EXCLUSIVE: In a move that signals billionaire Steven Rales’ intent to step up his output of auteur-driven prestige films, he has hired Mark Roybal to become president of production of his Indian Paintbrush banner. Roybal spent the last 14 years working for producer Scott Rudin, the last 5 as Rudin’s president of production. During that run, Roybal was executive producer of the Oscar-winning No Country for Old Men and a producer on Doubt and brought in such projects as Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, the Rudin-produced 9/11-themed drama which will go into production early next year with Stephen Daldry directing Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks.
Rales, an industrialist who regularly makes the Forbes list of richest men in America, started the Santa Monica-based Indian Paintbrush in 2006. The company has made an overhead deal with Up in the Air director Jason Reitman’s Right of Way banner, and has produced the Wes Anderson-directed The Fantastic Mr. Fox and The Darjeeling Limited, both produced by Rudin. Indian Paintbrush just co-financed with Paramount Jeff Who Lives at Home, which is directed by Cyrus helmers Jay and Mark Duplass and stars Jason Segel and Ed Helms.
Roybal’s mandate: be aggressive in acquiring filmmaker-driven properties on the ground floor and turn them into films that Indian Paintbrush will either fully finance or co-finance with studios. The disappearance of studio specialty shingles has created a need for new players. Studios want these pictures, particularly around Oscar time, but they don’t want to finance them. Rales becomes more active at a time when the prestige scene is reestablishing itself, and coming off an encouraging market at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Mark Roybal is without a doubt one of the smartest, nicest and most decent guys in our business. Rales is lucky to have him..
Rales is stepping in after the Indie playing field has been cleared — there’s a moment of opportunity here, a vacuum to be filled.
And Mark Roybal is a great hire.
Congratulations to both of them.
BIG fan of Mark Roybal. This is a great hire.
Roybal really is a class act. He’s kept Rudin’s brand (but not personality) in LA for years. He has single-handedly made that brand less reviled and less stressful to deal with.
I’m sure Rudin will take it out on his assistants, but was happy to see him continue to advance.
He has a really refreshing way of dealing with people, pressure, and exhibits great taste consistently.
Roybal is one of the truly good guys. Smart, thoughtful, great to work with, inventive, creative… a great hire.
Roybal deserves this – always polite and smart. Let SR stew and boil and scream, blah blah; he should be happy for Mark.
Roybal is great. You are all scum.
Roybal is a great guy. Pitched him once and he asked smart questions. That’s a + in my book.
This is simply fantastic!
Roybal is a great guy. Very on the level and personable. congrats.
Mark is a true gentleman in a business full of thieves, bitches and posers. Not only does he have exquisite taste, a die-hard work ethic and great relationships, he is one of the nice guys and treats everyone from Assistants to A-listers with genuine respect, and always keeps a healthy perspective and sharp sense of humour. Great hire for Rales. Looking forward to seeing that slate.
People throwing money around and buying/making new films is def good news.
Does this mean that the industry is finally on the upswing again? Any chance late 2010-early 2011 will see the spec market opening up towards what it was like in the ‘golden days’ again?
Sidenote, what’s Roybal’s heritage? Latino? East Indian?
His father is Spanish and his mother is Filipino.
Wealthy.
I had the honor of working with Mr. Roybal at Paramount a few years back. Even though I was a lowly assistant he always treated me with complete respect, a rarity in the biz. He is a genius and so deserving of this new position.
I am so happy to hear about Roybal’s success. As an intern with SRLA five years ago, he was one of the nicest guys on the block and treated everyone equally. He has a great personable demeanor and strong work ethic. I wish him much success.
Mark is a successful humble young man.Gifted at his job, Acredit to Pilar and Rudy
