.S. doesn’t have a problem with Lance Armstrong? why would we care about minor cheating like this
When auditioning for an industry that will relentlessly auto-tune you, isn’t auto-tuning natural?
I’ve known a dozen trained singers to try out for these shows over the years and they’re always told that the show is looking for natural amateurs, not people who’ve had any training… what do you expect?
Totally agree but this is nothing new. They do this on Idol, America’s Got Talent, and more (not live shows but other shows). Otherwise, these people don’t sound too good.
Much ado about nothing.
If we can’t trust what we see on television… ha
I’m not surprised. I imagine that most of these reality-competition shows are either manipulated or completely fixed.
The only entertainment value in the auditions should be the raw vocal ability of the contestants. And if it’s a lack thereof, we want to hear that, too. The auditions are supposed to show who has what it takes to compete and who doesn’t, based on natural, unenhanced talent. Even when singers get to the actual music business, if their voices have to be doctored, they should find another profession. I am totally unimpressed with so-called “vocalists” who are all production value. X Factor used to be about finding the best SINGING talent, and it’s a major deterioration of the show if real singing ability is no longer required. If Simon intends to pull this on the US version, the show may be in jeopardy out of the gate.
I’m still not convinced on all these shows (AGT, AI, BGT, etc.) that “live” is really without any enhancement or pre-recorded for lip-synch. I’ve heard “live” can mean a previous performance earlier is used in a staged production later. AI admitted such re. their group numbers. What might be cool is an unplugged night for these shows like they used to do on MTV. The tension would be palpable, but so would the actual talent.
It’s amazing how someone who claims to have no fear and big, brass balls is ultimately very insecure about being critiqued in a public format. What a joke.
Oh he won’t pull that in the States. Shows like X Factor are considered game shows and since the 1950′s there have been Federal laws against cheating. If he used Auto-Tune and it influenced the outcome, production staff could end up spending time in jail.
I believe the term “nontroversy” applies perfectly to this situation…
We live in an age that celebrates mediocrity. Who cares if that celebration involves Auto Tune?
Who cares what her “back story” is? We’re not electing her to office, we just want someone that sings well.
It was like she was improvising the lyrics. Forget the auto-tune and give her a teleprompter.
I find the X-factor talent less than Mediocre compared to the U.S. talent and that’s why he’s bringing it to America. Not only a wider audience, but we actually have “stars” making big money…whereas his only “hit” has been Leona Lewis…and maybe Susan Boyle and I say maybe because Susan is still a novelty….does she have Legs? we don’t know yet.
And the Brits talk funny, I’m sorry. Their glory days as world wide entertainers is way over.
So when Xfactor comes to America, I don’t think it’s going to get the audience Fox is expecting, because we would have been burned out watching AI. Why bring it’s “cousin” to sit next to it, and a mediocre cousin at that?
Brits ‘talk funny’? Way to live up to a xenophobic, American stereotype!
PS – for the record, AI has never produced any singer that has been particularly successful outside of the US, save for maybe the girl who won the first season…
I love how this is getting so much publicity. Its very common practice in post to auto-tune performances on reality-entertainment shows. Oh and this decision had zero to do with Cowell, this was a production decision made by others.
Bloody awful. Poor performance, not much of a range, butchers the lyrics, and all compunded by a bad use of Auto-Tune software.
Actually, I can’t wait for this to come to the US and bomb. Simon Cowell has had more than his 15 minutes and it is time for him to go away.
