EXCLUSIVE: Whether it’s Marvin Gaye, Janis Joplin, Phil Spector or a host of others, enough announced music pics stall that it’s hard to find one worth worth getting excited about. Try this one: Sacha Baron Cohen has closed a deal to play Queen front man Freddie Mercury in a film that’s being scripted by Peter Morgan for a 2011 production start. The untitled film will be financed by GK Films partners Graham King and Tim Headington, who’ll produce in partnership with Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal’s Tribeca Productions, and Queen Films. Morgan is already working on a script focused on the band’s formative years, leading up to Queen’s appearance at Live Aid in 1985. Queen’s performance is considered one of the rock’s all-time great live concert appearances.
A rights package has been set that includes the band’s tunes, including Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You, We Are the Champions , Another One Bites The Dust and You’re My Best Friend. It is unclear whether Baron Cohen will sing—I’m told he can sing—or whether Mercury’s vocals will be used. Nobody sang like Mercury, so trying to replicate him would be a tall order. These decisions will be made as a director gets hired. Mercury died November 24, 1991 of complications from AIDS. Though his death helped to remove the stigma of AIDS sufferers prevalent at that time and particularly in the rock music industry, Mercury’s last days won’t be the subject of the film.
Baron Cohen is an intriguing choice. For one thing, he looks more like Mercury than any star I can think of. While Baron Cohen’s primarily a comic actor, he plays well-defined characters in films from Borat to Talladega Nights, Sweeney Todd and Bruno, and he’s currently starring in the 3D Martin Scorsese-directed drama Hugo Cabret, also for GK Films. In April, Baron Cohen was the catalyst for a big bucks comedy pitch being written by Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel. Paramount beat out others for a film, which calls for Baron Cohen to play dual roles of a goat herder and a deposed dictator who gets lost in the US. It was an extravagant deal and the project is on a fast track. It’s unclear how timing factors into the Mercury film.
Sacha Baron Cohen BANNED From Oscars 2012
Morgan has become a go-to guy for prestige films based on real figures, from Frost/Nixon to The Queen (no relation), The Last King of Scotland and Damned United. His most recent script, Hereafter, made its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last Sunday, with director Clint Eastwood and stars Matt Damon and Bryce Dallas Howard introducing the film at the Elgin Theater.
GK’s King confirmed the Queen deal: “Queen is one of the greatest rock bands of all time, and a music brand all unto itself,” he said in a statement. “Freddie Mercury was an awe-inspiring performer, so with Sacha in the starring role coupled with Peter’s screenplay and the support of Queen, we have the perfect combination to tell the real story behind their success.”
This is the first time the surviving members of Queen–Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon–have licensed songs and music publishing rights for a movie about the band and they formed Queen Films to be part of the production team on the film. They previously supplied their songs to We Will Rock You, the stage musical that has been running 9 years on London’s West End.
GK Films tomorrow opens the Ben Affleck-directed The Town through Warner Bros, and the Angelina Jolie-Johnny Depp thriller The Tourist opens December 10 through Columbia Pictures. Baron Cohen’s repped by WME and Morgan by UTA and UK-based Independent Talent Group.

Best. Casting. Ever.
“Ever”? Really?
Peter O’Toole as Lawrence of Arabia. Brando as Don Corleone. Bogart & Bergman in Casablanca. Heck, Heath Ledger as The Joker.
And casting a dramatically untested comic provcateur as Freddie Mecury is the best. casting. ever?
This is one of the best projects I’ve heard in many years, but I’d rather pay a ticket to watch a film version of “We will rock you” with Justin Timberlake as the lead.
WWRY the stage show is a hot mess – the feature will never be made. Tough to cast Galileo & Co. with top tier talent…it’s basically a vapid, campy sideshow that’s somehow managed a 9-yr run. Tourists have to see something in the West End right? It’s more or less music they recognize – the dialogue in English really just becomes filler. Excited for the Freddie story, and kudos for the lengthy WWRY stage run – but a big budget feature version of WWRY, I say PASS.
WWRY is a hot mess! It is campy! We were tourists who went and saw a show on the west end.
“seriously” is 100% correct.
But, I gotta say, I’d probably buy a ticket to both the new film with Sacha and also to a film version of WWRY with JT.
Mostly just to watch people try.
