TORONTO: The Toronto deals are exploding! Anchor Bay Films has just closed all English-speaking rights to Beautiful Boy, the Shawn Ku-directed drama. I’m told the deal was 7-figures, negotiated by Paradigm Motion Picture Finance Group’s Ben Weiss with Anchor Bay Films’ Kevin Kasha. Deal includes a P&A commitment. Lightning Entertainment is selling foreign. It stars Maria Bello and Michael Sheen as disengaged parents of a college student who discover not only that he has been killed in a campus shooting, but that he was the triggerman who massacred other students. The picture premiered Sunday and has been a topic of buzz, particularly for those strong lead performances and Ku’s and Michael Armbruster’s script. Anchor Bay continues to raise its profile after acquiring and releasing Solitary Man and City Island. First Point Entertainment’s Lee Clay and Gold Rush Entertainment’s Eric Gozlan produced the pic.

2011 release date?
Looking forward to a screening of this film on Friday in Toronto. Great performances.
Toldja. Negotiations just taking a little longer. The pendulum is swinging back and content is becoming king again. There are now plenty of pipes to consumers to monetize good content.
need to thank my trusty sidekick at STARZ Business Affairs, Richard Turner who helped me land this gem of a movie for Anchor Bay Films!
Richard Turner is a secret weapon! I worked with him at Sony and he is not only the sweetest guy in the world (and funny!) but he is excellent at his job. Say hey to him for me and to find me on Facebook!
A movie about a dead teen, who’s also a mass murderer, yippee!! Just writing the words “dead teen mass murderer” gives me that pep rally giggly glee feeling. Are we so cynical that a film called Beautiful Boy must be about a killer to find an audience?
LOL no kidding.
Good luck finding an audience for that premise…
It’s comments and narrow minded views like your that keep hollywood from making new and engaging films.
Yay Iron Man 34….Go take a walk in traffic “Doc”…Doctor Dueche bag maybe…..OHD in Deuchology.
Is your definition of an interesting movie that it gives you a giggly feeling?
Congratulations to Lee Clay and the whole team on this movie. A triumph for quality content!
So does this mean it will be in theaters?
I hope disaffected violent teens do not see a movie as a reward for dying in a really F’d up way. Another way of saying, hopefully no copycat effect.
Having seen the film, it’s not about the shooting — it’s about how the parents work through the aftermath and how ironically, it brings them back together. Emotionally wrenching film that ends on a hopeful note, but in no way glorifies or even really discusses the shooting. Highly recommend.
You Toldja wrong you stupid dishonorable little midget. Still doing your “genius” brother’s bidding? Mistake after mistake as far as I’m concerned. Yet another.
Having seen this movie, the son’s actual rampage is never shown and it’s, basically, the parents story. It’s an incredibly smart film and trust me, I went in with very low expectations after hearing what it was about! The performances, script and direction are brilliant. Very smart buy.
Great work Kevin. Another loser purchase for a loser. Can anyone tell me a single movie he has purchased that made money at the box office. This one sounds like a complete buzz kill. Literally and figuratively. Congrats on getting this dead weight no one wanted. Great job filmmakers on getting your movie sold. Cash those checks soon Kasha and Starz will be out of business by Monday.
Pretty sure SOLITARY MAN and CITY ISLAND have both been solid hits… $4M+ on SM and $6M+ on ISLAND. Those were pretty solid returns on small movies in an otherwise dead indy market.
steve c.– whatever your issues are with me… please dont take it out on BEAUTIFUL BOY. Maria Bello and Michael Sheen are wonderful in the movie…. the director is outstanding!
thanks.
It’s a wonderful film. It will find an audience through buzz and great work the way In The Bedroom did. No, it won’t be the next Iron Man, and probably not the next Little Miss Sunshine, but nevertheless it may well make the purchase price back and bring award benefits too.
