As part of Warner Bros. Entertainment’s efforts to better integrate the DC Comics business, DC Entertainment will relocate its multi-media and digital content production operations to Warner Bros.’ lot in Burbank, California. That includes all businesses related to the development and production of feature films, television, digital media, video games and consumer products as well as the company’s administrative offices. Only DCE’s publishing operations will remain in New York. The move is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2011 and will involve layoffs as well as personnel relocations. “This strategic business realignment allows us to fully integrate and expand the DC brand in feature films as well as across multiple distribution platforms of Warner Bros. and Time Warner,” said Jeff Robinov, President, Warner Bros. Pictures Group, “We are creating a seamless, cohesive unit.”
Speaking at an investor relations conference last week, Warner Bros. chairman and CEO Barry Meyer touted maximizing DC’s potential as a priority for Warner Bros. and said that a DC slate of new projects will be announced by the end of the year.

And so begins the destruction of DC Comics…

Wow — the end of an era. But it makes total sense given how closely they want DC to be working with WB. Next…Marvel Comics will relocate to Los Angeles in the next five years.
Er, what?
Marvel’s been here for a few years. Unless you mean the publishing arm will ditch NY?
Heard that there is no one left in the on-the-lot DC office. Do they ACTUALLY think that they can empower the Warners execs and have them cover DC, Wildstorm AND Vertigo without having any additional development bodies committed soley to the development of comic properties? Talking about spreading themselves thin and not realizing that these properties need people who actually know them.
It was my understanding that WB wasn’t looking for laisons to bridge the gap but to empower the DC execs (e.g. head of creative Geoff Johns and his presumptive staff) to make those decisions about developing the comics into films. That makes sense — basically, reject the “comic book” exec idea and reframe the job as comic property producers.
Who are the DC execs? There are none now. Right now the only people that exist are the DC Publishing execs who know nothing of the film world and you have the Warners execs who mostly know nothing of the comic book world. You still need, as Marvel has, executives who know how to navigate both. I know I sound like the liberal that I am calling for more oversight and “bigger government” but because of this “streamlining” people just lost jobs, plain and simple. How many jobs, if any, will come to Burbank? I don’t know. What I do know is that Geoff Johns as talented as he is writes as many as four to five comic books a month, has multiple mythologies to maintain and juggle and you’re telling me that he’s going to steer the ship without some really talented people by his side? It all seems shortsighted on Robinov and Nelson’s behalf.
While this is certainly significant, it’s not really that big of a deal. The “feature films, television, digital media, video games and consumer products” departments are all relatively new or have only become significant in the past deacade.
It’s nice to hear about jobs coming to the neighborhood rather than leaving it. Yay!
Yeah, this should really off set all those outsourced Exec jobs in India…

Unless your neighborhood is the ever shrinking New York entertainment community. Another one bites the dust.
Agree Patrick. For once jobs are being saved in Hollywood.

I don’t know if you realize this, but the era has not ended because the article points out that DC Comics is staying In NYC, while it’s newer mulitmedia/film dept is moving to LA.
If you think about it, it’s not that big of a move, nor a big change to the company.
can see the move mostly because warners front office is in cal plus this way execs for dc entertainment will not have far to go to pitch characters for tv shows and getting movies going. though wonder if this means dc direct goes to cal also as for wild storm. they are now dead because of the move. and vertigo may no doubt be next.
Why would Vertigo be next when it’s still going strong AND a mature branch that Marvel lacks? Let’s face it, Wildstorm had some great titles but it was just…there.