…And what about”Mamma Mia”=$600Mil Wordlwide!!
you are outta your mind? timberlake in the lead of anything is moronic. youll be eating your words when Cohen gets an oscar nod for his role.
dood anything with justin timberlake just sucks… at least baron can make me laugh haha
I hope Cohen takes this role seriously and does not make one of the most talented performers in the world look bad. I don’t think anyone has the vocal ability that Freddy Mercury had.
Yes!!! Agreed.
I agree. I hope that he makes Freddie proud
yes very much agree. I would hate one of my favorite singer’s life be told like a joke.
I couldn’t agree more or put it better myself. Freddie is one histories greatest musical talents and legend in his own right. I sincerely hope this film does justice of the legacy that was left by Freddie.
YUKKKKKKKKKKK! Why the hell would you have some teeny bopper play the greatest lead singers role I have ever heard. He has NO WHERE near the talent Feddie had or the class. Besides Freddie’s teeth he was Gorgeous!Timberlake is just a below average geek!Who gets girls cause he has a stacked wallet. I wouldn’t give Timberlake the time of day! He would have to pay me!!We don’t need anymore teeny bopper ideas!
If Brian May & Roger Taylor have anything to do with this movie it will be a good movie.
I heard quite a while ago that Mr. Sacha Baron Cohen was going to play the role; I was actually excited at that venture. Although his role in “Sweeney Todd” was slightly comedic, as Mr. Perelli (Petrelli?), it did show he actually knows how to sing, plus it shows that he can sing as a character, rather than with his usual voice.
He certainly looks the part, but is about 4″ or so taller than Mr. Freddie Mercury was.
But the part of the above article I was excited about was the little blip that mentioned some involvement by Mr. John Deacon. I know he is not interested in “[playing] with [his] band, across the wire, across the land”, but it is good to see his name mentioned in a recent-ish post along-side Dr. Brian May and Mr. Roger Taylor.
I’ve been following Queen as my favorite band since I was 12; 19 years ago and I am now facing my “Queen – Regis College – Denver, Colorado – April 16, 1974 – Special Guest – Mott The Hoople – First U.S. Tour/First Performance – Tickets $7.50 At Campus Bookstore (189)” poster. Sheesh, the poster itself cost me $4.00 and I’m sure it is a reprint anyway. (But I do have Brian May’s co-authored book “Bang” – and that one is not a reprint.)
But yeah, excited for sure.
It’s called hyperbole…
you’re taking things so literally. get off your high horse junior.
Oh come on, relax dude.
I don’t know if you have seen him in anything else, but he is VERY talented. I am not saying best casting ever, but there might be something great hidden in there, also most comic actors blow you away with serious roles… Robin Williams for instance…
yeah i agree. but in the end, no matter how good Sacha truly is, this is going to be the acting challenge of his life. those are really big shoes to fill and honestly, i’m hoping for voice-over work for the music. i don’t think there’s anyone that they’re gonna find that’s going to hit that vocal range AND play the part at the same time. nonetheless, this movie is HUGE on my gotta see list. it’s definitely going to be one of those buy without watching dvds.
indeed
” Heath Ledger as The Joker.”…
Pffft! The most overrated performance ever! He did a great job, yes, but PLEASE don’t turn him into a God-Actor who played one the “greatest characters ever in life”, C’moooon! Just because he died just before releasing the move and now he’s the martyr-idol-actor of all times (an “accidental” suicide, btw). He was a good actor, great performance, but keep it real.
I’m not a fan of Sacha Baron Cohen, but hey… he’s resemblance to Freddie Mercury is frikin’ impressive! Besides, he’s way extoverted to play Mercury’s character… Ohhh yes, wheter we like it or not, he’s the best, and probably not the best, but the only choice on playing Mercury.
CHAUUU EVERYONE!! HAVE A NICE DAY WOOOOOOO!
Untested dramatically nope , try Sasha in Sweeney todd, funny enough Johnny Depp also tried t0 get the Freddie part
Untested? Haven’t seen Sweeney Todd eh? Sacha is not all crazy. Perfect guy to play Freddie!
This makes me soooooo happy. What a brilliant combination of material and talent. I have no doubt Freddie, wherever he is, is smiling!
Sacha Baron Cohen is building one of the most interesting careers in Hollywood… Has an air of mystery about him in this day and age when we know everything about everyone. I love that you’ll never see him in some cheesy sequel or weak sauce comedy. He is a legitimately brilliant actor and I’m sure he will knock this one out of the park!!!!
