EXCLUSIVE: After a bidding war, ABC has nabbed the Darren Star-produced dramedy based on Kim Gatlin’s book Good Christian Bitches. The untitled project, which will be written by Steel Magnolias and The First Wives Club scribe Robert Harling, has received a rich put pilot commitment by ABC after the network and CBS went down to the wire in their pursuit of the dramedy. I hear ABC’s new chief Paul Lee spearheaded the network’s efforts to land the project, which he considers a great fit for the ABC brand. While ABC, NBC
and CBS all went after the dramedy when it hit the market at the end of last month, ABC, home to light female-centered fare like Desperate Housewives, was the obvious destination for the project, often described as “Desperate Housewives in Dallas.” It centers on Amanda Vaughn, a recently divorced mother of two who, to get a fresh start, moves back to the affluent Dallas neighborhood where she grew to find herself in the whirling midst of salacious gossip, Botox, and fraud. Harling, Star and Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment are executive producing the project, which, with ABC on board, is being laid off at ABC Studios. The project reunites Star with ABC where he most recently executive produced the 2008 dramedy series Cashmere Mafia.
In addition to the Darren Star project, ABC recently handed out a put pilot commitment to a thriller from Paranormal Activity writer-director Oren Peli and Michael R. Perry, with DreamWorks TV and ABC Studios producing. Books, novels and comic books, are very hot this TV buying season. The deal for the Good Christian Bitches adaptation is the latest in a slew of high-profile sales. ABC just put in development a series adaptation of Pat Conroy’s novel The Prince of Tides with Sony TV and writers Bob Brush and Mel Harris. NBC is developing an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel The Dark Tower with Imagine and writer Akiva Goldsman, Fox handed a series commitment to an Alex Kurtzman/Roberto Orci/DreamWorks TV-produced adaptation of King’s son Joe Hill’s graphic novel Locke & Key, CBS picked up Treadstone, a spy drama based on Robert Ludlum’s novels from CSI creator Anthony Zuiker and feature writer John Glenn, Warner Bros. is exploring a TV series based on the DC comic The Sandman into a TV series, and Warner Bros TV-based Bruckheimer TV is looking to do a half-hour series based on the comic strip Zits.

The title will most definitely change otherwise Disney will upset a large percentage of people in Fly Over Country. Disney should get ahead of this before the thumpers make a big deal over it.
Chauncy
In the article, it says “the untitled project” indicating that they are looking for a new name for the show.
Untitled is right..
Hah, I hope not.
I’m a midwestern Christian and I love the title. This show would do well to stay brutally honest to the two-faced personalities we all know/love/hate in our “Christian” culture.
If ABC gets criticized as anti-Chritian they can just add bitches from other religions.
@B*****Fan
You need Jesus.
So will they also pitch the TV project called: Stupid Liberal Whores?
Liberals can’t be Christian? Christians can’t be bitches? Whores can’t be smart? Your title lacks something the original’s has
No, Christians are the ones that are always put down from Hollywood. “Bad Hollywood Faggots” has a ring to it…oh no, that would be mean spirited.
yes, I think the more appropriate proposition would be Smart Liberal Whores.
ABC: Always Buys Crap
Chauncy, What’s the point of changing an attention getting title? People will protest and you know what usually happens? More people tune in as a result.
Tell that to the producers of Cougar Town.
So ABC hopes to reinvent their powerhouse wheel or in the very least grease the skids of “Desperate” with this offensive dreck. Fail. Fail. Fail. Haven’t we already seen enough of this by the way — ? Anytime a southern upper class white woman is portrayed on TV she is ALWAYS a good christian bitch. Conversely, the windfall success of “The Blind Side” — even MORE SO derails any idea America wants to see upper white class southern women portrayed stereotypically or from a soap wheelhouse (nothing against Starr). Also, I can’t help mentioning the thinking that changing a title is going to make it all okay, is like thinking changing the name of Auschwitz to the Florida Keys changes history. Antisemitism is not tolerated here in Hollywood, why then is denigrating Christians? Isn’t a hostile act against one religion a crime against ALL religions? Seriously, who the hell is critically thinking for ABC? What the hell are they doing?