I agree! Sacha is choosing his roles carefully and flying benieth the radar! I too have a feeling he is going to be amazing in this role. I hope so, because I would love to see Freddy again, even if it’s a glimps of him being brought to life by someone else.
Finally Jane puts the band & Sacha together with Peter Morgan & a financier. It took long enough. Have been tracking this forever. The Michael Cunningham script was beautiful, but no mention of it, Fleming?? Interesting choice of GK over Relativity who’s bank rolling Fockers w. Uni – especially after GK was supposed to finance The Good Shepherd and fell off. I know it happened, but not sure why?
The Michael Cunningham script was godawful, historically inaccurate to a fault, unrepresentative of freddie mercury, and completely biased towards one piece of source material. Glad it got tossed, doubt the rest of the band would have signed off on it anyway.
YES. BEST> CASTING EVER> for a Hollywood film.
looking forward to this… i cant wait…finally
Oh YA! I can see that!
Sounds brilliant! I can’t wait for this film to come out.
THE BEST APPLAUSE!!!!!!!! I CAN’T WAOT TO SEE FREDI AGAIN
Well, if this is the target audience, I’m sure the producers could get away with casting Gilbert Gottfried, just the same…
Other than using Mercury’s original vocals, they should consider using Mika since his voice is almost a dead ringer.
Oh please, not Mika – he can sing nothing like Freddie. I think they should just use studio takes from Freddie since no one can sing like Freddie could sing. Sacha is the best choice and let’s not forget. Freddie had an amazing sense of humour.
If you think Mika is a dead ringer for Freddie Mercury then you really ought to get your ears cleaned out. Please – don’t insult Mister Mercury.
I think it would be so great if sacha -baron cohen play freddie mercury
…don’t get me wrong, this guy (Baron Cohen) is as into his roles as it gets out there in the show business, but really? Playing Freddie Mercury I think is just too much for him due to complexity of the character…drama, charisma, talent, greatness, presence, etc. There are actors aout there who could take on this role magnificently….just a suggestion out of some other great actors, how about Robert Downey Jr.
I followed Queen from their early years….and hope that whomever plays that role don’t make Freddie Mercury look like just another rockstar ’cause in all truth he was so much more than that.!
God save the Queen
Has anyone heard of Mika?? He sounds a LOT like Freddie Mercury, and could even pull off the looks I am sure. Check it out. He would be better than Baron Cohen.
Can this movie come out any faster I cannot wait, seriously I need to see this movie!!!! HURRY, PLEASE!!!!!
When is this film, supposed to be released?
OMG. This made me smile for the first time today. Perfect casting! I’m there!
Cohen did a bang-up job in “Sweeney Todd” on that one song. But no matter how good he is, how good the script, the fact that they got the rights to the songs (which is why this hasn’t happened a million times before), and so and so on, it’s going to be hard to watch someone else “do” Freddie Mercury as that’s somebody whose visual panache is as remembered as his music. Mercury was singular, just a one-of-a-kind talent. Obviously, a filmic hagiography was inevitable, but it won’t be better than simply watching “Live at Wembley.”
This from a huge fan of the “We Will Rock You” musical, btw.
Cohen’s gonna knock it out of the park, one can only hope the filmmakers can keep up
AMEN
He sang in Burton’s ” Sweeney Todd ” and he was a strong singer.
IT WAS JOHNNY DEPP IN SWEENEY TODD. EVERYONE KEEPS SAYING IT WAS COHEN. FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!
Cohen played Pirelli, the first person that Sweeney killed in the film.
RADIO GAGA!!
Genius casting choice.
I am there.
Yes, great casting. But I’m disturbed that they’re not including his death from AIDS in the story. That was such a dramatic and tragic end to a brilliant life, and such an eye-opening moment to the world on the scope of the AIDS crisis, how can you not include it?
Simple reason. If the film is a box-office success, they can then quickly greenlight the sequal looking at the remaining years of Freddie’s life
That, or its typical hollywood “pretend controversial events never happened” bullshit.
Right, Hollywood NEVER mines controversy…
While I agree that a biopic about Freddie Mercury ought to include the story about his death, especially considering how eye opening it was to the world, to make the movie about the formation and rise of Queen, and have it culminate in what is undoubtedly Queen’s greatest performance of all time (Live AID) would create a very epic feel to it. Ending the movie with a remake of that performance would simply and perfectly exemplify the rise of Queen. That being said, I could imagine some distortion or exaggeration of history taking place here in this movie to over dramatize it.
The topic of Freddie Mercury’s death, if it is not covered in a sequel, will probably be briefly mentioned at the very end. Text describing how his “controversial death at the hands of AIDS shattered the world, opening its eyes to the etc.” would be accompanied by a freeze frame of the last shot of the movie. Something like that.
As for the casting of Sacha Baron Cohen, I must say that were I directing a movie of this variety, I would never guess to cast him. Sacha Baron Cohen does look rather similar to Freddie Mercury, and also shares his stage…gusto… if you will. His singing in Sweeney Todd reached a very impressive falsetto range. Of course, his singing in that movie was geared towards a more comedic effect, but still it showed that he could hit some notes. I think Sacha would be very capable of expertly singing the songs of Queen, but maybe not as a direct copy of Freddie’s singing. Rather, it would be as an homage.
Maybe they’ll employ the flashback framing device ala VELVET GOLDMINE to look back from vantage point of Freddie in his final days?
This was a role Adam Lambert was born to play. And he can belt it.
Why isn’t Adam Lambert playing this role???He would be the most logical choice for me.Yes, Adam was born to play and sing Freddie. Not Cohen.
Can he act, will he draw?
What’s the Highlander guy got to do with this?
yes Adam Lambert would have been a great choice for this role simply because he could actually do the singing not to mention his flamboyant approach to each of his performances would truly make for riveting concert scenes but not sure he could pull off the acting parts, not to mention he’s just too pretty. As much as I loved & still love Freddy he wasn’t the most attractive man so Sacha will truly fit the bill, I think it’s a great choice!
He was gorgeous!!! What are you talking about?
Freddie Mercury, not attractive? He was and is still considered to be, hands down, the MOST ATTRACTIVE man that ever graced this planet. He had Classic Good Looks, PERFECT FEATURES….I’ve yet to see any man come close.
Adam lambert has a great voice, but he doesnt have the look, and we dont even know if he can act, so thats why I would say no to adam lambert.
Adam Lambert is a good singer, but he doesn’t exactly look like Freddie.
No one, and I repeat, no one can belt it like Freddie Mercury.
If Cohen can lip sync and act his way so that audiences accept him as Freddie…that would be a huge success.
We shall see.
But, I repeat…no one can sing like Freddie with all due respect to Adam Lambert. It cannot be done!!!!
MUST USE FREEDIE’S SOUNDTRACKS!!!
Who is Adam Lambert?
dude it’s called the internet
Now that’s just plain rude. It’s perfectly logical for someone to ask a question as part of a conversation and it wouldn’t have killed you to say that he’s from American Idol.
It’s sad that personal communication is a dying art and people like you would rather bury your nose in a computer and look things up rather than just have a conversation with someone!
Clearly thew person asking thought he was being clever.
“dude it’s called the internet”. Some of us have lives jerkoff. We don’t watch every kiddyporn show on tv. Do yourself a favor and go jerk it in the kitchen sink with a fresh tomatoe.
Adam Lambert is indeed a very awesome singer, but I don’t think he has the age or the experience needed to pull off such a massive role. Cohen is an excellent choice.
wow had no idea who lambert was, googled him clicked the first video link……i must say he would be a great Farook Bulsara
Wow, very exciting idea. The screenwriter has a tough job on his hands if it’s just a bio-pic, and I don’t think his previous work has been very stellar. But Mercury was a very funny, campy person offstage so Cohen is a good choice. I wonder if they’ll fit him for fake teeth.
Of course they will. They have to. They must. That is Freddie.
Whoever got the idea is the best casting choice in years. Quoting Borat: it’s niiiiiiiice!!!!
I’ll put this to shame right now kids.
THE LIFE OF ELTON JOHN STARRING PHILLIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN.
You win. That truly is the best. casting. ever.
What about Madonna playing Lady Gaga (the senior years)…
Like that idea. Hoffman is great!
Love it! I’d be in line for it, too.
Huge Queen fan, huge Sasha fan, what a brilliant casting. Get ready for Sasha’s award season. He’s going to nail this like nobody’s business.