Oversensitive much? The title of the book isn’t exactly ALL CHRISTIANS IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA ARE BITCHES AND SHOULD BE PORTRAYED AS SUCH.
@…
“Oversensitive” — how ABC will explain middle America’s unenthusiastic response when this show tanks.
Another Liberal rant. What happened when the diredtor of 2012 was threatened with a Fatwah if he showed a Muslim icon destroyed. Oh well let’s bash the Christians, they can fight our god forsaken wars. No other group is as frequently bashed as those right wing Christians. What a bunch of yellow bellied cowards.
What about another vacation movie “Muslims on Vacation in strip bars of New York”. A gresat reality series.
Get off your high horse, honey. It sounds like these will be a soap that just so happens to feature Christians, not some social commentary/assault on the state of Christianity in America.
Also, last time I checked, the military wasn’t strictly a Christian fighting force, so whatever. Cry a little harder about how the awful big bad media is attacking your precious religion. Did you ever think that some of the negative portrayals (of which there are very very few) may be true?
I wouldn’t expect anyone to buy your spin…”just so happens to feature Christians”…really? How come it doesn’t “just so happen” to feature Muslims? or “just so happen” to feature Catholics?
Because if it did, ABC or any network wouldn’t touch it.
I have read the book – fairly good material. Unfortunately, I also saw bootleg copies of the not seen HBO series, 12 Miles of Bad Road, which is far superior to anything ever done about my hometown including the original Dallas series.
Whoever 12 miles up at HBO should be fired. Hopefully the new guy at ABC will show more sense even though his material will probably (almost impossible to top the 12 Miles stuff) not be as good.
Go ABC! Show you know there are actually stories and people between the coasts.
darren is a horrible writer.
Another show about privileged white folks… sweet!
The title is the hook. Just like Shit My Dad Says.
That these women are duplicitous is the essence of the concept – they’re pimping the Christian label to do all sorts of evil shit to each other. We get it immediately. It’s fucking brilliant. Lose the title and you lose that.
Since Gossip Girl got away with acronym-checking the word “fucking” not so long ago with their OMFG promos, here’s your alternative title if you must: Good Christian B’s.
Why are Christians the biggest whiners? Seriously.
Well Jon,
Let us look at your comment and let us assume the book was titled, “Good Jewish Bitches”… and suppose a large contingency of Jews wrote in comments opposing the title, perhaps feeling it denigrated their religion and people (rightfully so). To which YOU Jon, wrote, “Why are Jews the biggest whiners? Seriously.”
Do you see the double standard?
“Why are Christians the biggest whiner?”
How about they have to put up with everyone’s abuse and ‘turn the other cheek’. Try antagonizing other religions and see how well that goes.
I don’t get how you can prefer to be so negative in light of your ignorance of the book. Merely the name is creating a stir, which is good , but the title is not the story. Read the Damn book then (be a) bitch about it. Knowledge = power
The Crazy thing beyond all the judgment and gossip going on(which, along with Grace, IS what the book is about) is that they have Bobby Harling writing the show. would that not lead one of open mind to believe he will create…..
Yes I suppose I am getting a bit condescending. WOW I fit right in.
How about a show called “Slutty Muslim Whores”??? How edgy would that be, man! What? Oh that’s right, it’s only cool to mock those stupid Christians……
Y’all know the book is based on a true story right? How can the story be deemed so outlandish when the events actually happened. Anyone in Dallas society knows the true identities of the characters as well as all of the locations mentioned. See: Bergdorf Blondes.
I highly doubt ABC would never title a show good black bitches or good jewish bitches or good muslim bitches or good lesbian bitches or good liberal bitches. But Christians have become fair game in hollyweird and the media, always the target of outrageous stereotyping. And while were at it, how would it sound to have the White Entertainment Network or the White Image Awards? Double standards are for hypocrites.