Interesting casting. I hope he takes it seriously. Mercury was an amazing artist and great performer. I think I’ve only seen Cohen in comedy roles, but seems talented enough to pull it off and does have a similar look.
Meh. They should just make We Will Rock You into a movie.
Hello there Heh from me here in New Zewland just your comment about the We Will Rock Show They should make a Dvd of that show i didnt gave go the showwhen it was in auckland to fair away for me also i didnt given get a program but how about the person who won the stairs in there eyes for this movie that are going to make about that siger freddie mercury best song he sing is Radio Ga Ga from the live aid concert i have try to get a concert form the concert but no go hope to hear from you if you have time to say Hello injoy ur day….
Cliff Here In Blenheim
New Zealand
He’s funny but I doubt he has the gravitas to act. I have no desire to see this. And I’m a Queen fanatic.
You doubt he has the gravitas to act? Last time I checked, acting includes comedic acting.
And dude has so much gravitas in real life you’d be surprised. He’s exactly the kind of commanding persona it will take to get a filmed version of Freddy Mercury right.
Perhaps he’ll remember to mention your name from the podium.
Sounds great! With the surviving members of Queen supporting this film, it is a safe bet that it will be a quality piece – I’m guessing they won’t let it be anything less. As others have said, great casting choice (in Cohen) for Freddie. He’s got a hell of an acting job on his hands though. Freddie was one of the quirkiest and most charismatic people to ever walk the planet. It won’t be easy to capture his essence.
This band’s story is a riveting one that deserves to be told on the big screen. I can’t quite understand why they wouldn’t include Mercury’s illness and death, which affected the band so much both personally and professionally, and which was certainly the worst thing these four colleagues and good friends had to endure during their 21 year relationship. Still looking forward to the film though. And big question – fake teeth or no fake teeth?
Good get, Mike.
I think Tom Hardy (Inception) would have been a better choice. The problem with Cohen is that everyone is going to associate him with Borat instantly because of the FM moustache.
I think Johnny Debb is the answer to playing Freddie. He can play anyone
Quite simply AWESOME.
Bravo!
Most. Literal. Comment. Ever.
Is Peter Morgan doing a rewrite of SOMEBODY TO LOVE by Michael Cunningham that made the Black-List in 2007???
glad the film makers have the okay to use queens songs in the film for really can not do a film about freedy mercury if one can not include queen stuff. and always thought Sasha would be perfect as Freddy. wonder what Sasha will sound like if he sings in the film.
Don’t mean to be Debbie Downer…I just think Mercury’s story shouldn’t be filmed. The music and the real life story should be speak for themselves.
Ditto Syd Barrett, Hendrix, and Layne Staley.
But then again—they’ve made films about Elvis, Morrison, and now Janis. So I guess it’s inevitable.
I’m just worried that given Cohen’s propensity for shape-shifting within the comedy genre, fitting him with a brace to match Mercury’s massive overbite (not to mention the capes, ball-hugging one-piece jumpsuits, and eyeliner) is going to look comical and tongue-in-cheek.
Do the producers remember that the stripped-down Mercury (jeans/wife-beater/biker mustache, as seen in the pic above) didn’t emerge until much later in his career?
Ever see Ray?
Um, I’d have gone with Russell Brand. Personally I think HE looks & would sound more like Freddie Mercury.
JMHO
P.I.
Agree 100%!!! It is really funny: I’m on this site because I love Freddie, and as I was rewatching some Queen videos I couldn’t help thinking that it would be great to make a movie with Russel Brand. I googled Russel Brand Freddie Mercury… and here I see that Cohen is going to do it! I don;t have a problem with him but NOOOOO!If it’s because of Bruno, well Brand did “Get him to the Greek” and is an actual music performer!
It has to be him! I hope they will change their mind…
I am so excited about this! Sacha is THE PERFECT choice – Adam Lambert is not – he’s too “pretty”. The more an actor looks like the character they’re playing, the better. As for the singing – Sacha will HAVE to lip-sync, then he can concentrate more on Freddie’s physical charactics and his colorful private-behind the stage life. Ending the story with Queen’s Live Aid performance is smart. I don’t want to remember how he died, but OH HOW HE LIVED!
I for one think if they can make films of the original stars of dope smoking fame then why not a gay singer!
